Loads when I was younger - we had a comedy club at the local pub in N London where I lived at the time, and also used to go to the comedy cafe / jongleurs. The most memorable was probably Matt Lucas as Sit Bernard Chumley.
Also, Victoria Wood when I was a teenager, Al Murray as the pub landlord, Russell Kane.

1984Winston · 09/07/2024 07:34

Greg Davies and Milton Jones, going to see Greg again next year

@OlympicDimples
Why was Reginald D Hunter awful?

I didn't find him at all funny live either. He's great on game shows though.

LunaNorth · 09/07/2024 07:52

Oh god, I’ve just remembered that I saw Michael Barrymore in Great Yarmouth as a kid. I think I enjoyed it, but looking back his act was a bit odd.

I'd also forgotten I'd seen Russell Brand. He was excellent. So funny.

SiobhanSharpe · 09/07/2024 11:46

Not seen this Irish trio mentioned but they are brilliant. A live comedy act, more than traditional stand-up -
Foil, Arms and Hogg, twice.
Dame Edna (dangerous!)
Dylan Moran (rambling, boring, got heckled and did not like it.)
Miles Jupp (absolutely filthy 😅)

DaffodilDora · 09/07/2024 12:05

Yeah, Foil, Arms and Hog are great 😁

allaboardtheplaybus · 08/07/2024 20:47

I saw one of Ian Cognito's last gigs - he was brilliant and yet there were only about 15 people there! It was more of a small gathering in a bar with him smelling strongly of marijuana and regaling us with stories. Great night 🥰

Yes @allaboardtheplaybus he was amazing but his own worst enemy. Could have been huge but kept pissing people off! Grin There's a documentary about him on Prime or Free on Freevee if you don't mind the ads.

Watch Ian Cognito: A Life and A Death On Stage | Prime Video

A documentary about one of the most popular, controversial and troubled comedians in the UK. We learn about the scene in the 1980s, the rise of alternative comedy and some of the unique acts that existed. There is a cavalcade of stories, jokes, songs a...

Russell brand on his own - also hilarious at the time (early noughties) but myself and friend were slightly perturbed at the end by the being held in the entrance whilst he pointed out who was to be asked to go to his "after-party" then all being encouraged to chase him down a pier!

When I saw him he asked for any groupies/future one-night stands to make themselves known in the foyer after the gig. He wasn't joking either.

FailBetter · 09/07/2024 14:53

Reginald D Hunter (very dark, not as funny as when he's on Have I Got News for You, quite angry)

Yes, that was my experience. I refer to it as a "resentful gig" as he seemed to really hate the audience. He berated the guy I was with for smiling but not laughing. (His material was amusing in parts but not laugh out loud funny. We weren't heckling. We were just waiting for a good bit!)
He seemed to be looking for conflict but we were just Confused
He said in the Guardian:
I would say to my younger self: once you’ve tried proving yourself by getting everyone’s approval that you’re worth it, you’ll realise that such an exercise isn’t worth it.
Maybe he was angry that we weren't wetting ourselves <shrug>
