Was not allowed the shiny shoes as a child
Was not allowed any other coloured bra than white as " not good women wear coloured ones"
Was not allowed hubba bubba gum
Was not allowed the fan on for more than 10 mins as they cost a fortune to run, same for the heating in winter, my sister used to warm her self up with a small hairdryer.

I wasn't allowed to watch ITV, BBC only! I'm not sure what the reason was.

Me either! Especially Eastenders or Grange HillHmm

Horsenohound · 07/07/2024 16:38

Have a dog
Have long hair

maddiemookins16mum · 07/07/2024 16:40

Stay overnight at friend’s houses. Call for our pals to come out and play at meal times.

watchingsmurfs · 07/07/2024 16:41

Have a trampoline

Mylobsterteapot · 07/07/2024 16:52

Have any kind of gun or war related toy or game. I’ve never been to laser quest, or used a water pistol. We had water fights, but with sponges, water balloons or squeezey bottles.

I actually think it’s a good thing. War is not to be trivialised.

Kovus · 07/07/2024 16:57

Wasn’t allowed to gallop my chariot north along Watling Street.

Djthhtk9494 · 07/07/2024 16:59

Watch Coronation Street, eat/ drink in the street or use the phone(except in an emergency). Fun times!

Djthhtk9494 · 07/07/2024 16:59

And yep only BBC allowed here too. Why???

wastingtimeonhere · 07/07/2024 17:00

We weren't allowed to go to the playground, If there were other children there, and if we were there and others arrived, we had to leave. Apparently, we would be bullied.
We couldn't go swimming because we would be bullied..
See the theme developing?

Others included my brother having a girls style bike, presumably so I wouldn't kick off at him getting a boys' bike, lol.
Weirdly, I could wear jeans, t shirts, etc, and look fairly boyish. I was a massive tomboy, my hero was George from famous five.
I wasn't allowed to go on a bike ride with my cousin. He and a friend went on a camp/ bike expedition. I was a)too young
b) a girl
Still bitter!

Djthhtk9494 · 07/07/2024 17:00

And no bubblegum or chewing gum.

wastingtimeonhere · 07/07/2024 17:02

Oh and a dog like Timmy!!! I have had dogs since I was 21! My present dog is everything I dreamed of! She would make a great Timmy!

PianPianPiano · 07/07/2024 17:05

Turn the TV on unless we had something specific we wanted to watch (and then it went back off again after!).

PermanentTemporary · 07/07/2024 17:06

Watch TV in the morning (exceptions for election results, royal weddings and having a day off school sick). Tbf there wasn't much on in the mornings anyway.

ITV. I didn't realise we didn't watch it for a long time as we only got the Radio Times so we only knew about BBC programmes(can't remember when that changed!)

Milk bottles or any sort of food packaging on the table. Tbh I've gone back to this as I get older.

My mother would have banned quite a lot of things if she'd realised it was likely to be an option I would consider (black bras, sex before marriage, tons of other things) but luckily she just assumed that the UK in 1986 was exactly the same as it had been in 1950, so I wouldn't even have the idea in my head.

I will say though that she never considered banning me from reading ANYTHING and was a great mum so ❤️

Djthhtk9494 · 07/07/2024 17:06

And no Barbie or Pippa dolls only boring vanilla Sindy.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/07/2024 17:07

Have a shower in the morning before school? Absolutely not.

Hence my being bullied about having greasy hair for most of my secondary school life.

Djthhtk9494 · 07/07/2024 17:07

Yes no food packaging on tables. My mum still decants everything into glass dishes and uses proper honey and jam spoons. Shes in her 80s!

Djthhtk9494 · 07/07/2024 17:09

Yet I was allowed to go off on my bike all day at 6 for miles with my 4 year old sister balanced on the handle bars!

Iwant2beJessicaFletcher · 07/07/2024 17:14

Lots. I wasnt allowed to:

Watch grange Hill
Make myself a drink without asking
Shave my legs
Have my ears pierced
Eat any snacks - only main meals allowed
Leave any of my dinner (despite not liking it & my parents knowing this before they made it)

I think this is typical for most people born in the early/mid 80s and who grew up in the 90s.

shockthemonkey · 07/07/2024 17:19

Drop my Ts
Swear
Chew gum
Miss mass/confession

LutonBeds · 07/07/2024 17:21

Get my ears pierced - hated my parents for this. I now have 5 in one ear and 4 in the other.

Get a job - long story short; my mate could’ve got me a job with her relative. Dad wouldn’t allow it as it was ‘illegal’ 🙄 as I was (officially) too young at 13. Then got constantly annoyed that I didn’t have a job at 16. No, because everyone else already had 3 years experience.

Never let me cook, iron, use the washing machine. Then, again, constant annoyance that I couldn’t do it when I was older.

Couldn’t just take food from cupboard/fridge. Everything was accounted for, to eat on particular days. Even now, I still sometimes feel ‘guilty’ for just eating that nice bar of chocolate or box of biscuits and not keeping it for an ‘occasion’.

In some ways they were weirdly overprotective/controlling (ear piercing and getting a job) but then were happy for me to have a paper round (as it was ‘legal’) and tramp round the streets in the dark 🤷‍♀️.

ParrotPirouette · 07/07/2024 17:22

Do we have the same now? Will our children write threads like these in the future?
‘I wasn't allowed Netflix, only Disney+’

Mine have all been mentioned and it was the fear of looking common; no eating in the street or chewing gum.
i wasn’t allowed to use tampons because my mum thought it meant that you were no longer a virgin. Assume she meant a broken hymen.

My children weren’t allowed to put the tv on in the morning before school. Sensible reason though, it distracted them and caused them to be late and difficult to get out of the door.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 07/07/2024 17:23

I wasn’t allowed to wear black shoes!!

buttnut · 07/07/2024 17:24

I remember a friend wasn’t allowed to wear ankle bracelets for some reason

ParrotPirouette · 07/07/2024 17:25

I’ve just remembered something else, not sure if it falls under the category of ‘things you weren’t allowed to do’ but I remember my mum ranting at me when I was about 12 that if I ever got myself pregnant before I got married she’d disown me and kick me out of the house.
I was gobsmacked and said absolutely nothing of course but now I think WTF?? What sort of mother would do that rather than support her daughter in a potentially difficult situation?
