Staying up all night? What’s your plan?

JawJaw · 04/07/2024 19:10

I am planning to stay up all night tonight. Well, I’ll probably decide after I’ve seen the exit polls at 10. The BBC have some suggestions for the best way to stay awake:

  1. embrace the multi-nap strategy - first one at 21:00 tonight, in time for the 22:00 exit poll, then at 02:00, 06:00 and 14:00 on Friday
  2. but limit naps to between 20-30 minutes and "pre-load" with a caffeine hit just before you sleep
  3. keep hydrated with water but avoid sugar-packed energy drinks and alcohol
  4. keep all the lights on overnight
  5. snack on protein drinks or unsalted nuts (sorry, no chocolate)
Does anyone else have a plan? Eg. When are the first results likely? What would be the best times to nap?

I love this thread!!! I honestly thought it was just me that gets excited at the prospect of watching the votes unroll through the night. You guys are my tribe, clearly.

Election Night is something I look forward to with unbridled enthusiasm!

I also love Eurovision, the Olympics, and quite a few sports. Catching the results later for any of these things is just not the same as experiencing it live - just like the election results.

DP knows how much I love watching the results come in and is going to sit up with me for as long as he can.

I'm self employed so I have lots of flexibility. Due to tricky home circumstances, I'm usually up until 4-5am anyway. Annoyingly this morning my DM woke us really early for no reason at all, and then I couldn't get back to sleep so I'm bloody knackered!! We've got builders in so I've had very little sleep in the last week. I'm perennially sleep-deprived but usually manage well - but today of all days I'm absolutely shattered!!

I will power through. I'm not missing tonight for anything!

You are my kind of person!

My dream result tonight would be Labour in power with Lib Dems as opposition.

Kayemm · 04/07/2024 20:57

I'm considering Espresso Martinis 🍸

DiscoBeat · 04/07/2024 20:58

Having a very early sleep then waking up to watch it at around 1 onwards. Will probably go back to bed for a bit after the school run tomorrow!

Oh yes, to see Truss go would be a wonderful thing.

I feel like we've all earned that moment after what she put us through!

It is exciting, to me at least!

We’re on the cusp of huge change, we’re about to see the most incompetent, disgusting government lose on a bigger scale than ever before. People have died under the Tories, they have absolutely decimated public services, the most vulnerable members of society are barely surviving. I cannot explain my hatred for them so yes, I’m excited!

I'm with you on that one!

MotherofPearl · 04/07/2024 21:03

I have a lovely bottle of cremant chilling in the fridge, and spent a small fortune today in our local deli buying some delicious cheeses, crackers, olives and chutneys. I'm going to set it all out shortly before the exit poll, but save the cremant until I'm more confident that Labour have won. Also bought a box of chocolate truffles to keep us going.

I've booked tomorrow off work to recover. Grin

WHY would anybody stay up all night, in order to watch a flipping Election?!?** Of course I realise that there's people for whom this is more important to than me, but.....Enough so to stay up all night, though?

**Those who work in Politics/Government etc notwithstanding of course.

It's not exactly exciting, is it?!

@EnglishBluebell

the same old reply. Different people enjoy different things. People will be watching it for different reasons some peoples jobs will be affected immediately, some people want to see specific MP's lose their seats, some be )deluded) people think having a Labour government is going to bring unicorns & some of us just enjoy watching it unfold and all the drama, predictions & mathematical calculations. 🤷🏻‍♀️

HarrietTheSpyglass · 04/07/2024 20:08

The results will all be there in the morning folks…

@HarrietTheSpyglass

do you not watch any sport either?

reallifeboogie · 04/07/2024 20:09

I don't understand the need to stay up all night? Just go to bed and you'll find out when you wake up

@reallifeboogie

i don't want 'to find out in the morning'

i want to watch it unfolding & the reactions.

piscofrisco · 04/07/2024 21:10

I have to be up for work at 5.30 so I'm going to bed after the 10 pm exit poll but setting the alarm for 3 at which point I intend to get up and watch the results come on while dosing on the sofa until it's time to get ready for work.

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 04/07/2024 21:11

As a child, my Dad always stayed up to watch election results and I never understood it. At Uni, in 1997, I had started seeing a guy and he and his friends were planning an all night viewing and so I went along to impress him. I loved it! I think I only saw him for another couple of weeks but, almost 30 years later, I stay up for the results. Conveniently, I already had the day off tomorrow so was thrilled when the date of the election was announced. Even with the day off, I don't think I can handle being up all night these days so am planning to see the exit polls come in and then sleep until about 2.30. It's always a bit dull until things really get going around then.

JawJaw · 04/07/2024 21:14

@EnglishBluebell I don’t work in government and politics but like every single citizen of the country I am directly affected by who is in power. Everybody is.

I also spent a lot of time with my grandparents, who despite being British citizens did not have the right to vote until they were 18 (grandads)and 28 (grandmother). We all know how women had to fight to get the vote, but working class men could not vote until 1918! My grandparents were not earnest middle class types but they were really serious about democracy because they knew how precious and hard won it was. My grandmother was German so she had an extra reason to value democracy. Our family always got involved in election day. X factor too, and royal weddings. But seriously, which of those national events is more important? It’s something that you are personally involved in, you have a vote and everybody’s vote counts.

Leaving aside that seriousness election tv is actual drama with characters (heroes and villains) surprises and plot twists. You honestly think X factor is better?

JawJaw · 04/07/2024 21:19

Also, watching the results is an integral part of democracy. It’s vital that we all witness it happening so that the process is transparent, scrutinised and engaging. Imagine a society which let it all happen behind closed doors without interest. That is a frightening thought

Will watch exit poll and then to bed. R4 on all night (as it always is) so will absorb news while asleep and wake up entirely informed without effort. Telly pictures will be rehearsed many times over the next couple of days so if I want to see JRM etc lose their seats, it’ll be on a permanent loop. Such is the nature of 24 hour news.

IAlwaysTellTheTruthEvenWhenILie · 04/07/2024 21:23

I remember staying up as a teenager and watching through the night.

Now I have a teething 17 month old and the broken sleep has been too much this week so I'll be off to bed after the exit polls.

Enjoy all who are staying up!

ConcernedOfClapham · 04/07/2024 20:20

What’s with all the cheese?

Am planning to stay up, but cheese supplies are low. Should I rush out to replenish???!!!???

Beginning to think this is the reason for my local AldCado had 0 edam / gouda... such good cheese intake - long night ahead for some!

MerryMarys · 04/07/2024 21:29

It's like saying why watch sport when the results are online the next day.

Not really the same at all. The votes have all been cast by 10pm!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 04/07/2024 21:35

Working tomorrow, so no late night for me.

The votes may have been cast but the results are not yet known.

mitogoshi · 04/07/2024 21:40

I'm no heading to bed after the exit polls, I usually wake 2-3 times being a rubbish sleeper, I'll stay up from 3am ish

Stickortwister · 04/07/2024 21:40

Anyone else feeling a bit nervous? My wish list includes obviously a labour majority. Libdems in opposition and tories less than 100. And no reform obvs. Worried there are actually loads of shy tories and I'm going to be massively disappointed by the great bristish public ( think this is a bit of brexit night ptsd).
Have snacks and drinks and been on the coffee this afternoon...

GameOfJones · 04/07/2024 21:47

God there are some right misery guts on this thread.

I always stay up as much as I can and book the day after an election off work.

I'm very interested in politics and an election night always feels exciting with lots of moving parts. I don't want to "find out in the morning" I like watching it unfold live. It's once every few years and hurts nobody other than makes me very tired the next day.

I wouldn't stay up to watch the Superbowl in the middle of the night like DH does, he doesn't stay up with me to watch election results but we respect that each other find these events interesting.

I'm not at work tomorrow and DDs are at school so I can doze as much as I like during the day tomorrow to recover.

I've got a blanket on the sofa in case I fall asleep, a block of brie and some crackers. Bring it on!
