Good morning all, I went to bed at 7.30! I was so tired.

I am thrilled by the cabinet appointments. As Ian Dunt says "inject these cabinet posts into my veins"

I felt the same @Evenstar.

Genuinely happy by the choice of AG - a bloody great signal that they take the independence of our laws & procedures seriously, the position was never supposed to be a means to bend laws to short term political advantage.

Never thought I'd link to a thread from Eric Pickles but I hope - against all evidence to the contrary- that the Conservatives look at his message (definitely points 7,8 & 10) and think again.

Goodness I hadn't realised that Eric Pickles was so astute.
I doubt the right wing will listen to him though.

Everyone can keep saying the "grown ups are back in charge" and I definitely feel the relief that the Tory shitshow is over, but until the alleged "grown ups" can get their story truly straight on what a woman is, I'm reserving judgement slightly on their competence. It was a ridiculous issue to prevaricate in and risk votes over.

I think you are being unfair. Starmer has been very clear that he believes in the rule of law and he is clear about what the law says in this area.
I would say that was a fine example of being grown-up, unlike his predecessor who was quite happy to break the law, even laws that the government he was in had introduced.

That I think is an inspired appointment. Probably the person who has done the most for prisoner rehabilitation in the last 20 years.

Is that actually all him, or is it also his Tory father? Or both?

I get a bit confused but think Tampons Sr was a Tory donor for quite Soem time and Timpson Jr is Labour.

Must toddle away and look them up.

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/07/2024 07:39

Tampons Snr? 😂

theonewiththeToryMP · 06/07/2024 07:40

Ah, OK - John Timpson - papa is the founder. He supported Brexit and was a Tory donor but also fostered over 90 children!

James Timpson - Labour leaning current CEO and in charge of all the current Timpsons ideas

Edward Timpson - brother Tory MP

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/07/2024 07:39

Hahahahahah whoops!!

Zonder · 06/07/2024 08:25

Funny how I'm getting far fewer notifications for threads I'm on now 😂

Just watched Jess P acceptance speech. How awful. I leafleted for our local Labour party and it didn't cross my mind I could get shouted at or have my tyres slashed.

pointythings · 06/07/2024 08:33

I hope the speed at which our threads fill will be inversely proportional to the competence of our new government.

Our next thread needs to be the first Starmer thread! May I suggest: Starmer: Get the big shovel and good luck!

It is. He’s a very good man.

I wept when Starmer went into Downing Street yesterday @dontcallmelen. I really didn’t expect to be so emotional. I was expecting relief, the joy has surprised me.

I think the Cabinet looks really strong.

IClaudine · 06/07/2024 08:39

It feels so great, knowing that serious people are now in charge. The appointments Starmer is making are very wise.

Vallance will be red meat to the anti-vax Reformites, though. I bet twitter is full of posts about WEF/WHO etc. Will probably start here too. There are already Reform bots scuttling about, bemoaning FPTP.

NoDishiForRishi · 06/07/2024 08:48

Morning all! I finally crashed out at about 10pm last night, I really needed that 😂

Catching up on everything this morning, loving the look of the new cabinet, Timpson in particular is an inspired appointment.

Right! I've given the child an iPad so I can get myself going and I'm to do some jobs while listening to Electoral Dysfunction! I bloody love Jess Phillips, that count footage was shocking!

SerendipityJane · 06/07/2024 09:12

Totally bowled over by The Timpson appointment. Wasn't something I had anywhere on my radar. A very clear signal of direction.

If I learned one thing Thursday night it's that the plan is to under promise and over deliver. However sensible ministers in charge of boring workaday departments must surely be cheaper than the totally unsuitable lumbering beasts that have stalked Whitehall in the chumocracy days ? That's somewhere I'd look to find some surprise cash.

Also great news about new AG and Rwanda. Two very clear signals that we're back to the rule of law both domestically and internationally. And with Rwanda that's already a line crossed off the "to do" list.

Notonthestairs · 06/07/2024 09:17

Great interview here with James Timpson and Krishnan Guru Murthy.

Some really interesting things to say - and made a reference to women in prisons I'm very piqued by (essentially that most of them shouldn't be in prison).

TaraTories · 06/07/2024 09:24

It seems like such a common sense viewpoint, it amazes me it has taken us this long to realise this officially. We've had documentaries on female prisons and the mental health crisis in prisons for decades! Evidence shows women tend to have MH issues and are non violent once these are treated/medicated. Only locking up violent and sexual offenders would be an amazing start. Another thing that might be triggering for the authoritarian Reform/Tory voters though.

Evenstar · 06/07/2024 09:25

I think I am happier today than yesterday, seeing people like Biden, Justin Trudeau and Ursula Von der Leyen sending the message that they have had cordial conversations with Keir Starmer and look forward to working together. Since BREXIT we have turned inwards and it is not healthy.

I think things are going to be done very differently now, seeing people like Chris Packham saying they are looking forward to working with new ministers who have expert knowledge themselves. There is hope at last.

This is very good from Andrew Marr https://x.com/implausibleblog/status/1809337490039603463?s=61&t=xKCXjKa1-S6Ks0nSd_LXGg

Already seen a few posts about Vallance.

Not be confused with Holly.

Edited

There is probably a shed load of money to be saved there too.

Locking people up is fucking expensive. Just a simple single digit %age reduction could free up millions to be spent elsewhere.

I am beginning to suspect (by it's absence from debate) that some saving shave been quietly identified for some quick wins. If I wanted to "under promise and over deliver" (did anyone catch the fleeting reference to that on Thursday ?) then that's where I would start. With money I already had.

I think that's a very fair assessment from Andrew Marr.

A recent study showed that 80% of the female prison population had undx brain trauma as seen on mri imaging

I've seen enough American Netflix documentaries about their social care systems for children clearly feed into their prison systems to understand how profitable it can be for a select few "security" type companies. It's a government mandated cash cow based on poverty and the majority of citizens being happy to look the other way, essentially feeding into their fear that they need protecting. Glad we appear to be closing the door on that option.

Brain trauma and offending is really interesting. I do wonder if one day they will use it a way to predict likelihood of offending and do preventative therapies.

Morning all Brew

I really enjoyed the election night thread on here, thanks all!

Now, I am enjoying the calm.
