One thing you're confident Labour can sort/change

Have to admit, I've never voted labour (but did change my vote this time around), have lived in a very safe Tory seat (but now LibDem) for years. Totally accept we need a change.

If you voted labour or know a lot about politics, I'd be interested to know one thing you feel confident they can sort, do better on or bring in that will be beneficial. No arguments/criticisms of others please.

Hopefully they discussed the proposal with the relevant staffing groups - aren't they always described as being 'in hock with the unions'? The unions approved the manifesto.

That doesn't create any more doctor hours though. If you've ever tried to find a junior doctor to cover a shift on a Friday afternoon when they're all already knackered, you'd understand. Taking to the BMA won't make any difference. The manifesto was deliberately vague...

Taxes are already high. Council tax is already high. They'll just charge more and more and more and STILL not be able to pay for all the things they've promised off the magical money tree.

This ^^

RelativePitch · 05/07/2024 11:48

I think they will spend a fortune on clearing the NHS waiting lists, overtime in the NHS, poaching doctors from all round the planet and using private hospitals. IIRC New Labour back in the day, even sent patients to France for things like hip operations to slash the waiting lists. People loved that, great hospital food in France!
They will have to borrow a lot to do it. We will have to pray for economic growth to cover the bill.

They're not though. Not in comparison to any of the European countries held up as examples of how public services should work.

@Myblindsaredown and you're incredibly rude and aggressive. Why are you picking at 1 poster like a school bully?

Comefromaway · 05/07/2024 11:50

An improvement in education including access to the arts and sport for all not just those who can afford and viable post 16 options for all not just the highly academic.

New Labour had money to spend though, they were elected in a rising economy. This time round will be very different because of the abject state things are in.

HowIrresponsible · 05/07/2024 11:53

Nothing. They have the capacity to make things fucking worse.

Ereyraa · 05/07/2024 11:56

Absolutely nothing.

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 05/07/2024 11:56

The only thing they might do to my (personal) benefit is increase civil service pay rises (union pressure) to bring them at least up to being in line with inflation.

But god knows where they would get the money from so chances are any pay rise will be eaten by tax increases anyway 😂

NHS

Hopefully, not to the Welsh model!

Mainats · 05/07/2024 11:57

I think they'll spectacularly fail to do anything about mass immigration and leave us just one election cycle away from a far right government. France has fucked around and found out.

RelativePitch · 05/07/2024 11:57

@Squareplate, you're absolutely right. But I fear they will be tempted to over borrow to tackle it.

Pudmyboy · 05/07/2024 11:58

Myblindsaredown · 05/07/2024 11:31

So you just blindly believe they can do this? Wow.

Don't think the poster blindly believes this, the OP asked a question and the poster answered that question

Justcallmebebes · 05/07/2024 11:57

Kier is on record saying Wales is the blueprint for the rest of the country....

Epidote · 05/07/2024 11:58

I think they are going to focus in the public sector. Schools, NHS and if posible create state owned energy company.

RedToothBrush · 05/07/2024 11:58

What is one thing you're confident Labour can sort/change?
The perception that Labour are amazing and will solve all the world's problems.
😂

(I wouldn't have the confidence that ANY party can definitely solve any issue atm, because there is a general lack of joined up political thinking thats shared by all the parties atm, because they focus on ideology rather than problem solving).

We already recruit doctors from all over the world, we already use private hospitals for waiting list initiatives, and I strongly doubt the capacity of burnt out doctors to do even more overtime than they already do. The French health system is starting to creak, for example a routine MRI which might have been done in a few weeks is now a several month wait. So there won't be capacity there.

I'm pleased labour got in - apart from the huge concerns around women's rights - but there's a lot of naivety on this thread regarding the NHS.

NHS

Absolutely. Can’t wait for reduced times in A&E, quicker appointments, better care. Just all round improvement.

Just like in Wales…

Toomuch44 · 05/07/2024 12:00

Wow, lots of replies already, thank you. About to go to work, but will read all later and take from them what I can.

Didn't sleep very well last night, but I know we need to move on and am hoping to grasp some positives/understanding.

ExpectoPatronums · 05/07/2024 12:01

I honestly can't think of anything that will be a quick and easy win for them. I think lots of the problems we have now were also problems when labour were last in, nothing was perfect then.
I hope they can make things better though.

equisetum · 05/07/2024 12:03

They will change our country for the worse. I think that's about it.

bozzabollix · 05/07/2024 12:03

Myblindsaredown · 05/07/2024 11:34

what things?

Where do I start? What isn’t messed up at the moment?

Social care for example needs taking care of because we’re right back into bed blocking crisis within hospitals, people have no halfway house on their road to recovery so hospital beds are needlessly taken. Sorting out the NHS strikes. Trying to establish a grown up relationship with our nearest trading partners in the EU which isn’t the playground sort that Boris Johnson et al messed up. Schools, roads, infrastructure, need I go on? Probably easier to name things that don’t require a degree of sorting out.

kirinm · 05/07/2024 12:04

@StarDolphins you mean just like when Labour were in power 14 years ago? When patient satisfaction was at its highest?

Iwasafool · 05/07/2024 12:04

I hope they will sit down with the junior doctors and come to a workable plan, obviously they can't just throw 35% at them but a plan that is acceptable and workable for both sides.
