Looks pretty good to me! What are people's thoughts?

Means testing the state pension- own goal.

god. what's the cut off going to be? who decides?

what if you've planned relying on the state pension.

For self employed people making sure you've contributed is basically contributing to an earned benefit by having to pay direct debits. If you've done that for years and get nothign if you are just over the threshold...

I mean say the means testing cut off is £20k. £20k private pension + £10k state is a good income. £ 20k alone is considerably less and the impact gets worse the lower it is.

makes me feel sick.

won't self employed people just stop contributing if it is a gamble as to whether you will get it or not when you retire?

Very happy so far, especially with finally having 50% women appointed.
I thought they said Keir didn't know what a woman was but he seems to have appointed enough to have proper equality right at the top for the first time ever.

I am happy too, with the exception of Annalise Dodds as Minister for Women and Equalities. It doesn't augur well that she wasn't able to tell LBC which public lavatory a trans woman should use, despite being asked eight times. So the fight for women-only spaces is set to continue...

You think estate agents are the reason house prices have gone up?

Well I'm paying for your pension, I'm also stuck renting... and will have to retire much older than you....

You pay for mine as I paid for the generation before. That's how it's always worked.
Blaming the previous generation is simply scapegoating and ageist.
Yes estate agents are always pushing prices up, including for renting.
Yes the retirement age is going up, with the expectation of improving health outcomes for the next generation. People used to die a fews years post retirement when the age was originally set, so it is not surprising it has been reviewed. I am not yet near retirement despite passing the original retirement age due to the changes brought in and I can see the point.
Give over with the ageism.

He’s the prime minister for goodness sake! People who need to sit around settling in don’t really go in for this kind of job.

He’s a former v senior lawyer and Director of Public Prosecutions.

The PM’s hours are probably fewer than those roles require! 😀😉. He will certainly have more personnel support anyway!

Frenchie91 · 06/07/2024 17:39

Thrilled to see the appointment of James Timpson to MOJ.

it feels amazing to have grown ups back in charge, and appointing qualified and experts into the jobs.

I have not been ageist.

I am saying the same as you

Just as we all have to accept the retirement age is changing, we also have to accept that conditions such as taxation may also have to change to fit with the needs and changes in our society. You're argument is that you should get it because you've paid in, and I'm saying everyone has!

Means testing the state pension- own goal.

Did he say this?

About bloody time

Pudmyboy · 06/07/2024 17:44

Actually @BusyCM the lack of housing started with 'Right to buy' and failure of councils to build stock to replace the ones sold, coupled with private landlords getting their mortgage on a nice property paid by the rent they charge on a shabby ill maintained properties, plus estate agents pushing prices ever upwards

It's not voluntary. We pay it through self assessment. (NI for self employed I mean)

heinzseight · 06/07/2024 17:47

The grown ups are finally in the room. We're not used to it so it's a bit of a shock to the system.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 06/07/2024 17:47

BusyCM · 06/07/2024 17:05

Your generation had their fortune in other areas, such as cheap housing. You can't have everything and just let the generation behind you pick up the tab.

Here we go with the blatant ageism.

ruffler45 · 06/07/2024 17:47

Its gone Friday 1800, they will be on overtime for weekend working!!😂

Is it ageist to state facts?

Pudmyboy · 06/07/2024 17:47

No, not paid in: paid out already to the generation before, hence it would be unfair to say this generation can't have it despite having paid for the previous generation.

MadMonstera · 06/07/2024 17:48

He looks like he's been in power for years. He's done bloody well.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 06/07/2024 17:48

And again.

Tel12 · 06/07/2024 17:49

I think that it's a good start, when you look at the last lot. How much they can do quickly remains to be seen. For everyone's sake I hope they do well.

Dinnerdinnerchickenwinner · 06/07/2024 17:49

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 06/07/2024 17:48

And again.

Shouting loudly doesn't meant you're right.

GenX/Millennials are the first generations to be poorer than preceding generations.

BusyCM · 06/07/2024 17:49

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 06/07/2024 17:47

🙄 oh stop it. Explaining why things have to move with the generations is not ageist.

You don't seem to mind when the tories screw over young people.... is that ageist?

Pudmyboy · 06/07/2024 17:50

Dinnerdinnerchickenwinner · 06/07/2024 17:47

Is it ageist to state facts?

Is it fact? I am from the generation you are talking about, and have always rented, never earned enough to get on the housing ladder as a single person. I know I am not alone!

MaisieMacabe · 06/07/2024 17:50

Brilliant. Not arrogant, not victorious, just measured, intelligent and responsible.
What a change!

hastalava · 06/07/2024 17:51

If State Pension is ever means tested, does that mean that access to NHS free healthcare will also be means tested?

Wow that was a leap! Where did the poster say they supported screwing over young people!?!

ssd · 06/07/2024 17:51

Young people now have it much harder than we did. I'm approaching 60. Its much harder now. And saying its ageist to say that is plain stupid.

VJBR · 06/07/2024 17:51

fedupdontknowwheretoputmyself · 06/07/2024 16:11

Not really. It's going to be part of addressing the challenge of an ageing population and low birth rate. If older people have enough to live on why would they need a government hand out?

So are they going to reimburse all the hardworking people for their contributions paid over the years. It is sickening. Work hard and get bugger all.
