We’ve managed to get through 55 threads over a period of years without discussing whatever you want to call it. We’ve also got through all those threads without hostility, despite numerous occasions when there’s been disagreement. I, for one, am very reluctant to see my favourite safe corner of MN spoilt.

I try very hard not to get involved in the FWR/Trans debate as it gets very hostile and very polarised very quickly as is being evidenced right now in this thread.

Women's rights are important, no one is saying they aren't but I have to agree with @BIossomtoes that we've agreed to leave that particular debate at the door on this thread, there are plenty of other threads to discuss this issue at great length and plenty of other issues to discuss here.

Housing affordability

Caring

Transport

Education

Early years provision

Poverty

Disability

Prison over capacity

All these disproportionately effect women. You can't have a title in this thread without alignment to the majority of the population in terms of sex. Female.

Totally agree. Has to be from everyone, though, not just aimed at shushing gc women.
Let FWR do their thing, we do ours.

That’s fair. I can’t see any problem with that.

NoDishiForRishi · 08/07/2024 14:08

I agree, we cant expect GC women to see things being said about FWR, exercising their right to reply and only them being told to leave it, that's not right or fair. Like @Saucery said, they do their thing, we do ours.

DuncinToffee · 08/07/2024 14:18

Sometimes it is just easier to roll your eyes and let it go

Yeah, agree. But Jane's joke was pretty innocuous and FWR dish out far, far worse tbh.

BIossomtoes · 08/07/2024 14:30

Shall we just drop it? 🙏

NoDishiForRishi · 08/07/2024 14:34

Look! I drew a picture of Larry..

That’s fab @NoDishiForRishi. You’re very talented!

What makes me most uncomfortable in politics, not just confined to the four nations, but also pan Europe, and the USA, is the rise of the far right.

It's discussed here though and should be.

So let's move on.

dontcallmelen · 08/07/2024 14:41

Oh that’s utterly fabulous @NoDishiForRishi
i don’t like to think of anyone being upset on these threads, they’ve been going for a very long time & are usually very even tempered & respectful I can see it from both sides in many ways, but would prefer if possible drop it & hopefully no one feels as though they have to leave the threads💐

He’s adorable. Any more thoughts on the Angela prints? I’d so love one.

I appreciate the above posts from @Saucery and @BIossomtoes re gc stuff. 😊

Does anyone know if I'm correct in thinking that the first day back in the House of Commons is tomorrow? Do you know what time?

It's just I'm on holiday (in UK) but it's one of my favourite memories from 1997, first day back after election and jostling for space on government benches!

Our new MP posted a pic of herself on her first walk to her new job - along the Thames. So I assumed it was today.

Whilst MPs will be in Westminster my understanding is that the House doesn't sit until tomorrow for the election of the speaker.

tobee · 08/07/2024 14:58

Ooh thanks for that!

Will it be Lindsey Hoyle being dragged to the bench? What other contenders might there be?

Zonder · 08/07/2024 15:06

I really hope it's not LH again, but I gather he's most likely to continue. He has been terrible in my opinion. DH and I were saying we thought the speaker was traditionally taken from the opposition party but then resigns their membership. So maybe there will be a Tory chosen this time?

TokyoSushi · 08/07/2024 15:07

Here's a question if anybody can enlighten me - why is John Swinney still the First Minister? Does it not pass to the leader of the largest party in Scotland?

TokyoSushi · 08/07/2024 15:08

I'd also very much like it to be somebody other than LH...

John Swinney is the leader of the largest party in the Scottish parliament.

I read somewhere that there won't be enough space on the government's backbenches so they will be spread over the 2 sides.
