Staying up all night? What’s your plan?

JawJaw · 04/07/2024 19:10

I am planning to stay up all night tonight. Well, I’ll probably decide after I’ve seen the exit polls at 10. The BBC have some suggestions for the best way to stay awake:

  1. embrace the multi-nap strategy - first one at 21:00 tonight, in time for the 22:00 exit poll, then at 02:00, 06:00 and 14:00 on Friday
  2. but limit naps to between 20-30 minutes and "pre-load" with a caffeine hit just before you sleep
  3. keep hydrated with water but avoid sugar-packed energy drinks and alcohol
  4. keep all the lights on overnight
  5. snack on protein drinks or unsalted nuts (sorry, no chocolate)
Does anyone else have a plan? Eg. When are the first results likely? What would be the best times to nap?

@DontBiteTheCat This isn't the X Factor! Unless you work in Politics or Government then finding it "exciting" is just plain odd....

MerryMarys · 04/07/2024 20:15

I don't understand the need to stay up all night? Just go to bed and you'll find out when you wake up

I don't get it either Confused

Talisin · 04/07/2024 20:16

@EnglishBluebell Because I want to see the Tories humiliation and suffering in real time and I luckily happen to be on leave so I can.

EnglishBluebell · 04/07/2024 20:17

@MrsLeonFarrell Oh yeah I'll be checking it when I wake up, out of curiosity and if I wake up for a wee at 5am I'll click onto SkyNews. It's the 'Off to bed now so I can wake up for the fun' brigade I find baffling.

HansHolbein · 04/07/2024 20:18

Sadly I have to work tomorrow. I’ll stay up and watch the exit polls. Probably doze on the sofa. Next time I will make sure I book the next day off.

Shitmum2024 · 04/07/2024 20:18

I will put the TV on when I go to bed . Fall asleep with it on. And have a glance at it when I wake through out the night .

When do we get the actual results?

HansHolbein · 04/07/2024 20:19

Yes, is there an ‘official’ announcement time?

ConcernedOfClapham · 04/07/2024 20:20

What’s with all the cheese?

Am planning to stay up, but cheese supplies are low. Should I rush out to replenish???!!!???

@DontBiteTheCat Love, I don't need you to pontificate tell me what the Tories have done wrong! I'm well bloody aware thank you very much. That wasn't anything close to my point.

Hun, I was replying to your question asking why people stay up and responding to your opinion that it wasn’t “exciting”.

What part of my direct response to the question you asked was difficult to understand?

BirthdayRainbow · 04/07/2024 20:22

I had a half hour nap this afternoon. Just having half a glass of wine. No idea how long I'll last. Just want to try as I've never been allowed to stay up before but I feel like I'd like to be part of it all this time.

Plus my kids are vote counting and I'm hoping they might message me.

WHY would anybody stay up all night, in order to watch a flipping Election?!?** Of course I realise that there's people for whom this is more important to than me, but.....Enough so to stay up all night, though?

**Those who work in Politics/Government etc notwithstanding of course.

It's not exactly exciting, is it?!

It will be brilliant I hope.
1997 was a night of joy

In your opinion you mean?

Do you have a list of things that other people are allowed to find exciting?

Tutorpuzzle · 04/07/2024 20:23

Couldn’t agree more @Talisin . This absolutely is an exciting one and going by the hordes scooping up the snacks (and wine!) in the supermarket on my way home from work I think, @EnglishBluebell , you are probably in a minority. 😊

Lots of us find the xfactor dull as fuck but love watching a Tory lose their job.

I'm struggling to sleep atm, thanks menopause only got a couple of hours last night. Hopefully, the coverage will send me off nicely tonight. 😂

Yes it is very exciting. David Dimbely was on newscast talking about it yesterday, a heady mixture of suspense, analysis and social observations. Honestly what's not to love ?

Everysand · 04/07/2024 20:25

I generally watch it in the morning, the highlights will be on then.

MonsteraMama · 04/07/2024 20:26

I'm going to play the Sims. Nothing better to keep me up till the wee hours, won't even need coffee.

Droolylabradors · 04/07/2024 20:27

It is SO exciting! Regardless of who wins. Best one was spending a weekend in 2010 watching them try to put together a coalition.

I love it so much, I have a politics alevel and a politics degree. 😁

going to bed at usual time, getting up at usual time. Knowing early changes nothing.

ChimneyPot · 04/07/2024 20:30

I was l

The Portillo moment in 1997 was at 3am and I was awake for that. I hope to stay awake at least as long this time jut would like to be awake at 4.30am if it looks like ReesMogg might go.

Also I was living in California in 2000 and went to bed after the networks called Florida for Gore and it looked like he had won. I woke up to weeks of hanging chads and George W so I don’t like to sleep until the result is known.

As for it not being exciting unlike the X factor!!!!! This actually impacts real lives.

It will be shown ad nauseam if anyone well known loses their seat like it was with Portillo and Balls
