Is anyone else thoroughly uninspired by Keir Starmar

Keir Starmar isn’t even officially PM yet, just feel he’s uninspiring. I’m a former Labour Party member but just not sure he’ll actually be able to make our lives better. He hasn’t given us much of a vision to get behind. He’s no Tony Blair or Jeremy Corbyn. He’s just not Tory?!

Hoping he’s a great PM but not getting that feeling.

It's actually really important for leaders to be able to communicate their messages well because they need to lead us. They need to take us with them on their polices etc.

grumpypedestrian · 05/07/2024 14:39

I don’t care about being inspired. I want someone trustworthy. He isn’t.

And why campaign with no promises? If you have no principles or plans you shouldn’t be trying to run a country.

I want someone who doesn’t u turn.

He dropped every pledge he made in his campaign to be Labour leader!!

Crikeyalmighty · 05/07/2024 14:39

@TakeOnFlea couldn't agree more- Farage is a kind of charismatic speaker who 'inspires' a certain sector of voters- (as was Johnson it seems)Farage is also an utter bullshitter who likes the sound of his own voice- (as did Johnson) be careful what you wish for-I will take dull and capable thanks if that's what he proves to be

Im a tory voter and I'm kinda glad Labour got in at this point with Starmer- by that I mean not as far left as you can get.

If they had to get in at least not when it was corbyn.

I think Labour are just tory by another name at the moment.

Hmm I'm also a Tory voter and not so sure this lot are Tory with another name.. might ask you again in a couple of months!! I'd be all for Labour and equality if I thought it would work.

RandomMess · 05/07/2024 14:42

I was chatting to a barrister friend who worked with him many times and said he was very charismatic and thoroughly nice/decent. She's a diehard Tory.

Churchview · 05/07/2024 14:46

Keir Starmer has been incredibly successful in every stage of his career so why would he be anything less than a successful PM?

ohthejoys21 · 05/07/2024 14:47

She went to Channing.. academic independent. would be surprised if she was anything other than a Tory

aramox1 · 05/07/2024 14:52

Boring! God give me strength. Do you want more politicians like Johnson?

I'm not doubting your friend ,but he doesn't come across as charismatic, mind you Tony Blair had an abundance of charisma and look what happened there!

Moonmelodies · 05/07/2024 14:58

Sir Keir "Jeffrey" Stahmer seems to say whatever people want to hear (except on school VAT and penis women)
Still, it's early days.

Well thank f--k he's no Tony Blair eh! I don't want a showboat I want a boring bloke whose going to focus on getting bin collections going properly, gets potholes sorted, improves the NHS, puts our taxes to better use in a consistent, conscientious way, and gets obsessed with all of that to improve the grind for us all. I'm sick of these 'have a pint down the pub with me' tossers. I don't need to be entertained.

I will never understand this cult of personality in politics. Boris Johnson was, arguably, one of the worst prime ministers this coutnry has ever had but becaue he was "likeable" everyone let him get away with it.

I don't want a prime minister I could go drinking with or who will come with me to a football match. I want a prime minister who is competent, sensible, pragmatic, effective. And THIS is what we're getting here. He has proven he is extraordinarily competent - in his first career as a barrister, then in his second as leader of the labour party and now, I hope, in his third as prime minister. As far as we know, he is broadly an honest and decent man.

I'm thrilled.

I'm not very eloquent, your post has summed up what I've been thinking and trying to say perfectly! I'm delighted with the result.

stormy4319trevor · 05/07/2024 15:13

I don't think Starmer has any firm ideas on how to improve the lives of UK citizens, and I don't remember him expressing much interest in the subject, but I'm hoping there are people in the Labour party who do. I don't remember any Conservative politicians being much enthused on this topic, either. Politicians generally seem a gloomy bunch who promise endless misery, but I hope the new government has some people with a couple of good ideas in it.

She has paid tax for some time!

She pays no tax as she is listed as non domiciliary

SkippysEar · 05/07/2024 15:14

Charisma of a damp rag, so said Nigel.

Even Rishi had more about him. As much as I didnt like Blair you couldn't fault he had bollocks like apples and owned every piece of shiz that left his mouth. Even Brown had a quiet confidence about him. But Starmer looks like the sort of guy that wouldnt say boo to a goose.

Ever since the story blew up she agreed to pay tax in the UK

grumpypedestrian · 05/07/2024 15:16

Honest???

He u turns constantly and doesn’t deliver on any pledges. I want someone trustworthy and expect him to drop all his pledges like he did when he became Labour leader.

Conveniently Starmer supporters have forgotten this.

Look at his abandoning Net Zero, there’s nothing honest or trust worthy about him.

Bignanna · 05/07/2024 15:15

That’s good of her. So it took a story blowing up to force her hand. Unbelievable

stormy4319trevor · 05/07/2024 15:19

I'm not feeling the public euphoria that we had in 1997. People seems to have reservations on whether the current Labour government are going to be better. Still, maybe we are all just traumatised after years of austerity and cuts to services.

TheBigStrawberry · 05/07/2024 15:21

I think he seems nice and reasonable. Far preferable to the clowns we've had the last few years.

As for his small vote share and large number of seats - he campaigned tactically, focussing energy on swing seats as opposed to Corbyn who got massive majorities in safe labour seats. That's why he won a landslide. He saw how it worked and made it work for him. Hopefully he can do the same with the country...

SkippysEar · 05/07/2024 15:22

Mind, he was better than Corbyn. Labour got that one so wrong, fielding a tramp as their leader!

leeverarch · 05/07/2024 15:32

Myblindsaredown · 05/07/2024 12:09

I also think he’s a decent guy but I think he’s in trouble. Not just from the lefties in his own party but he’s made so many promises that are impossible to put in place. Not without bankrupting us as a country or taxing the already stretched working people.

The country is already all but bankrupt, and it won't be ordinary working people they go after. They will be after the wealthy. You know, the the rich ones and the fat corporates the Tories have been bending over backwards to protect all these years.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 05/07/2024 15:38

I've never been inspired by any PM and I go back to the days of Anthony Eden.

waltzingparrot · 05/07/2024 15:39

The problem I have with Kier is that he doesn't seem to have any genuine beliefs of his own - it's why he's flip-flopped on virtually every policy. Surely he should have held firm on some things because he genuinely believes it's the right stance, but I think he's easily swayed by whichever end of the party is putting him under the most pressure. He seems weak to me.

I also used to get the same feeling with David Cameron. It was like "Tell me what you want me to believe in, and I'll believe in it (if it's a people pleaser and vote winner, that is)".

Is he going to knock off at 6pm today?

I hope he does, how many hours do you think he's been awake for? I don't begrudge him a few hours to have dinner with his family FFS. His kids are teenagers, imagine being 13/16 and your dad becoming PM! I'm sure he'll be working pretty hard over the weekend and he is allowed to eat!
