I have recommended it before, but Rory Stewart’s book “Politics At The Edge” is excellent and very interesting on his time as Prisons Minister.

theonewiththeToryMP · 06/07/2024 09:43

As I have said before on this thread ,I think, females (and tbh many of the males) commit crimes of poverty. The most commonly prosecuted female crime is shoplifting. A woman is also more likely to be prosecuted for shoplifting and meter fiddling than an equivalent man. So many women (and quite a lot of men) are locked up for things that therapeutic practices and otehr interventions would prevent. Rates of recidivism are huge (presumably because the underlying issues have not been addressed at all) , too, so locking them up achieves nothing.

Jimmy McGovern and Ken Loach have both looked with huge compassion at these issues.

theonewiththeToryMP · 06/07/2024 09:46

It is indeed the one bit of Rory's book where he appears genuinely sincere. The bit about books in prisons was really interesting.

user8800 · 06/07/2024 09:52

Women are often sent to prison for offences that men would not be
Judges (who are mostly white privileged men) send more women to prison for 1st offences than men

TaraTories · 06/07/2024 09:53

@Evenstar it's on my audible list, might bump it up. I wonder how he is feeling with the changes? I wasn't impressed with him on election night as he was brushing off LD policies whilst bemoaning no one was talking about EU and social care (!) but I think he will be happy with the changes so far. I always mean to listen to the podcast he does too. He is the only Tory in recent years I have had any time for.

I also think a lot of the issues in prisons and lead to imprisonment are drug related. I suspect huge increases in steroid abuse over the last 15 years - clear when driving alongside the widespread of misogyny IMO - drives a lot of violent crime and road related accidents. More awareness of the effects should be widespread. I think it is tied in with social media and incel groups.

Evenstar · 06/07/2024 09:55

@Notonthestairs that was very interesting from James Timpson on the attitude to punishment in this country, it’s a huge problem.

A family member of mine volunteers with the Independent Monitoring Board and I think would agree with Timpson’s breakdown of who should and shouldn’t be in prison. When you meet prisoners I think it gives you a very different perspective on it all, but politicians are afraid of being seen as “soft on crime”

I’m an ardent listener to their podcast The Rest is Politics and would recommend it to anyone.

Igotjelly · 06/07/2024 10:01

Their TRIP Leading series is excellent too, where they interview a range of really high profile figures (including recently Nancy Palosi, David Blunkett, Angela Raynor and Nadhim Zahawi).

Evenstar · 06/07/2024 10:02

He and Alastair Campbell did a very good “emergency” episode of The Rest Is Politics on Joe Biden’s performance at the Presidential debate, definitely worth a listen. I am going to try to listen regularly from now on.

Cheguevarahamster · 06/07/2024 10:04

Really interesting discussion about prisons. I would recommend Chris Atkins book "Abit if a Stretch" about his time in prison for fraud. It's eye opening.

What does everyone think about restarting the thread at 1 for the new government. Could be 1) Starmer: A new hope.
Please tread lightly on our dreams.

Their sister podcast The Rest is Politics US is excellent too with Katty Kay and Anthony Scaramucci.

@Notonthestairs I agree with every word of that and with the rise of Reform it’s essential that the Tories provide a moderate right wing alternative, they mustn’t appoint a far right leader or lurch further into extremism

Exactly. His point that they lost more seats to the Lib Dems than Reform is an essential one for them to consider.

Oh I agree and I think its important to have "experts" in some roles. Just feel for ET that she didn't get a cabinet role.

I’m sure she already knew. I don’t imagine he planned this yesterday. He’ll have had this discussion with her weeks (if not months) ago. There’ll be a plan for her I’m sure.

DuncinToffee · 06/07/2024 10:10

I wasn't familiar with James Timpson but with Starmer already stating a few days ago that they would have to continue with the early releasement of prisoners, he does seem like a very astute appointment.

In unrelated news, certain posters seem much quieter now on other threads.

It's like the end of an era.

I could cut and paste a link to show you what I mean

Anybody seen anything from clav

I'm here - but I'm catching a flight later today (family holiday) so busy getting things organised for that. Have fun - I intend to.

😂😂This poster has passed me by.

This won't happen immediately but I'd like to see some movement towards this please -

The Liberal Democrats plan to use their best-ever contingent of 71 MPs to push Keir Starmer to begin cross-party talks on a new plan for social care, saying the issue was raised repeatedly by voters during their election campaign.

That title sounds good to me

Happy to start the new thread

Good morning. I slept so well last night and my tummy is no longer in knots.

Loving the cabinet decisions, based on ability and experience - such a novel thing after the last 6 years in particular!

I'm worried about the threat from the far right, but have hope creeping in and overall just a feeling of massive relief.

End of an era...

Evenstar · 06/07/2024 10:24

@DuncinToffee I wasn’t familiar with James specifically, but knew the work that the business had done with ex-offenders and generally that as a family they raised awareness of adoption, fostering and care leavers. His parents fostered many children. I believe care leavers are also a group disproportionately represented in the prison population.

They are/were Tory, but in the sense of being One Nation philanthropic Tories, this is their charity https://www.timpson-group.co.uk/alex-timpson-trust/
