Can you help with a polite one liner to stop these conversations with SILs?

I am very close to DBs and very different to SILs in personality but we all get on ok. I have a specific style which I wear day in day out - and have for 35 years. SIL both love shopping, especially for clothes and discuss clothes a lot, I am not involved in these discussions.

The last 3 times I have seen them together they have tried to arrange a "make over" for me. I get it, they think I wear old stuff and need some pizzazz, but it is just not my style. Also make up, which I do not and have never worn. Also, I have MS and mobility issues and what I wear works for me, I am very very busy.

I have smiled and been sort of evasive but now they are offering dates for my big "make over" and they are super excited. What can I say to firmly but politely tell them, thanks but no thanks.

She sounds appalling. I’d say “No thanks, I wouldn’t like a make over” and leave it at that. You’ve tried being subtle. She’s unbelievably rude to keep pushing this so frankly anything short of “fuck off” is polite.

I generally find people who want to change everyone else’s look have terrible taste, fwiw. I have a friend who is constantly talking about making over people’s houses and how she might go into it professionally- her idea of taste is “rip out all original features, paint it grey then add a lot LEDs” 🤢

Grey is so tacky

BreatheAndFocus · 30/06/2024 14:44

”Thank you, SIL. That’s kind of you to offer, but I don’t want a make-over of any kind as I’m happy with the way I look and feel it’s right for me as an individual”.

soupfiend · 30/06/2024 14:44

The trouble with pushy people is that they wont just leave it, they'll be badgering.

They'll say 'no honestly, you'll love it'

They'll try and contradict the OP

AtLeastWeTried · 30/06/2024 14:45

"Thank you I already have clothes, and my face is attactive without make up"

IncompleteSenten · 30/06/2024 14:46

Say no thank you, I love the way I look. It makes me happy. I don't want to change.

MeAgainAndAgain · 30/06/2024 14:46

I really dislike pushy people like this.

And the cake! How ridiculous! Does she think you are incapable of baking a cake or buying one from a supermarket?

It is actually infantilising of her. You are not able to make ‘proper’ decisions so don’t worry, she will do it for you. She will save you and ensure things are done properly.

I my dreams this is what I might say……..’Oh SIL, I am fine thank you. But I was looking at the outfits you’ve been wearing recently, I can help you look a bit more classy/modern/traditional/interesting if you want some help. Just let me know, it must be so difficult for you when you don’t understand how to chose appropriate clothes.’ But in reality, who can be bothered?!

Lurkingandlearning · 30/06/2024 14:47

….”ooh, let’s see who gets the most offended- me because you are criticising how I look or you when I tell you to fuck off.”

godmum56 · 30/06/2024 14:47

BippityBopper · 30/06/2024 14:15

Just say "thanks, but I'd rather not have the makeover. I'm happy with how I look"

That's plenty polite. If they get offended then that's on them.

This. It sounds like all the "getting on ok" effort is on your side

Grey is so tacky

I like grey but then "I" chose it.

Windysquall · 30/06/2024 14:49

Redshoeblueshoe · 30/06/2024 14:39

As you have said no 3 times - you are on to

No fucking thanks

Definitely this.

what’s with all the ‘thanks for the offer, I appreciate the thought’ shite - just say no. As pp have said, if your SILs take offence that’s on them.

Hibernatalie · 30/06/2024 14:49

Don't worry about offending her - she sure as shit isn't worried about offending you. Maybe have a chat with your brother and ask him to have a word - explain she is really insulting you.

Kovus · 30/06/2024 14:51

" Thank you for the offer, but I already have my Fairy Godmother to help me and a couple of crystal slippers on standby. "

send them this link, rinse ans repeat

We are different people SIL.
I like my style.
It works for me.
I don't want a makeover.
With the greatest respect, please don't mention it again.

I understand their motivation. I live doing people up. My friend went to a very posh restaurant with me in her old hiking boots, bland jeans and a top and an old Karrimor jacket, no n make up, hair un brushed. She’s thin and has a body you could clothe well. So I desperately wanted to re-do her look.

But, none of that means I had any right to take away someone else’s autonomy. I didn’t let her know what I was thinking and neither should I have. I think I need to work on my desire to change people.

I dress totally appropriately for any ocassion. I have good skin I look after and don't think make up adds anything. To a posh restaurant I would wear my copped tapered Kenzo trousers with a cream silk shirt from jigsaw and my black Satin Nike Air Max and my self portrait brocade jacket.

SIL's would wear a much more brightly coloured outfit: tiered maxi dresses are very much the thing at the moment, and heels, lipstick and an evening bag. I only own 1 bag and use it all day every day: a mulberry mini anthony. They each have about 30 bags! It is just a very different idea about everything and I say each to their own but they clearly do not see it this way and think I am drab and need jazzing up 😂

it sounds like they need the makeover!

Mercurysinretrograde · 30/06/2024 14:56

How about “Thanks for the kind offer but it’s really not my thing. I’m comfortable with my current style and it’s manageable with my lifestyle which is something I always need to consider. I’d love to do something else with you though - how about tea at x / going for facials / whatever?”

MeAgainAndAgain · 30/06/2024 14:56

There’s a Miranda scene for every situation in life.

BBC Miranda - Welcome to I'm OK. You're Obese. - Season 1 Episode 1 "Date"

soupfiend · 30/06/2024 14:56

You all sound very well turned out. Not sure what their issue is. Perhaps they just need a hobby and theyve rudely decided you are their hobby.

Vacuous.

madameparis · 30/06/2024 14:57

“What makes you think I need a makeover?”

And then watch them squirm answering.

I think you assume too much self awareness from them

They wouldnt squirm, they'd probably answer the question, citing a load of flaws (non existent of course)

BasiliskStare · 30/06/2024 14:59

@MeAgainAndAgain - that Miranda video made me giggle.

@OP - I would just say to them , Nice thought but please don't book in a makeover for me I just don't want to do it.
