Looks pretty good to me! What are people's thoughts?

King Charles told starmer he must be exhausted and on his knees.

Well he didn't look tired to me. He's done more actual work in one day than the tories have done in months.

More work than the idle Boris Johnson ever did, except in the bedroom.

@Mumteedum Being PM is not mon to fri 9 to 5.
Surely he knew this before he took the very highly paid job on.

A bit like being in the forces. Ready for anything, at any time. Without the salary!

Well yes, of course. He is clearly capable and willing. Just thinking of his family too and his team. Just wish they could all have had a bit of rest, in a human level. Even the king expressed some kind concern yesterday about the same thing!

Apolloneuro · 06/07/2024 18:14

Poor little Tories are such sore losers. Too used to getting their own way.

This thread just shows there are some people on here who don't read stuff and just listen to soundbites. And repeat them. Without thinking.

I am sure those posters understand that he said he wants to protect family time on Friday evenings but would do what is needed should the worst happen at that time.

What a silly post. And adds nothing to the debate.

ACynicalDad · 06/07/2024 18:18

I’m a reluctant Tory and have been impressed. If this is a sign of things to come I could be a convert in 5 years.

Workbabysleeprepeat · 06/07/2024 18:19

I would be amazed if they means test pensions. Labour really need 2 terms to make a real difference and if they alienate a large number of people by saying they will take even more from them then 2 terms might be difficult. I think they will go after Capital gains, IHT, windfall taxes, actual wealth and not more money from workers at any income. I wasn’t sure about Kier Starmer but he has impressed me with his intent so far.

So a whole weekend for the country without a leader? Not really an option.

I like that he is going to visit the four nations and then go to NATO. It shows that he is serious about governing for everyone.

Wouldn't be without a leader. He's still there... just like when he needs to sleep or eat or do any other normal human things.

Pudmyboy · 06/07/2024 18:23

This article is from 2016, any update on this?

You pay for mine as I paid for the generation before. That's how it's always worked.
Blaming the previous generation is simply scapegoating and ageist.
Yes estate agents are always pushing prices up, including for renting.
Yes the retirement age is going up, with the expectation of improving health outcomes for the next generation. People used to die a fews years post retirement when the age was originally set, so it is not surprising it has been reviewed. I am not yet near retirement despite passing the original retirement age due to the changes brought in and I can see the point.
Give over with the ageism.

Life expentency is reducing now. Those born c1930 maybe the longest lived ever.

Everysand · 06/07/2024 18:30

The people that get the final salary pensions like NHS and teachers will probably be first in line not to get a state pension if it's means tested

Another reason not to work in either sector then.

GrandhotelB · 06/07/2024 18:34

Good luck to him, I hope all goes well. I am however nervous about what he intends to do with all the people in hotels and ones en route. Rwanda was bonkers in many ways but that money was already spent. Now he’s binned it off entirely without really saying what his plan is. His ‘smashing’ of criminal gangs isn’t really clear.

For the new arrivals granted LTR; housing, sorting their benefits, explaining that it’s not what the smugglers told them it would be etc, is an absolute nightmare, their expectations are nowhere near in line with reality. Some of them get really very cross. People always think of the boats but there are far more on the lorries.

If Kier gives the impression that it’s all going to be much more generous and supportive, which I feel he has to be fair, who, with what and where is going to organise this? Because it’s a situation that’s happening right now and staff have already had enough. Then there is the social tensions simmering in many areas. People ain’t so liberal and welcoming when it’s suddenly their problem. It’s going to be an interesting summer. But I presume he knows what to do, he must do mustn’t he?

The beginning of his term is not the time to take a weekend off. He will have had an immense number of things to decide about, learn about, plan about and organise. The electorate needs to see the country being run.

This really doesn't bother the majority of women. I couldnt care less if someone identifies as a woman, cat or a house plant

Everyone should be treated with respect

I assure you - it does.

remind me how many votes party of women got?

Hedgeoffressian · 06/07/2024 18:36

Means texting the state pension - so they’ve only been in power for 5 minutes and already done a lot of damage.

Another reason not to work in either sector then.

Don't get me started on that one. A teacher friend of mine who spent her entire working life complaining about her pay has gone strangely silent after she retired at 55.
First year new kitchen, second year new car. Poor old public sector.

Frenchie91 · 06/07/2024 18:35

Party for women wasn’t listed on my ballot paper and I voted Conservative to try and keep Labour out. I won’t be alone in this.

lofthatch · 06/07/2024 18:38

I didn't vote for him but I enjoyed the Press conference and thought that if he can keep up that momentum, people (like me) will begin to trust him. It will take time though and we'll need actions, not just words. Watching carefully!

As for taking the weekend off, sounds lovely but if they did that, the Media would have had them for breakfast! 'Lazy, entitled, blah blah'.

Their 'no time to waste' approach is a very good PR strategy.

Lalalacrosse · 06/07/2024 18:39

Is there a decent summary anywhere? The bits I’ve caught have actually been interesting. Admitting that the NHS and the prison system are in fact broken - not something I ever expected the government to admit. Maybe they are actually going to be the grownups
in the room.

I thought their campaign was frankly crap, but as starts go I’m not rolling my eyes…

Yeah they would, you're right. I know it's not at all realistic. It would just be nice in a kinder world. He does seem itching to crack on to be fair. It's just me being soppy.

Did he say this?

About bloody time

Agreed. Someone has to burst the bubble on that Ponzi scheme eventually.

itsgettingweird · 06/07/2024 18:46

Braverman is absolutely mortified at him winning.

That's enough to convince me it's a good thing Grin
