O things are looking up. Congratulations Jess, well deserved. And Nige daring to complain about someone else sullying his role in Parliament. Starting well by doing the same. How long before he's suspended? Utter oaf. And, best of all, and it's made my day, I've just realised Frank Hester's 15 million squids into Tory coffers was all for nowt. Sometimes Frank, money is not enough. Hurrah!

Hester is going to want something for his money.

Jess Phillips is back on the front benches, parliamentary under-secretary of state in the Home Office

🥳🥳

Notonthestairs · 09/07/2024 20:56

Just catching up on all the days events.
Very pleased to see Phillips back up front and Abbot being acknowledged. And love the picture of all the new MPs.

And the hilarious photos of Fartage & backing singers. Bercow really^^ got under their skin. It's been years - let it go!

Reading reports (leaked by Badenoch) of first Tory shadow cabinet meeting with Badenoch laying into Sunak for his campaign & suggesting Braverman is suffering from a very public nervous breakdown (!)
I presume it was leaked by Badenoch as it is definitely spun to put distance between her and the leadership - and simultaneously throwing some shade on Braverman.

I don't think. Braveman is having a public nervous breakdown.

She's always been a stroppy nasty piece of work when things don't go her way. It's just after 14 years they've gone further against her because the Tory's have lost power.

I think part of her toy throwing after the GE was because her majority from 2019 went from 24k to 6k.

I'm just pissed off the idiots in my constituency still voted her in!

Notonthestairs · 09/07/2024 21:08

I think that was just Badenoch having fun at Braverman's expense - also creating space between them as candidates.

She sucks the soul out of everything.

Sue Ellen is just being her own dear self, no different to the one we are all familiar with, just revealing a little more of her nature to delight her fans. She's got some, they have just - WHY? - voted for her. As for Badenoch, she and the Tory dregs deserve each other. Let them fight it out for our amusement.

I honestly think Sunak must have sacked his speech writer and comms team, he’s like a different human!

Opposition suits him.

Catching up on parliament tv now. Good to see lots of red.

That said, there is a certain schadenfreude reading (Daily Mail) headlines about "Boris Johnson (not even an MP) tears into Labour over ditching levelling up" and thinking "Who cares what you think ?". Both the paper and the protester.

Plus they haven’t ditched levelling up, of course - just the cringe name.

He looked relaxed, sounded sincere and even smiled Shock

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/07/2024 21:37

It really is ridiculous that we know how many MPs we have and we can’t fit them all in. Good job Sinn Fein don’t take up their seats. It’s probably about time the building was retired or just used as a museum.

TimeForRishiByeByes · 09/07/2024 21:39

I definitely agree the opposition bench suited sunak, I didn't see his whole speech but I thought what I did see was pretty excellent.

Soukmyfalafel · 09/07/2024 21:45

Joining this thread. I voted Labour as a tactical vote, otherwise would have voted Lib Dem as I liked their social care and housing policies. My Laboir MP got in by 18 votes. My vote really, really did count in the end. I felt I made the right choice after hearing that. My neighbouring hometown and current town turned red after only ever being blue (AFAIK). Interesting times.

I have been impressed so far. This lot ACTUALLY WANT TO GET SHIT DONE! That in itself is impressive.

The RW press have been very desperate and entertaining throughout all of this. Those dickheads couldn't stop this. Ha ha ha ha.

What is with the pictures of cats though?

If levelling up had been successful, then Labour wouldn't have the opportunity to ditch it.

prettybird · 09/07/2024 21:56

@Soukmyfalafel - it goes back many many threads (and even subject topics) Shock. The Westminstender (EU/Brexit mostly Remainer ) threads used to have people "Place Marking) - before it was easy to bookmark or watch a thread - and it morphed to "Place Mat King" and then to "Place Cat King" and then to photos of cats, pets and flowers Grin
Flowers

So there was a sort of logic Wink

Now it just helped to engender a sense of community Smile

We started these threads when Bozo was in charge. We needed the light relief.

I miss Bercow Smile

Me too. He was far better than Hoyle. Hoyle has always been a disappointment because he wouldn't hold the Tory cabinet members to account in the HoC.

Oh gosh, I remember the original Place Mat King typo, that takes me back. I used to be on the Westminstenders threads (as Icantreachthepretzels) but I left after the 2019 election because it had all become so depressing, I couldn't bear to pay attention any more. I'm really enjoying reading this thread now the grownups are back in charge.

Back in the day, my mum ran a one woman campaign against Andrea Jenkyns (whose constituency office was right by the morrisons my mum would shop in), and used to stick anti-brexit stickers on Jenkyns' noticeboard. Due to boundary changes, my mum found herself living in that constituency (having previously been with Rachel Reeves) and so had the great honour and delight of voting her arch nemesis out of office.

My mum is the opposite of me, though - I've re-engaged now there is something to be optimistic about, but she has decided to retire from the political life now she is happy to trust that her government is governing.

Lost the link but someone has joked that Lee Anderson is now chief whip of Reform and I can't stop chuckling at this 😃

I spotted similar - given it's only 5 MPs it's the equivalent of being the WhatsApp admin.
