Is anyone else thoroughly uninspired by Keir Starmar

Keir Starmar isn’t even officially PM yet, just feel he’s uninspiring. I’m a former Labour Party member but just not sure he’ll actually be able to make our lives better. He hasn’t given us much of a vision to get behind. He’s no Tony Blair or Jeremy Corbyn. He’s just not Tory?!

Hoping he’s a great PM but not getting that feeling.

I feel that Kier Starmar is fundamentally a decent man. I think his moral compass is in the right place. Maybe he is too nice to be prime minster but honestly after the personality politics of the last few years maybe solid & boring is what we need.

I guess time will tell..............

Myblindsaredown · 05/07/2024 12:09

I also think he’s a decent guy but I think he’s in trouble. Not just from the lefties in his own party but he’s made so many promises that are impossible to put in place. Not without bankrupting us as a country or taxing the already stretched working people.

Squareplate · 05/07/2024 12:10

Why do you need to be inspired by him?

He came from an ordinary background to lead the CPS. He took a political party that was dead on its feet and gave them a massive landslide.

Why are people determined he's not capable just because he comes across as a normal bloke more than the buffoons characters we've had over the last few years?

I was uninspired by him and Rishi Sunak tbh
I'm not sure its s bad thing him not being like Tony Blair, who for all his charisma had many faults
Or the Disaster that was Jeremy Corbyn though
He hasent impressed me as leader of the opposition ,but I'm willing to wait and see for the time being.

DisgruntledPelican · 05/07/2024 12:11

I don’t need to be inspired by him, I need him to be a solid PM and try to undo some of the worst excesses of the last 14 years.

Marvelo · 05/07/2024 12:12

I think he's going to be really good. He's not the most charismatic leader ever but he is a decent man and an excellent politician. He has turned Labour around in half the time I expected it would take. Looking forward to seeing what he does.

I also really rate Rachel Reeves and have done for years- saw her speak at an event just after the brexit referendum and she was outstanding.

MysteryofNils · 05/07/2024 12:13

I'm sure the Labour infighting will start now - they appear to have kept the unions largely quiet in the run up to yesterday!

Yes, you’re right stability is definitely needed.

I’m not sure if he’s too nice from his record a leader of the Labour Party or as head of public prosecutions. I think he’s decent of course and very clever but as you say definitely a bit boring.

I didn't vote labour but give him a chance! Let him do something before slagging him off.

tinydynamine · 05/07/2024 12:14

He / Labour have got about the same number of votes as JC git when he was in charge I believe. The landslide is only due to the nature of FPTP.

Yes, me too. Look where charisma got us with Boris.

And actually, 'boring' is good when it comes to leading us.

Eyesopenwideawake · 05/07/2024 12:15

This is a man who's taken the losing, unelectable, rabble of a Labour party from just five years ago and turn it into a disciplined, aligned, focused force which has won a massive majority.

If that's not inspiring what is?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 05/07/2024 12:15

He's never inspired me. I voted Labour just to get the Tories out. Job done. I want the Labour party now to find a leader who can actually read what the people want, and for Starmer to step off.

JC got way more in 2017 - 12 million

And 10 million in 2019

2024 Labour only just scraped more votes than Ed Miliband - 9 million

Not very inspiring.

Yes, exactly.

It’s a landslide but I think that’s why it feels a bit strange as it’s not really very convincing.

Did he though? It wasn't a landslide, the Tories lost, other parties gained from those losses.

So many people I know didn't want to vote Labour, myself included, but getting the Tories out was a priority. That's not inspiring, it's just pick the least bad. That said, Labour now has an opportunity to actually protect Women's Rights and build up confidence from their electorate - including women. Now that would be inspiring.

This. He strikes me as someone who fundamentally has integrity. Many/Any other politician would have breezily declared all sorts of crap to win votes. You can see that he is deeply uncomfortable bending the truth and would rather say nothing than imply otherwise and that hasn't done him any favours. I'm assuming it's his legal background too. I'm all for that rather than the BS of the Boris years.

Gordon Brown and others suffered from the same issue. Time has shown which of our politicians boring or anything but boring have delivered most for the people of this country and internationally.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 05/07/2024 12:20

I wish Gordon Brown was still heading up Labour. He was decent.

Thanks for the correction...so even less inspiring, and so fewer votes than BJ got in 2019 too. It's a sham basically.

Coconuthotchocolate · 05/07/2024 12:20

Nope not inspiring at all. No vision and I don’t see leadership. However, let’s just hope he’s competent and not corrupt or extremist. Thats enough for me.

you can see why turnout was low…as DP said this morning - we have a very low quality benchmark in our politicians to work from.

WirelessWendy · 05/07/2024 12:20

I don't want inspiration. I just want competence.

SwingingVoter · 05/07/2024 12:22

Yes unfortunately I'm hoping for the best op but I should feel more inspired
I should feel hope, but I don't.. During the campaign the only sense I got was "don't worry soon we will hit anyone who can afford private school and non dom status around the head with a big stick... Yeah.. Stick it to the man".
I've not heard one of reassuring plan of how they will action anything.

HowIrresponsible · 05/07/2024 12:22

Im a tory voter and I'm kinda glad Labour got in at this point with Starmer- by that I mean not as far left as you can get.

If they had to get in at least not when it was corbyn.

I think Labour are just tory by another name at the moment.
