Staying up all night? What’s your plan?

I am planning to stay up all night tonight. Well, I’ll probably decide after I’ve seen the exit polls at 10. The BBC have some suggestions for the best way to stay awake:

  1. embrace the multi-nap strategy - first one at 21:00 tonight, in time for the 22:00 exit poll, then at 02:00, 06:00 and 14:00 on Friday
  2. but limit naps to between 20-30 minutes and "pre-load" with a caffeine hit just before you sleep
  3. keep hydrated with water but avoid sugar-packed energy drinks and alcohol
  4. keep all the lights on overnight
  5. snack on protein drinks or unsalted nuts (sorry, no chocolate)
Does anyone else have a plan? Eg. When are the first results likely? What would be the best times to nap?

Sorry for being thick here, but what is the exit pol?

You’re not being thick!

So in around 140 polling stations, voters are asked to fill in another ballot giving the same vote as their “real” vote. Those votes are then counted, and give an early indication of who will win.

They are usually very accurate. Except for Brexit but we don’t talk about that.

Some people have to get up for work!

DontBiteTheCat · 04/07/2024 20:00

In answer to the OP, I’ll be watching the exit polls and setting an alarm for 3am to watch the results come in! There’ll be a few announced before then, but 3am onwards should be very interesting!

Teachers can’t !@DontBiteTheCat but I will be so glad to wake up to Labour! Education needs an overhaul.

I don’t think there’s a specific time, but I could be wrong.

It’s whoever counts and announces first.

EnglishBluebell · 04/07/2024 20:07

WHY would anybody stay up all night, in order to watch a flipping Election?!?** Of course I realise that there's people for whom this is more important to than me, but.....Enough so to stay up all night, though?

**Those who work in Politics/Government etc notwithstanding of course.

It's not exactly exciting, is it?!

StJulian2023 · 04/07/2024 20:07

Is it possible to predict when results will come in when constituency boundaries have changed? Guessing probably not. It’s going to be super close between Tories and Lib Dems where I am

HarrietTheSpyglass · 04/07/2024 20:08

The results will all be there in the morning folks…

Sleeping now as exhausted. Alarm set for 230, will join dd who says she’s doing an all nighter. Dh and dd at shops now sorting breakfast treats.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

FeatherBoas · 04/07/2024 20:09

Don't bother it's a foregone conclusion, just look in the morning.

reallifeboogie · 04/07/2024 20:09

I don't understand the need to stay up all night? Just go to bed and you'll find out when you wake up

bonzaitree · 04/07/2024 20:10

I have a ton of work to do, so I’ll be multitasking throughout the night with some snacks. The OH is nearly falling asleep on the sofa as we speak so I think it will just be me and the dog.

Exciting!!!

soundsys · 04/07/2024 20:10

We're ignoring the advice and drinking and eating cheese 🤣 we've got some friends coming just in time for the exit polls and Lorna my will start with cheese and wine/beer, then we have some gin/whiskey for later and some fizz chilling 🤣

I do also have lots of coffee, tea and chocolate options for when we're flagging.

My eldest has set her alarm for 2.30 which is probably much more sensible! (But she has school tomorrow and I have taken the day off work)

Exactly! 🤣

Some people seem to treat it like it's some sort of fun national 'event' like a Royal Wedding meets Reality tv 🙄

It is exciting, to me at least!

We’re on the cusp of huge change, we’re about to see the most incompetent, disgusting government lose on a bigger scale than ever before. People have died under the Tories, they have absolutely decimated public services, the most vulnerable members of society are barely surviving. I cannot explain my hatred for them so yes, I’m excited!

reallifeboogie · 04/07/2024 20:12

Also, as somebody who works a mix of days and nights, the bbc advice for napping etc is the funniest thing ever.

ExitPursuedByABare · 04/07/2024 20:13

Wine. Cheese. Chocolate peanuts. Stay awake as long as possible.

EnglishBluebell · 04/07/2024 20:13

@DontBiteTheCat Love, I don't need you to pontificate tell me what the Tories have done wrong! I'm well bloody aware thank you very much. That wasn't anything close to my point.

I can't speak for anyone else but the reason I will probably have an earbud in listening to the radio coverage most of the night is because I can't actually get to sleep until I know the likely result.

It's really annoying, for me and the rest of my family who don't care and go to bed, but I decided a few years ago that it was easier to plan to stay up rather than be frustrated I couldn't sleep. I usually doze and then give up around 3 am.

toomanycushionshere · 04/07/2024 20:15

Not sure how accurate this is, but it gives an idea of when the most exciting bits might be…

I'm exhausted just reading that!

I will be seeing the exit poll at 10pm, then watching the coverage while trying to keep awake, until about 11pm. Then sleeping until inevitably my bladder wakes me up in the small hours, at which point I will check in. Then I will sleep until either the birds wake me up about 5pm, or my alarm at 6am, and will see the result then.
