I don't think it's mawkish at all @dontcallmelen.

We've had years of messy, factional politics - wasting our time and our money.

I have spent the day relieved but not jubilant.

But looking at the fuss free appointment of the Cabinet and the new independent appointments I feel uplifted.

There is an opportunity now for calm rational people thought and some long term vision involving people who are genuinely passionate about change.

That's a decent start.

Agree.

Appointing vallance is going to piss a lot of people off. Mostly conspiracy theorists. 😂

Good.

He had the patience of a saint when appearing alongside Mr Johnson in 2020. I would have said a few choice words had I been in his shoes.

I feel bad for Emily Thornberry. It doesn't look like she has a cabinet role?

Yes. I get that.

But I think given the recent stream of AG's it is really important that we have someone with slightly less of a party affiliation.

Oh I agree and I think its important to have "experts" in some roles. Just feel for ET that she didn't get a cabinet role.

The grown ups are back

It feels good, doesn’t it? It’ll take more than one parliament to fix everything the Tories trashed over the last 10 years but going in the right direction rather than carrying on in the wrong one is a start.

tobee · 05/07/2024 21:22

I wonder (maybe I presume) Emily Thornberry is a bit more "hard to handle" than some?

tobee · 05/07/2024 21:23

dontcallmelen · 05/07/2024 20:31

I’ve been a bit teary all day, not really sure I can verbalise without it sounding mawkish & slightly mad, I’m relieved more than happy at the result due partly I think because of the seats reform gained & the second places attained in quite a few constituencies the horrible scenes when Jess Phillips was declared the winner.
I dunno I had my youngest dgd today she was born a couple of days before the first lockdown in March 2020 she missed out on so much in those early years I want her to have as many opportunities as humanly possible to grow & be educated with children who aren’t in poverty enduring insecure housing health care that’s easily accessible & not surrounded by division or hate
when you look into a child’s eyes & you see the trust the love & innocence reflected back I just want this country to be a better place.
Apologies for the sentimental ramblings.

Nothing wrong with caring @dontcallmelen

I’d have twatted him more than once if I was Whitty or Vallance during those press conferences. 😂

Honestly, the number of times they gave clear info and Boris just waffled on and then contradicted what they said.

Just had a little tear in my eye at the end of the Channel 4 News as they recapped all the awfulness of the last 14 years and finished showing Keir Starmer going into Number 10. It made me realise how unsafe and uncertain things have felt, the grown ups are finally back in charge and the decisions being made are already confirming that.

The strict party discipline that has been imposed means that decisions can now be made for the good of the country not to appease bickering factions.

Everyone can keep saying the "grown ups are back in charge" and I definitely feel the relief that the Tory shitshow is over, but until the alleged "grown ups" can get their story truly straight on what a woman is, I'm reserving judgement slightly on their competence. It was a ridiculous issue to prevaricate in and risk votes over.

Really.
I had an 18 year old woman at my house yesterday telling me she couldn't vote Labour because of their anti-trans stance. Just because a position makes sense to you (and me incidentally) does not mean it does to everyone.
I think the fact both sides are not altogether happy with Labour's position shows its a compromise and therefore democratic.

Plus Party of Women (unequivocally TWANW) didn't keep their deposit in any seat showing its a niche issue, despite what MN says.

The fact that GC women mostly didn't go the single/issue voting route, doesn't mean it's a niche issue.

Fair. I really meant being GC ahead of anything else is niche.

I'm feeling oddly emotional, too
(Lack of sleep?)

My prediction some time ago (which was mocked, btw!) that deform would win 3/4 seats has sadly come to pass

The disgusting scrapings of the rotten tory barrel are still around (Jenrick, Patel etc) which is very depressing

I was speaking to some 18 year olds today who all voted green

I'd just like some...normality? Common sense and integrity would be good, too.

I look forward to the inevitable tory Civil War and pretty quick buyers regret in the deform seats. Caveat emptor!

Night night 🌙 all

No, well there's far too much else at stake (NHS for eg) for it to be the over-riding concern to me, but it is up there.

My 2 18/19 year olds voted green too! I'm happy they voted full stop.

Ahem. Not wishing to be the thread police, but don’t we have an agreement on this topic?

user8800 · 05/07/2024 23:47

Not a criticism @cassie

Just an observation

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/07/2024 23:55

Sam Freedman has calculated the number of Tories needed to force a VONC is 18. Plenty of room for them to continue the car crash in opposition.

OooooohhhhhJames Timpson OBE as Minister for Prisons, Parole and Probation - very good.

That I think is an inspired appointment. Probably the person who has done the most for prisoner rehabilitation in the last 20 years.
