Thread 14 - TalkLair: “What The Hell Are We Supposed To Use, Man? Harsh Language?”

(Previous thread 13).

Summer should be well under way, but the chilly wind, grey clouds and pouring rain beg to differ. Looks like 2024 continues to be a washout - on the bright side, the Tories got washed out too! In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

I have to say, my first thought is, I don't think there's anything else you can do. I've been in similar situations with friends and family members (as have many, no doubt), and ATEOTD, there seems little sense in damaging friendships over it.

Britinme · 26/07/2024 01:08

Apparently she understands where the transwomen she knows are coming from and thinks they’re harmless gentle soils.

she refuses to read anything about this, preferring to trust her instincts.

this is my closest friend but we just can’t talk about the issue and she shuts me down if I attempt to explain my beliefs. We spend many happy hours together as long as we don’t talk about this issue, so we don’t talk about it.

Britinme · 26/07/2024 01:09

I think you’re right duc. It was the comparison with racism that shook me.

that's very sad.* *Do you know what the hog died of?

No, he just died.

SinnerBoy · 26/07/2024 06:54

Britinme

I don't really know what to say, except that the older people get, the more entrenched they get in their positions, in my experience. My gran , several aunts, an older cousin, my dad - they all get / got angry, if challenged over something, even trivial.

Kucinghitam · 26/07/2024 07:10

@Britinme that sounds so difficult. I think it is probably best to just avoid the topic entirely, given that the rest of the friendship is good.

Just to throw in my 2p, specifically with regard to therapy and other such intimate personal situations (particularly in the case of a raped woman), the point of the therapy is to assist the client/patient. So, as far as practicable, the client/patient should be able to say "not that therapist" even if it's because of race. A person's mind/body shouldn't be subject to EDI regulation. Obviously this may mean a severe delay in service/treatment, which should be made clear to the client, but people should be able to refuse intimate situations for any reason (however bizarre or bigoted).

It's like if somebody only ate deep-fried fatballs for every meal, I'm not entitled to force-feed them broccoli, however much I know their diet is harming them and that some vegetables would do them the world of good.

Thanks Kuc - that's a really good point.

Britinme · 26/07/2024 13:17

And in further mememe news I have Covid. Woke up yesterday with a headache and a scratchy throat, remembered that was how I'd felt last time I had Covid so I tested and yep, positive. I'm feeling not great but not deathly ill. DH has no symptoms so he slept in the spare room last night, but will need to test anyway today as he had no symptoms last time he was positive for Covid.

kittykarate · 26/07/2024 13:31

I'm also Covid plagued - felt a bit off for a couple of days. I thought it was a combo of hayfever and menopause but I was really dizzy this morning so I took a test. Mr Kitty is ok so far, he'd slept in the spare room the last couple of nights while I was snoring too much, so hopefully dodged a lot of my plague.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 26/07/2024 14:52

Oh no - much sympathy to the beCovided.

artant · 26/07/2024 15:41

Hope those with Covid recover speedily!

SinnerBoy · 26/07/2024 15:46

Oh no, so much plague around, I hope you're all OK and better soonest.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 26/07/2024 15:50

Best wishes to all those with covid, hope you all feel better soon!

weaseleyes · 26/07/2024 18:47

Get well soon, everyone

No, he just died.

That's really sad, poor little hog.

SinnerBoy · 27/07/2024 04:57

We've just had a load of dolphins, hunting tuna, off Sagres. When I went below, I could hear them squeaking, through the hull.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 27/07/2024 10:09

How lovely!

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 27/07/2024 10:52

This is adorable, what a lovely mum.

Dolphins! That sounds lovely.

And the upside down chair rollercoaster is just plain brilliant.

DeanElderberry · 27/07/2024 14:04

I also liked the momma cat further down the rollercoaster chair thread, rescuing her baby from a huge fish, then carrying it away for admonishment.

It was inspired! The little girl will remember that one forever.

I liked the cat mum and kitten too.

Kucinghitam · 27/07/2024 14:35

I want someone to upside-down chair rollercoaster me!

I hadn’t scrolled down so had missed the cat mum and her kitten. That’s lovely!

Britinme · 28/07/2024 01:55

I love the way she firmly drags it well away from the pool.

I am upstairs isolating with Covid and DH is downstairs so I have sole say over the TV tonight, so I'm watching the new Ghostbusters movie, which is about the right level of mental exertion I feel like.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 28/07/2024 09:46

Here's Barney sitting on the tabletop portrait my brother did of him.
