Be an individual

LyndaSnellsSniff · 06/07/2024 23:33

Ha! ITV (or Idiot Vision in our house!) was banned. Weirdly, my parents still don't watch it. I once asked my mum if she was a Downton Abbey fan and she said "no. It's typical ITV rubbish." I know that if it was a BBC programme, they'd love it!

I was never allowed to wear my lovely white tucker boots that I bought at jumble sale. I could never understand this as so many of our clothes were jumble sale purchases.

Not allowed to drink Coke. Own brand colas were tolerated at Christmas, but genuine Coke? No way.

littleredcaravan · 06/07/2024 23:33

Sleepovers. My mum refused most of the time.

Now I get it.

Fucking hate sleepovers. Either have kids here dicking about all night then dossing around all morning. Or I get my own kids back tired and grumpy after doing the same at someone else's house.

MrsStottlemeyer · 06/07/2024 23:34

Eat chocolate
Eat fast food
Have 'girl' toys Care Bears, MLP, Barbie,
Wear 'girl' clothes, I desperately wanted patent leather shoes, frilly socks and a party dress. I had kickers, dungarees and a duffle coat,

MrsStottlemeyer · 06/07/2024 23:35

Also couldn't say bum or belly!

HcbSS · 06/07/2024 23:35

Stay in school uniform after school
Sleep anywhere other than own bed

Ironically I was the child who would have been allowed coco pops and milkshakes (on special occasions) and I hated both! Friends were jealous!

I wasn’t allowed to cry.

Also wasn’t allowed to speak in the wrong tone of voice, though I never understood what that meant so was always getting it wrong.

Bless you ♥️ I hope you've had a better adulthood

Wasn't allowed to throw balls in the house.

Is anyone allowed to do this?

KohlaParasaurus · 06/07/2024 23:41

Get my ears pierced. (I had them done when I was 17 and my parents didn't notice for weeks. My younger sisters were then allowed to have their ears pierced when they were 12.)
Call adults - any adults - by their first names.
Use even mildly offensive language.

DutchTeenyPixie · 06/07/2024 23:43

Crinkle cut chips. Had to be straight cut every time. I love buying them now, feels oddly rebellious 😂

DinnaeFashYersel · 06/07/2024 23:46

I was allowed to do all these things. 🤣

DinnaeFashYersel · 06/07/2024 23:47

I wasn't allowed to swear

StuffYouCantSay · 06/07/2024 23:47

Have a voice.

DinnaeFashYersel · 06/07/2024 23:47

I wasn't allowed to swear

My brother was allowed to swear but I wasn’t!

Apileofballyhoo · 06/07/2024 23:52

Crinkle cut chips too, never bought, so they must have been a lot more expensive.

ltscoldonthesidelines · 06/07/2024 23:55

Wear polyester or nylon.

KnottyKnitting · 06/07/2024 23:56

Watch TV on Saturday mornings. In fact, not really watch much TV at all!

Have long hair with pigtails or pony tails. All my friends had pretty bobbles in their hair. Mine was always cut in a wonky fringe and cut round my very large stick out ears...

Have nice shoes. Everything had to be "practical" and hard wearing. I wanted "kickers" but my mum only let me have the Clarke's equivalent ( same price) which had an ugly crepe wedge sole.

JohnPrescottsPyjamas · 06/07/2024 23:57

Bring peacock feathers or heather into the house! My mother was irrationally superstitious.

No whistling - it wasn’t ‘ladylike’
Wash my hair during my period.
Eat in the street.

thaegumathteth · 06/07/2024 23:58

Say pig or bum or belly or aye

Nix32 · 07/07/2024 00:00

Watch Eastenders

Shityshitybangbang · 07/07/2024 00:02

No fizzy bought. I felt we were the only family in the street who didn’t get the bonacord van

MysticCT · 07/07/2024 00:04

We couldn't watch a repeat of a programme if we had originally watched it, they did apply this rule to themselves as well but seemed to have changed their minds when they both retired and starting watching the UK Drama and Gold tv channels.
Looking back it seems such a strange rule.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 07/07/2024 00:07

Not allowed to have ears pierced. Not allowed to eat in the street. Not allowed to leave food.

KathrynWheel · 07/07/2024 00:17

No more than 3 biscuits in one day. Not allowed to watch The Sweeney, Within these Walls or Charlie's Angels. Not in our house but Grandma used to cut page three out of the newspaper before giving the newspaper to Grandad.

BruFord · 07/07/2024 00:20

No TV at all until I was 10!
