New things that got instantly ruined

I have just spent £315 having some pictures framed (I know, it’s crazy expensive). I wanted to put the smallest (A4ish size) one up near a light switch so bought command strips which I have used successfully before on similar sized pictures which have been up for several years so didn’t think it would be an issue. Used extra as I always do, 5 minutes later it fell down onto my tiled floor and now the frame is scuffed. Apparently the paint in our kitchen isn’t very good for sticking stuff on.

Make me feel better and tell me about your new stuff that has got ruined? I feel like everyone else gets to have nice stuff and mine always has a problem or gets spoilt 😩

Bought a brand new bed, not cheap with a beautiful deep mattress.
Our cat - that NEVER ever goes upstairs went up , went under the duvet and peed on the mattress.
I bought special stuff that sorted it, let it dry completely, and it’s fine. But there is a big water mark right in the middle if that looks as if someone ( human ) has wet the bed.

Brand new carpet been down 5 days and I knocked the hot iron over and burnt a big iron shaped hole in it

Similar - Brand new light coloured carpet, and just 12 days later my dog was sick.
I also damaged my hardwood floor by using the wrong product.

Years ago mum admired my aunts new coffee table; a picture style with a glass top. Mum saved up and bought similar coffee table from Woolworth's a circular one with ducks on a pond covered with glass. first time it was assembled Dad brought the coffee mugs in put them down a tad too hard and shattered the glass! to try to make up for it dad tried to cover the table with tiles instead as the duck picture had been ruined by the glass but was never the same obviously

First year of marriage I started to buy one piece a month of a very expensive dinner set. (£5 per saucer in 1979)
Second year I was able to purchase the teapot.
Got it home and placed it on the window ledge while sorting out the cupboard.
DH decided to open the window and knocked it off.
Third year mum bought it for me as a Christmas present.
Opened it on Christmas morning and placed it on a low table.
1 hour later DH broke it again.
Then children came along and other things needed to be bought.

We are into the 30th year it had been discontinued.
Found one on eBay second hand.
Arrived and you guessed it DH dropped it.

We have been married for 45 years and I have found another on eBay big question do I get it or not.
The rest of the dinner set which we use everyday is still in good condition.
Only thing missing is the teapot.
Maybe I don't need a teapot but it will go in the wall unit by the coffee pot, milk jug and sugar bowl.

Buy it, but when it arrives absolutely ban your DH from going anywhere near it. Put it straight in your wall unit as soon as it arrives. 4th time lucky!

@Whatmonth no, don't buy it. You are destined not to own it, at least not in one piece (two if you count the lid). You should print off a picture of it, frame it, and stand that next to the rest of the ensemble. Go for a perspex frame as opposed to glass, based on what's happened already. HTH.

On another note, I am so sorry to read of your losess, however, I am much more sorry for how much I laughed at your story. It really amused me more than it ought to have done. Please forgive me.

Purchased a Noguchi coffee table. Boyfriend decided to peel potatoes into a heavy steel pot on the table. Somehow managed to drop it and chip a 19mm glass coffee table. £2000 gone.

I purchased one of them too. Pre DCs. It had to go … I walked into the lounge to find one of them all but laminated into the carpet 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

I cried silent tears whist her mother urged us all to admire her writing.

Why on earth wouldn’t you say ‘Well that’s lovely Debbie, but now mummy has to pay for it to be replaced’, or something?

That's what I'm wondering. A lot of these tales are winding me up a lot. I want to hear that the perpetrators got, if not a savage beating, at least divorce papers, their marching orders, put to sleep, or failing all else, a massive bill!

@Thedayb4youcame

a friend who replaced her broken pine bed in the spare bedroom with an almost identical new one...so similar was it, when taken apart her husband sawed up the new bed by mistake and took it too the tip.

This actually made me laugh out loud.

I hope you dumped the idiot.

@SeeSeeRider I laugh now.

When it happened -(about 22 years ago based on my memory of where my friend was living & that I had moved to her street too), I was flat broke and my friend wasn't exactly flush either, and I remember the look on her face when I asked about the new bed and she said "Oh don't ask...XXX only went and sawed it up, thinking it was the old one. He had to take them both to the tip". I actually winced at the thought of eighty-odd quid wasted in one fell swoop.

My first ever grown-up flat, moving out from parents and sharing with various mates - standing on my own two feet, took me YEARS to save and afford my own furniture. Paying off all the big items monthly, as we had to do, but splurged on my perfect big, comfy CREAM coloured sofa, because it just looked so lovely and perfect; what I had always dreamed of!!!

So, I'm at work when the delivery is due to arrive - so ask Mum & Dad to wait in for it..... it arrives, and my Mum feels so sorry for the delivery drivers having to get it up one flight of stairs, she offered them all a coffee... trips with the tray in her hands and literally throws 5 mugs with milk in the bottom/ a full carafe of coffee/ bowl of sugar/ biscuits etc, ALL OVER my dreamy settee... by the time I arrived home, it was already totally ruined, and I remember the company offered me a voucher for just £5 off my next purchase, when I explained what had happened...couldn't afford a new one for YEARS, so it ended up covered in throws, looking much more knackered than the old hand-me-down it had replaced... I cried for AGES over that!!!

Of course your mum paid for the replacement?

OnTheBoardwalk · 15/07/2024 23:43

I remember aged 17ish and being lazy put a towel on the floor to do ironing and burnt my mums brand new carpet, I know it meant a lot to her. I bought a cheap rug to cover, all was ok

my boyfriend at the time put an incense cone (totally ages me) on his bedroom furniture without a base which made a mark, she beat him round the head with her wooden slipper!

be careful out there!

Had a beautiful designer dress I managed to get on sale for a wedding.

I put it in the wash basket (I am the only person who does laundry - would never let DH near it).

I went away for a week for work and came home to find my husband had done all the laundry “to help me out and be nice” only to find he had TUMBLED DRIED the designer dress and consequently made it about 3 sizes smaller 😭😭😭😭😭

Our carpet fitter was still laying the carpet when the dog ran in and scooched his butt across the middle. Left a delightful brown stripe!!

Just snorted my tea reading that @MillieMinx .

DCat has some sort of digestive issue which involves at least 1 x weekly poos splodges on the stairs. Old carpet, light colour so we can at least be aware of these when its light.

Really want a new carpet but....

Whatmonth · 20/07/2024 11:16

Good news my teapot has arrived in tact.
DH hasn't been near it.
I have placed it in the wall unit and told DH that is the only place he is NOT allowed to dust.😂

Coastalcreeksider · 20/07/2024 11:38

Brand new car, not had more than couple of weeks. Took cat to vet and he liked to just lay on back seat as he hated the cat carrier and I could never get him in it.

Drove home afterwards, only 5 minutes down the road and noticed an awful smell and thought stress had made the cat fart.

No, he'd covered half the back seat in loose soft poo and it was gorgeous blue/grey fabric seats.

Cleaned it off best I could and my brother who was in the car trade, called in a favour and got someone to steam clean the back seat straight away. Thank goodness for favours.

DH got me a 100 ml bottle of Dior Addict edp. Dropped it on the bathroom floor 😭

Ahhh you have just reminded me of the time approx 10 years ago, the first time I'd ever spent over £100 on a bottle of perfume, thought I'd treat myself to a new bottle to take on holiday. The day after we got there, I hadn't unpacked properly, and lazily dragged an item of clothing out of my case, the bottle came with it and smashed on the tiled floor, OMG I was gutted, learnt a lesson there!
