Looks pretty good to me! What are people's thoughts?

I am happy too, with the exception of Annalise Dodds as Minister for Women and Equalities. It doesn't augur well that she wasn't able to tell LBC which public lavatory a trans woman should use, despite being asked eight times. So the fight for women-only spaces is set to continue...

I thought that was her shadow role, and noone had been appointed yet?

He looks like he's been in power for years. He's done bloody well.

Doesn't he? Confident but not arrogant. I was very impressed with the press conference.

Shouting loudly doesn't meant you're right.

GenX/Millennials are the first generations to be poorer than preceding generations.

And doubling down. Congratulations.

I read recently that there's a global problem with human fertility. Sperm counts have massively declined ? due to pollution?

Natures way of getting rid of the blight that is the human race

cakeorwine · 06/07/2024 17:53

It was nice to have a press conference without dog whistles and 3 word slogans on the lectern.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 06/07/2024 17:52

And doubling down. Congratulations.

You've got issues.

VJBR · 06/07/2024 17:53

I have just read he wants to go easy on prisoners. Yep! A really good start.

SallyWD · 06/07/2024 17:54

MaisieMacabe · 06/07/2024 17:50

Brilliant. Not arrogant, not victorious, just measured, intelligent and responsible.
What a change!

Completely agree. Seeing the Cabinet filed with highly intelligent experts in their fields is just amazing! And cabinet members come from a real mix of backgrounds.

I have just read he wants to go easy on prisoners. Yep! A really good start.

You mean....

Prevent people going to prison in the first place by trying to reduce the ways people fall into crime?

Does prison work?

Or are there better ways?

Brandonsflowers · 06/07/2024 17:55

I agree the state pension should be means tested.

My parents are both mid 70s. My mum was one of the last to get the pension at 60. The amount of state money they receive is ridiculous when you consider that my dad is still working in a fantastically paid job, they're both in reasonable good health, they're mortgage free in a house worth half a million quid and my mum earns an income from investments. But they are entitled to state pension and winterfuel payments. Even they admit its ridiculous.

Young people now have it much harder than we did. I'm approaching 60. Its much harder now. And saying its ageist to say that is plain stupid.

Saying that young people's hardship is due to the previous generation is ageist. It's more due to Blair bringing in Uni fees, lack of routes to work such as apprenticeships, and the total failure of government after government to replace stock sold off with right to buy.
So governments of all stripes.

FangsForTheMemory · 06/07/2024 17:59

I think there are a lot of people here who aren't old enough to remember what proper politicians are like! Even the Tories used to be quite reasonable.

dollybird · 06/07/2024 17:51

Phew. You're right. I saw her in this morning's Cabinet and made an assumption. Her name card says Minister of State for Development, presumably in Lammy's FCDO.

DeerOhDear · 06/07/2024 18:00

I was impressed.
I thought he sounded very humble, very determined and keen to get on with it.
The end of all his frustrations in the wings :finally he has a chance.
I was extremely pleased he stressed he is not about tribal politics. Ideally we must move away from that mindset.

I feel quietly hopeful so far!

  • I didn't vote Labour.

I love the appointment of James Timpson - prisons minister with actual experience of prisons and employment of offenders. I am a huge fan of his family and their business so yay!

Yes. Imagine giving people jobs based on their skills and experience rather than school tie. Novel and grown up. Love it.

Means testing the state pension- own goal.

Well that me winding down my effort to save for retirement
what’s the point

Stellarcasted · 06/07/2024 18:02

King Charles told starmer he must be exhausted and on his knees.

Well he didn't look tired to me. He's done more actual work in one day than the tories have done in months.

Presumably you also cheered when Cameron was given the role of Foreign Secretary?

I agree to a point, but there is something intrinsically unfair about people paying into a system for years (I know it does not go into a pot for THEIR pension) and then being told there's nothing for them when it's their turn.
I think an unintended consequence would be that people would 'get rid' of their money earlier in life by spending it if they were on the cusp of not getting anything because their assets/income was too high.
I do think that the blanket freebies for pensioners should go though - my mum had so much money in her bank account that she didn't even notice the £600 winter fuel payment this year.
There is something wrong about paying blanket large amounts of money to the generation that probably the most asset-rich generation at the moment.
There should be fewer and fewer people relying on the state pension entirely as more people retire as my generation (late 50s) were well aware of private and company pensions and have had every opportunity to make additional arrangements for their retirement (which is probably another thing that would be stopped by many is the state pension was means tested)

PPE contracts. Track and Trace.

You really want to go there?

No he is being realistic about what he has inherited, a failed courts system and lack of prison places.

CurlewKate · 06/07/2024 18:12

@BaconBrownSauce "Presumably you also cheered when Cameron was given the role of Foreign Secretary?"

I missed the bit where he is an expert in diplomacy, international relations and negotiation......

I think this is just a made up thing on the internet by someone.

They have been in power for a day and no budget has taken place.
