Staying up all night? What’s your plan?

I am planning to stay up all night tonight. Well, I’ll probably decide after I’ve seen the exit polls at 10. The BBC have some suggestions for the best way to stay awake:

  1. embrace the multi-nap strategy - first one at 21:00 tonight, in time for the 22:00 exit poll, then at 02:00, 06:00 and 14:00 on Friday
  2. but limit naps to between 20-30 minutes and "pre-load" with a caffeine hit just before you sleep
  3. keep hydrated with water but avoid sugar-packed energy drinks and alcohol
  4. keep all the lights on overnight
  5. snack on protein drinks or unsalted nuts (sorry, no chocolate)
Does anyone else have a plan? Eg. When are the first results likely? What would be the best times to nap?

@DontBiteTheCat This isn't the X Factor! Unless you work in Politics or Government then finding it "exciting" is just plain odd....

Well no, I think X Factor is dire.

Some people stay up all night to watch the Super Bowl. Others to watch an election.

What is confusing about people finding different things interesting?

I booked the day off!

Some idiot put a meeting in my diary for 9.30 a.m. I've firmly told all concerned not to be silly and moved it to Monday.

@MrsLeonFarrell Oh yeah I'll be checking it when I wake up, out of curiosity and if I wake up for a wee at 5am I'll click onto SkyNews. It's the 'Off to bed now so I can wake up for the fun' brigade I find baffling.

me too.

Staying up late enough for Miriam Cates to lose her seat, and having a whisky when she does

Me too hopefully!!! Vile woman and useless M.P. Only interested in herself

Onthegrid · 04/07/2024 20:32

On of the few benefits of menopause is needing less sleep and waking through the night. I’ll do exit polls and probably sleep at 11 then I’ll wake around 2 to see what’s been happening and then just dose in bed as needed. I have a TV, MacBook, iPad and phone to cover as many channels as I fancy.
I often do this for sports events.
Another plus is that I don’t work on Fridays and whilst I have stuff to do I am not on the clock so can suit myself.
I don’t need caffeine or food overnight just water and then maybe a coffee at dawn.

TheChosenTwo · 04/07/2024 20:32

And I’m really excited to see the most immoral privileged smug self serving cunts slung out of their seats.
You couldn’t pay me to watch the x-factor or love island, THIS is exactly the kind of reality tv I’m in to.
I don’t expect anyone else to be as excited as me, my girls will stay up for as long as they want, ds is going to bed before, (he’s 12, he doesn’t get much of a choice 😂) and dh will most certainly be going to bed.
I wouldn’t set my alarm to watch a sports match in the middle of the night like dh does, I don’t care about it. He doesn’t really get why I stay up for this. But he doesn’t express a need to know why I do!

Hurrayelectionday · 04/07/2024 20:33

I was remembering 1997 - finishing uni and I worked in a pub where the local Labour Party met and planned - and got their candidate elected. They used to drink half and half pints - half ale, half water! 😀

This feels like a very different moment- life feels very somber these days for so many. It’s very exciting to know there is change afoot.

After all the years fucking around Labour are finally in an electable position. Not perfect but for me such a welcome change anyway.

I don't understand the need to stay up all night? Just go to bed and you'll find out when you wake up

Maybe this isn't the thread for you Grin

I'm planning a couple of hours kip between 12 and 2, then coffee! Booked tomorrow as annual leave.

Like the idea of a whiskey when JRM et al lose - have to make do with gin though. Cheers!

@EnglishBluebell I am with Pam from Gavin and Stacey on this one. ‘It’s all the drama, I just love it’

WHY would anybody stay up all night, in order to watch a flipping Election?!?** Of course I realise that there's people for whom this is more important to than me, but.....Enough so to stay up all night, though?

**Those who work in Politics/Government etc notwithstanding of course.

It's not exactly exciting, is it?!

It's better than sport!

I'd stay up for the Olympics, too.

It's interesting watching each seat come through. I'll be messaging all my friends who will also be watching.

Onthegrid · 04/07/2024 20:36

And to add I’ll probably be posting on here too

Droolylabradors · 04/07/2024 20:37

Those who say they can watch the repeats tomorrow - it's not the same at all!

I was in halls of residence in my bedroom and saw portillo go. Fucking marvellous stuff.

I found it just as exciting watching Brown lose.

It's about the tension and the stakes involved that are so high.

BigHoops · 04/07/2024 20:37

Well, I'm on holiday and have the most painful sunburn...plus our apartment neighbours are having a noisy gathering so I think these things will at least conspire to keep me going till the exit polls and quite a bit beyond!

Get some natural yoghurt for the burn if you can.

If you’re in a resort or AI the restaurant should have some.

No one would stay up all night for the X Factor Confused it is on in the 'watch anything if you're not out' slot it is cheap telly

tobee · 04/07/2024 20:40

Just tucked up in bed when I saw this thread. Little power nap hopefully

Exactly.
The season finale of The Torys. 😀

NashvilleQueen · 04/07/2024 20:41

Democracy IS exciting.

I want to watch it live like any other huge event. It's like saying why watch sport when the results are online the next day.

BigHoops · 04/07/2024 20:47

Gosh @DontBiteTheCat that's freaky - at the exact moment I saw your reply I overheard our neighbour recommending yoghurt as a remedy to my husband!! Thank you, definitely worth a try...might eat some too to keep me going if in line with the Beeb's recommendations 😂

BurntBroccoli · 04/07/2024 20:49

Booked tomorrow off so will stay up as late as I can. Was up at 5.50 am this morning tho so not expecting it to be too late!
Excited!

Dweebie · 04/07/2024 20:49

For me it’s really exciting. I will never forget 1997. Planning to stay up as tonight as long as I can with a potential nap 11-2

Truckeme · 04/07/2024 20:52

Bed shortly. Up at 3-30 for work so will be interesting to see where we are then

SecretSoul · 04/07/2024 20:54

I love this thread!!! I honestly thought it was just me that gets excited at the prospect of watching the votes unroll through the night. You guys are my tribe, clearly.

Election Night is something I look forward to with unbridled enthusiasm!

I also love Eurovision, the Olympics, and quite a few sports. Catching the results later for any of these things is just not the same as experiencing it live - just like the election results.

DP knows how much I love watching the results come in and is going to sit up with me for as long as he can.

I'm self employed so I have lots of flexibility. Due to tricky home circumstances, I'm usually up until 4-5am anyway. Annoyingly this morning my DM woke us really early for no reason at all, and then I couldn't get back to sleep so I'm bloody knackered!! We've got builders in so I've had very little sleep in the last week. I'm perennially sleep-deprived but usually manage well - but today of all days I'm absolutely shattered!!

I will power through. I'm not missing tonight for anything!

Iliketulips · 04/07/2024 20:55

Will probably stay up to see the result of the first contested seat come in. I usually wake up a few times in the night and go to the toilet at some stage, so will check my phone then. Our local result normally comes in 6-7am, so normally get up around then to see that, but it's forecast for 5am!
