Cabinet looks to be shaping up well & not having people in post that have to borrow the only available brain cell between them will be a definite bonus.

Notonthestairs · 05/07/2024 19:45

@Evenstar - yes I'm actually pretty excited by those appointments and Richard Hermer KC as AG. (From Matrix Chambers I think).

Good to have an independent AG.

We haven't had a decent one in ages.

Shame for Thornberry but it's not like there isn't enough work to go round.

Notonthestairs · 05/07/2024 19:47

Haven't had a decent thoughtful AG since Grieve IMO. You need someone capable of sensible independent robust thought. Braverman was a low point.

Notonthestairs · 05/07/2024 19:49

Or as the Secret Barrister has put it -

An Attorney General who is a genuine heavyweight silk with decades of experience in domestic and international public law? Somebody chosen on the basis of legal acumen and merit rather than their willingness to tell the Prime Minister whatever he wants to hear?

Well I never.

Talking of Thornberry, has she got a job?

Notonthestairs · 05/07/2024 20:01

Not that I can see.

Evenstar · 05/07/2024 20:01

Just had a little tear in my eye at the end of the Channel 4 News as they recapped all the awfulness of the last 14 years and finished showing Keir Starmer going into Number 10. It made me realise how unsafe and uncertain things have felt, the grown ups are finally back in charge and the decisions being made are already confirming that.

The strict party discipline that has been imposed means that decisions can now be made for the good of the country not to appease bickering factions.

pointythings · 05/07/2024 20:03

Hilariously enough on other parts of MN the grapes are very sour.

Notonthestairs · 05/07/2024 20:13

I felt the same @Evenstar.

Genuinely happy by the choice of AG - a bloody great signal that they take the independence of our laws & procedures seriously, the position was never supposed to be a means to bend laws to short term political advantage.

Never thought I'd link to a thread from Eric Pickles but I hope - against all evidence to the contrary- that the Conservatives look at his message (definitely points 7,8 & 10) and think again.

Appointing vallance is going to piss a lot of people off. Mostly conspiracy theorists. 😂

TimeForRishiByeByes · 05/07/2024 20:21

I feel for Emily Thornberry but I have to admit I am very impressed by his decision to appoint a KC.

Notonthestairs · 05/07/2024 20:23

Now they need to get Parliament moving. Extend the term, get the legislative agenda moving asap.

Igotjelly · 05/07/2024 20:24

James Timpson (of Timpsons shoes repairs) into the Prisons Minister role is a great one. The company have done loads of great work with ex-offenders.

DuncinToffee · 05/07/2024 20:26

The grown ups are back

Evenstar · 05/07/2024 20:27

@Notonthestairs I agree with every word of that and with the rise of Reform it’s essential that the Tories provide a moderate right wing alternative, they mustn’t appoint a far right leader or lurch further into extremism

DuncinToffee · 05/07/2024 20:27

Wes Streeting: “I have just spoken over the phone with the BMA junior doctors committee, and I can announce that talks to end their industrial action will begin next week.”

dontcallmelen · 05/07/2024 20:31

I’ve been a bit teary all day, not really sure I can verbalise without it sounding mawkish & slightly mad, I’m relieved more than happy at the result due partly I think because of the seats reform gained & the second places attained in quite a few constituencies the horrible scenes when Jess Phillips was declared the winner.
I dunno I had my youngest dgd today she was born a couple of days before the first lockdown in March 2020 she missed out on so much in those early years I want her to have as many opportunities as humanly possible to grow & be educated with children who aren’t in poverty enduring insecure housing health care that’s easily accessible & not surrounded by division or hate
when you look into a child’s eyes & you see the trust the love & innocence reflected back I just want this country to be a better place.
Apologies for the sentimental ramblings.

That is how I feel too Flowers

DuncinToffee · 05/07/2024 18:30

Oh joy Confused

At least five Tory MPs are expected to launch leadership bids now Rishi Sunak has announced his resignation,

The Telegraph understands Suella Braverman, Kemi Badenoch, Priti Patel, Robert Jenrick, Tom Tugendhat are all being tipped to run

If the Tory's have learned anything only 1 of those candidates would stand a chance at a GE IMo.

Notonthestairs · 05/07/2024 20:45

I don't think it's mawkish at all @dontcallmelen.

We've had years of messy, factional politics - wasting our time and our money.

I have spent the day relieved but not jubilant.

But looking at the fuss free appointment of the Cabinet and the new independent appointments I feel uplifted.

There is an opportunity now for calm rational people thought and some long term vision involving people who are genuinely passionate about change.

That's a decent start.

Notonthestairs · 05/07/2024 20:52

Ok that was word salad - I should have read it before posting!

I feel bad for Emily Thornberry. It doesn't look like she has a cabinet role?
