My money's on David Lammy by February.

That’s terrifically interesting. But what relevance does it have?

But Jeremy Corbyn.

absquatulize · 10/07/2024 14:19

IClaudine · 10/07/2024 14:07

I feel sure the current Labour government would not survive such an election, given its failure to hate trans women enough.

I am thinking of starting a petition calling for a General Election so that this can be put to the test. Will you join me?

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 10/07/2024 14:19

Lammy will have to go if Trump is re-elected.

Except that it's been pointed out multiple times in this thread that he didn't say that at all.

Thanks for pointing that out. Multiple times 😂

And yes, clearly he was just a bit confused!

Where was he confused though?

I think some on MN find it disconcerting that someone can do so well without the trappings they consider essential to success, especially formal education.

I'm a big fan of education, I'm a university lecturer and I think education opens so many doors but I don't think it's the only way to success, just the easiest one.

Here's a woman who had a baby as a teenager, left school without any qualifications, speaks with the "wrong" regional accent (all accents are regional but some people seem to forget that!) and she's risen to Deputy Prime Minister. Some seem unhappy that she hadn't done that the conventional way, and doesn't try to hide where she came from.

She didn’t go to a red brick though. Or have extra curricular sports. Or violin lessons.

Which is exactly why she is fantastic.

At the risk of repeating myself, he did though once say.

"chicken"

And I am disgusted.

Notaflippinclue · 10/07/2024 14:21

I think the video of Lammy on LBC will get quite a bit of airing - hopefully not around the world

I have no idea what "chicken" refers to I'm afraid, but please do feel free to inform me.

Lammy will have to go if Trump is re-elected.

Why? Why should we change our political leaders because they do? We don’t belong to them. Trump wouldn’t do anything for Britain whoever was in the foreign office anyway. He’s an isolationist. Starmer knows the election is coming and that’s a possible outcome. If he didn’t think Lammy could work with Trump as well as anyone else he wouldn’t have appointed him in the first place

It is a quote from our Foreign Secretary.

If you want the context you could look it up.

KTheGrey · 10/07/2024 14:25

David Lammy speaks / writes publicly on subjects he knows nothing about - ie accusing the BBC of "racist innuendo" when discussing the colour of the Vatican smoke when a new pope is elected and people "growing a cervix". This does make him look silly.

user1984778379202 · 10/07/2024 14:29

Anyone wanting Labour to fail right now really should give their heads a wobble in the face of announcements like the one they've just made. Remember the Education expert that the Tories brought in to determine how much it would cost to help our kids catch up after the pandemic? He recommended spending £15bn on various programmes, the Tories went "nah, let's spend billions on divisive policies like Rwanda instead and give the kids just 10% of what's needed", and he resigned in protest. Well, Starmer has just appointed him to the Department for Education to help schools. Nice one.

Maybe it’s just the people you know and the weirdness of MN.

No one cares in reality. They care about other female things. Like equality, and equal pay, and safety to walk the streets and decent medical care.

How do you advocate for equality for women when men can be women?

How do you achieve equal pay when a highly-paid man can identify as a woman and hey presto, sex pay gap closed?

How do you tackle VAWG when men can be women, including committing offences against women while claiming womanhood themselves?

How do you set healthcare policies to tackle health inequalities faced by women when men can be women?

These are not meant as as gotchas, they are serious questions. How do you do anything specifically for women, when "woman" now means "any human"?

StMarieforme · 10/07/2024 14:31

@CelesteCunningham I think there must be other criteria at work here.

absquatulize · 10/07/2024 14:32

FinalCeleryScheme · 10/07/2024 14:29

I quite agree it never has, but we are where we are.

BIossomtoes · 10/07/2024 14:34

How do you achieve equal pay when a highly-paid man can identify as a woman and hey presto, sex pay gap closed? Equal pay is a macro issue established over wide groups of people. A single person would have no effect.

How do you tackle VAWG when men can be women, including committing offences against women while claiming womanhood themselves? You tackle it by punishing perpetrators, regardless of sex.

How do you set healthcare policies to tackle health inequalities faced by women when men can be women? By tackling health inequalities for the entire population. The greatest health inequalities are due to poverty, not sex or gender.

Unless Corbyn makes a spectacular come-back and takes a seat at the cabinet table, I think we can safely say that consideration of his ministerial job prospects needn’t bother us. Did you mean to post on a different thread?

AzureAnt · 10/07/2024 14:38

Melisha · 10/07/2024 13:18

Lammy is black and did not go to private school. Of course some on here assume he is thick.

Nobody said he was thick because he's black. It's because he makes misogynistic statements

DGPP · 10/07/2024 14:39

Agree that Rayner is fantastic, clever and exactly what we need

AzureAnt · 10/07/2024 14:38

You don’t have to say it for it to be at the root of your feelings though. And they were mistaken comments but not misogynistic. He doesn’t hate women, in the same way that you maintain you don’t hate trans women.

AnonymousBleep · 10/07/2024 14:41

Pathetic thread, especially given the absolute state of the last government.

Please tell me there isn't more than one thread.

The mind boggles.
