Go on the computer too long

OP posts:
ThePeopleDemandMoreBenAndHolly · 07/07/2024 09:53

Wear or buy disney princess dresses
Drama lessons / stage school

No idea why! They had a lot of money, but still inverse snobbery. Dad was a supposed socialist, mum from a socialist family but a lot more centre leaning, politically.

I tried to live vicariously through my dd but she hates disney princesses 😂. Oh well

I was not allowed to attend music concerts until age 16 so I sadly missed the Stranglers and the audience ripping up 26 seats lol.

I was also not allowed to sleep in late which I rarely did but this was a stupid rule as young people need more sleep not less sleep.

OctoblocksAssemble · 07/07/2024 10:01
  • Ride a bike (still can't)
  • Get my ears pierced (tbf, by the time I could get it done the appeal had long since gone)
  • eat meat from stalls at fun fairs, chips only! (I ignore this one now) *buy penny sweets from the corner shop. The guy gave them out by (unwashed) hand. I did get a spectacular case of diarrhea from ignoring that one and never did it again.
Midsummernightsdreaming · 07/07/2024 10:02

I wasn't allowed to bring a ouija board into the house.

readingmakesmehappy · 07/07/2024 10:04

Watch TV in the morning.
Listen to pop music.
Have those flashing trainers.
Play computer games.

Maddy70 · 07/07/2024 10:09

Watch ITV. It was too common ,)

Miley1967 · 07/07/2024 10:10

Eat Jaffa cakes.

user1471538283 · 07/07/2024 10:14

So many!

Watch Jim'll fix it. If it was on my DF would shout at the TV. He hated him (with good reason).

Eat in the street because it's common (this was from my DGM and she was right. I never let my DS do it either).

Have unwrapped pick and mix or popcorn from the bins because people are dirty. Again my DF was right and I never let my DS do this.

Wonder around with my friends without having something to do. They could come to ours or me go to theirs or we could do something. Again he was right.

He would ask me when I would be home and if I was going to be late to ring him. I always thought it was over the top but he worried so.

My dear DF. He used to say that he didn't care what others did, I was precious. Thank goodness he cared because my DM didn't.

gardenmusic · 07/07/2024 10:24

Climb on the garage roof. Somewhere there is a cine film of me raging and stamping because my brothers would not let me up there with them. 'It's not for girls!'

It's where they used to get away from me.

WinterKate · 07/07/2024 10:28

I wasn't allowed to have a bath when I had a cold in case it made me more ill!

LoobyDoop2 · 07/07/2024 10:38

Be a drum majorette. I wanted to be one so, so badly and spent hours and hours practising chucking sticks up and down and twirling them around, all to no avail. I think the main appeal was the cute little uniform, but my mum wouldn’t even consider it, not for a second.

Coastalcreeksider · 07/07/2024 10:41

Not allowed to eat with a tray on lap, always sat up to the table.

fieldsofbutterflies · 07/07/2024 10:47

Go to McDonalds (or other fast food places)
Eat sweets
Have pets
Watch ITV
Watch stuff like The Simpsons or South Park
Watch soaps
Wear anything with characters on

They had very fixed ideas about what was "suitable" - as soon as I was old enough, I did all the above and still do over two decades later, lol.

Summerinspringtime · 07/07/2024 11:00

There were lots of things I never had.
A Tiny Tears Doll. A Girl’s World. A bike. A Cadburys mini chocolate machine. A soda stream. I could name many, many more.
I remember not having a Kagool when it was raining even though mum bought herself one.
She wouldn’t buy me a duvet either, I had to make do with horrible blankets.
No food was banned but I ate very little. Everything was home cooked and it didn’t taste nice so I hardly ate. Wish I could say the same now!
I couldn’t use the phone until after 6pm.
There was never any talk about sex, periods or puberty. I learnt everything from my older cousin which was not the best way to learn!

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 07/07/2024 11:05

I wasn't allowed to get a Mr Frosty. To be fair she was right, my mother in law got one for my daughter and it's absolutely crap. Only used it twice now it's shoved to the back of a cupboard

Soluckyinlove · 07/07/2024 11:05

I wasn't allowed to have any comics. Obviously I read the ones belonging to my friends at school. At home I would read either newspapers (News of the World, Sun), or my dad's Reveille and Weekend. All probably totally age inappropriate for a six/seven year old.

I wasn't allowed to wear comfy clothes to play out and NEVER jeans. Once I left home I rarely wore anything but jeans for decades.

Never allowed to "make a mess" in the house.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 07/07/2024 11:06

Watch the soaps.
Take packed lunches.
Get a pet.

Quisisana · 07/07/2024 11:09

thaegumathteth · 06/07/2024 23:15

Go guising (trick or treating)
Eat anywhere but at the dining table
Have no shoes on unless in actual bed

What? You had to wear shoes in bed?

  • Trick or treating (awful American holiday, see also Father's Day)
  • watch ITV
  • watch tv before 3pm unless ill
  • bubble gum
  • buy drinks when out as you could easily wait until you get home (buying coffee still seems extravagant!)
runningonberocca · 07/07/2024 11:11

No drinking Coke
Not allowed get my ears pierced
No computer games
No tampons (!) - apparently they meant I was having sex
And very oddly not allowed to cut my hair. Got a friend to cut me a fringe when I was 12 and my mother went absolutely mental. Cried, wouldn’t speak to me etc. As an adult I still can’t get my head around this reaction to a fringe!!!

IneedsomeSleeppleasenow · 07/07/2024 11:12

Not allowed to say lie/liar (had to say fib / fibber) or Boobs (had to say bossoms!)

BrickleSticks19 · 07/07/2024 11:24

Alwaystired23 · 07/07/2024 09:49

Oh yes, the problem pages, my favourite. I often think that's why I like mn so much. It's like a problems page, but you can get instant advice. Can you imagine having to write your problem, post it, and wait until it's published. They were probably made up in the magazines, though!

😂. That’s just unlocked a childhood memory of my friend and I sending in a ridiculous, fake problem. I don’t think it was printed, at least I hope not!

Teddleshon · 07/07/2024 11:26

Have my ears pierced as it’s “common”. I’m about to turn 60 and my mother is 95, I’m thinking bugger it, I know she will literally never ever shut up about it but I don’t think I can wait any longer!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/07/2024 11:26

Oh, just pick something that you'd expect a child to be able to do, have, eat, drink or experience and it'll be that.

Whatever it was, it would be 'too good' for me, I was 'allergic to it', I'd look stupid and ruin it, it would 'just send you stupid', I'd only hurt myself or embarrass her, I didn't really want it/didn't need it/didn't deserve it or only stupid rich people had that sort of thing.

Start at being allowed to wash more than once a week (yes, wash, not a scrap of water was permitted to touch me outside Sunday evening), grow more than one size in shoe or clothes in a year or eat anything that wasn't the cheapest, lowest quality processed version and then move on to having friends, thinking I was special in any way, leaving the house after 4pm or at weekends/holiday, having a clean, safe environment or looking at her a bit funny.

Go on, I dare you.😄

I always thought my parents were strict but they were a breeze compared to some of yours!

BobnLen · 07/07/2024 11:37

I wasn't allowed to have a Spirograph, this was in the late 60s. I also wasn't allowed to wear long socks in the Spring through to Autumn, just ankle socks
