Read teenage magazines like Just Seventeen, Mizz and Sugar. I used to look longingly at them in the newsagents and try and read them at friends’ houses 😂 When I came back, I’d often be quizzed as to whether I’d watched or read anything ‘unsuitable’.

Is anyone allowed to do this?

My DH was allowed apparently and I'm the weird one apparently for not letting out own kids do it in our house now

MonsteraMama · 07/07/2024 00:26

Drink fizzy drinks, or eat things like Findus crispy pancakes (which I coveted for some reason), potato smileys, Turkey twizzlers, jarred hot dogs, frozen pizza and such. We never had sweets in the house and I was allowed one chocolate bar a week. Fast food was a once a month treat if that, and the only drink I was allowed other than milk or water was my once a week cherry slush puppy after swimming. My mam was anti UPF before it was a thing I guess!

I didn't have a fizzy drink until high school, I still don't drink them often, so I thank her for that habit at least!

I bloody loved all those magazines. Luckily, I was allowed to buy them!

TheChosenTwo · 07/07/2024 00:31

To use the phone before 6 o’clock!
To have a Mr Frosty (still bitter but I bought my kids one and it was indeed a heap of shit 😂)
To have my belly button pierced at 15. Was livid at the time. I didn’t bother getting one as an adult.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/07/2024 00:31

I really wanted to a lolo ball. Wasn't allowed one.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/07/2024 00:34

Also wasn't allowed to have chewing gum. I still can't bring myself to buy a screwball at the age of 42.

BobbyBiscuits · 07/07/2024 00:34

Have a computer ever
Or a colour telly/VHS till I was about 8 (I'm not going to mention Sky in case people think I'm Sunak)
Own a bicycle ( not that I wanted one!)
Put my elbows on the dining table
Drop my Hs
Say 'fanny' or 'willy' it had to be penis and vagina (not vulva, to this day my mum dk what a vulva is!?)
Ask for food at someone else's house/ refuse food if offered, even if I hated it!
Get my ears pierced til I was 10 (I was outraged, lol)

Oh, I would have been sooo envious of you 😂 Me too, especially the problem pages!

Strokethefurrywall · 07/07/2024 00:48

Watch Eastenders. Which, honestly, I'm grateful for.

Jeannie88 · 07/07/2024 00:59

Chewing gum!

dottydodah · 07/07/2024 00:59

Wasnt allowed bubble gum(too common apparently!) We lived in a london semi! Rock unless I cleaned my teeth,Honeycomb or too many sweets generally. Was cross then but relieved now ! Maybe they could see the shortage of future dentists!

RosesAndHellebores · 07/07/2024 01:05

Chew gum
Eat in the street
Be scruffy
Wear pink - it was for pretty girls

When I bought my first house I had a pink kitchen fitted.

JohnPrescottsPyjamas · 06/07/2024 23:57

Bring peacock feathers or heather into the house! My mother was irrationally superstitious.

No whistling - it wasn’t ‘ladylike’
Wash my hair during my period.
Eat in the street.

Curious to know what’s wrong with hair-washing during a period??

Nothing at all, but there’s loads of mad old myths around it… it’ll make your hair curly (oh horror!), your hair will fall out etc etc…

thaegumathteth · 06/07/2024 23:31

Oh yes I wasn't allowed to cry either - only times I can remember it being allowed was when someone / a pet died. Otherwise 'no bubbling'

The Scottish parenting guide ala 1970s by any chance.
Nae greeting
Didnae you dare.
Loads more but it was usually to the detriment of us kids.
Thank god things have changed.

Shityshitybangbang · 07/07/2024 00:02

DinnaeFashYersel · 06/07/2024 23:46

I was allowed to do all these things. 🤣

I was thinking the same haha

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 07/07/2024 01:57

Watch Grange Hill - dad waa a teacher

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 07/07/2024 02:08

I remember my mum fervently saying that I should never watch The Exorcist, ever. When I told her I'd watched it she was extremely disappointed and sad. I still don't get that now because she wasn't even religious.

itwasalittlelikethis · 07/07/2024 02:09

I was not aloud to join the Bros fan club. I was gutted!

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 07/07/2024 02:25

Oh god chewing gum. Yeah, I remember my dad pointing to the deposits on the street and saying it was a disgusting habit, even though he smoked and drank. I've never taken up chewing gum, but I do smoke and drink. Thanks dad 🤣.

MermaidMummy06 · 07/07/2024 02:45

I wasn't allowed to do a lot of interesting /adventurous stuff because I was a girl. I had to watch/hear all about DB doings it instead.

Anything that required either parent to go out of their way to drive me somewhere.

Watch the tv. DM was obsessed with it & would just take it over & switch channels, even if you were watching something for five minutes.

Oh yes, the problem pages, my favourite. I often think that's why I like mn so much. It's like a problems page, but you can get instant advice. Can you imagine having to write your problem, post it, and wait until it's published. They were probably made up in the magazines, though!
