Looks pretty good to me! What are people's thoughts?

Means texting the state pension - so they’ve only been in power for 5 minutes and already done a lot of damage.

Except this hasn't happened.

So you're ok

Frenchie91 · 06/07/2024 18:49

In the day and age where the device in your hand literally holds all the information in the world, it’s frankly terrifying how quickly fake news and misinformation spreads.

MichaelAndEagle · 06/07/2024 18:50

Why are people saying this about pensions? That wasn't announced.
Can we stick to the facts.

BIWI · 06/07/2024 18:52

Can ANYONE provide a link to confirm that Labour have said that they're means-testing pensions? Or is only GB News supporters who are saying this?

Georgyporky · 06/07/2024 18:52

fedupdontknowwheretoputmyself · 06/07/2024 16:11

Not really. It's going to be part of addressing the challenge of an ageing population and low birth rate. If older people have enough to live on why would they need a government hand out?

It's not a government hand-out.

It's a return of tax & NI paid over a lifetime of work.

Same principle as private pensions.

TeamPolin · 06/07/2024 18:53

I liked his first speech - all that stuff about the politics of service definitely hit a positive note. There's been a lot of focus over the past few years about how he's full and wooden. To me, he just seemed like someone who was a deep thinker and took the job seriously - which after Boris etc will be a refreshing change.

Can't seem to link to it but it's on LBC Twitter feed

People are fascinating.

Who knows who and why people are posting misinformation on this thread.

Seriously

No budget has taken place - and this is where taxes get announced.

I guess you knew that?

TheFormidableMrsC · 06/07/2024 18:58

I was really impressed with the press conference today. He strikes me as somebody who is prepared to roll his sleeves up and get stuck in. There is none of the Bojo theatrics thank goodness. He is clear and calm and I hope this continues. I did vote Labour on this occasion.

EasternStandard · 06/07/2024 18:58

cakeorwine · 06/07/2024 18:13

I think this is just a made up thing on the internet by someone.

They have been in power for a day and no budget has taken place.

If it does it will be big news so I’ll wait to see

Songsareliketattoos · 06/07/2024 18:58

Hedgeoffressian · 06/07/2024 18:35

I assure you - it does.

I genuinely don't have any friends who are concerned about this issue. Not all women think or feel the same as you do.

equisetum · 06/07/2024 18:59

There will be uproar if this is true. It's never been a benefit.

We had to pay into it. If you didn't pay enough in then you wouldn't get the full state pension. It's pro rata on what you pay in.

That would be the quickest route to Starma doing his farewell speech.

So no need to panic

Applepencilplant · 06/07/2024 19:01

I love how straightforward and honest he is.
And he's using the millions of pounds media room Boris build and never used.

When taxes etc will be announced.

Yep

No point in thinking it’s happening until announced

Exactly

The great thing about misinformation is how easily it can be rebuked and fact checked

I hope they bring critical thinking on to the school curriculum.

GB News are reporting that an advisor has told Starmer 'action must be taken on pensions'

So - an advisor. Not Starmer. Not the cabinet. Not in the manifesto. Not in Starmer's press conference.

So what has happened is that someone has reportedly said to Starmer that something needs to happen with pensions.

And people flock to the internet to insist that Labour have already started means-testing pensions and have caused 'a lot of damage'.

Aren't posters who spread this kind of misinformation a bit embarrassed?

TeenagersAngst · 06/07/2024 19:08

@cakeorwine I wasn't the one to raise it initially, I'm just flagging where it's been referenced. No idea who the guy talking about it even is...

But things like this often get leaked. Given he's cited as being a 'senior advisor' it would be odd for him just to start shooting his mouth off.

You do know how politics works right?

The press have spent years reporting, ‘a senior advisor to the government says…’ and then spouts something that may or may not be true.

Is it policy?
No

Have we had a budget?

No

I am sure lots of ideas are being talked about. But no monetary or taxes have been announced.

So this is misinformation.

But that doesn't stop some people jumping to conclusions

cakeorwine · 06/07/2024 19:12

Katypp · 06/07/2024 19:10

I don't think anyone has said it has already started, have they?

"Means testing the state pension- own goal."

And people jumped on that.

Without stopping to think.
