One thing you're confident Labour can sort/change

Have to admit, I've never voted labour (but did change my vote this time around), have lived in a very safe Tory seat (but now LibDem) for years. Totally accept we need a change.

If you voted labour or know a lot about politics, I'd be interested to know one thing you feel confident they can sort, do better on or bring in that will be beneficial. No arguments/criticisms of others please.

OP posts:

NHS

Nothing because the problems we have are global. I hope he will bring back initiative like sure start and the brown 250 for each child, lower uni fees and raise the tax threshold to benefit lower earners.
I hope he tackles the lack of ignorance around sen in school.
Unfortunately I think the problems we face need deeper and better thinking to tackle them and I've not got a single line during all the campaign to reassure me anything will change.
I don't think throwing money at the NHS will solve a single thing.
I don't think more teachers will do anything for education although of course it would help a little.
I think ordinary people will become increasingly disengaged and disenfranchised and lead to a possible reform victory in the next election.

Oh and I think it's going to be catastrophic time for women's rights.

They will sort increasing taxes so it won’t be worthwhile to strive to be promoted at work.

NHS

How?

Hedgehogsocks · 05/07/2024 11:22

NHS waiting times but not until 2025.

My colleagues are itching for their NMW wage increase. That’s what they voted for and they want it ASAP! £12-15PH (not my views. Just sharing what others really want!)

Kinsters · 05/07/2024 11:22

Maybe it's naive of me but I would hope that there would be a lot less corruption and scandal.

SaltyGod · 05/07/2024 11:24

I’m not a Labour voter.

So this is an interesting one, trying to think of something positive.

I very much hope that the most vulnerable in society are better looked after under this government. I also hope 16yr olds are able to vote in the future.

I don’t think they’ll fix the NHS as that needs wholesale structural reform, I can’t see education improving either. I suspect many will be worse off financially, I think that some might be shocked to see that they are going to be worse off. Labour will have to hit middle class incomes hard in order to pay for any plans.

I don’t mind paying more if the underlying issues were being solved but I fear it’s like pouring water into a leaking bucket.

Summermightbegreat · 05/07/2024 11:25

İ think they'll go through all the books etc and spend the summer exposing other things the Tories did, whilst not doing much, then make very small changes in the autumn budget and not much else in short periods of time.

Myblindsaredown · 05/07/2024 11:22

How?

You've confused me with a government minister. OP didn't say we personally had to have the answers, she asked what we were confident that labour would sort.

Have you heard of Nick Brown?

@BusyCM

fair enough. But why do you feel confident they'll improve the NHS

(they won't)

BorgQueen · 05/07/2024 11:29

I’m particularly looking forward to how the GB Energy scheme will work,
given that nearly all our Utility companies are now foreign owned 🙄
If they manage to acheive even one thing in their fantasy ‘list’ I’ll be bloody amazed.
Expect much jostling for position and trouble with activist groups/ unions, I can’t decide whether the TRA mob or the Free Palestine mob will be the biggest problem.

mrandmrsrobinson · 05/07/2024 11:29

Personally I'm not confident that they can sort anything out. Their ministers will be more moronic than the last lot.

Hedgehogsocks · 05/07/2024 11:29

Oh no! I felt optimistic for about 3 hours. It was nice while the naivety lasted

longdistanceclaraclara · 05/07/2024 11:30

I don't.

Squareplate · 05/07/2024 11:30

I vote for the cliche that is change, b8ut I fear its a poisoned chalice and they won't be able to achieve much short term because there's no money. (Which is also the reason the Tories didn't even try to win IMO).

I listened to an economist this week, who said whoever won, they needed to raise an additional £20bn in tax just to stand still, so we'll soon be hearing the narrative of Labout spending and tax increases.

There does seem to be confidence in Education that they'll sort out Ofsted, but I don't think they'll get the opportunity to make wide progress and the next election will come too soo .

4thJuly2024 · 05/07/2024 11:30

@Toomuch44

Nothing. Quite the opposite, which is why I didn't vote for them.

FundingitallHow · 05/07/2024 11:30

@Hedgehogsocks unfortunately they won't see much of a difference because the thresholds are low ie you will be a significant amount of tax on a low wage still. I know because I'm on it and it rose slightly but so did tax and ni.

So you just blindly believe they can do this? Wow.

kirinm · 05/07/2024 11:32

I don't see Starmer as being corrupt at all. That alone would amount to a massive change.

Taxes do need to rise if we want any working public services. I believe Labour want to improve the NHS and education. I didn't feel like that about the conservatives.

How much of this is possible in 5 years isn't clear at all.

I didn't realise this was a labour bashing thread. I'll move on. I thought it was just a discussion about what we thought. Especially if you re read the OPs last sentence.

I didn't vote for labour. I was just sharing my thoughts.

The issue is they promised not to do it and people can’t afford it, but I think we all know it’s coming where they say we didn’t want to but there is no money so you all need to dig deep. That and the 2030 target is going to have people really poor.
