Moving to Yorkshire

susan5678 · 25/06/2024 16:14

I live in Bournemouth and want to move to Yorkshire to rent a flat no more than £600 a month for a 2 Bed Flat as it would be for myself and my 34 year old son. I would like to live in a nice quiet area. Where there is no anti-social behaviour. A nice neighbourhood. Could anyone tell me the nice areas to live in where the Rent is reasonable. Quality of life is very important to me. Any help would be very much appreciated.

The very thought, indeed. Not actual Ilkley...🤣

Agree with @TarantinoIsAMisogynist. OP, you need to travel up and spend some time here looking at areas.

I grew up in South Yorkshire and much prefer it to West Yorkshire where I live now. Your money would go further there, however, your budget wouldn't cover the nice areas. I really don't like West Yorkshire, 1 train an hour, barely a bus service and nothing interesting to do where I live now. In South Yorkshire I had country walks at the end of my road and people were friendly.

Be aware that antisocial behaviour is rife pretty much everywhere so no one can guarantee you an area that doesn't have it, certainly within your budget.

I hope you haven't fallen for the 'it's cheap up North' spiel as it's far from true. I've just been on holiday in some beautiful villages just below the midlands and cannot believe how much more you get for your money than in Yorkshire. There's also the council tax issue - the properties I saw on my holiday were around band C (detached with land) yet my 4 bed semi is band F here in W Yorks 😑.

I've no experience of Bournemouth, but don't be surprised if you move up here and can't access a lot of things you may be used to. A lot of Yorkshire is quite deprived and lacks access.

I've just had a look on rightmove and the closest (shithole) town to me has only single rooms in HMOs available within your budget. The lowest rent for a whole property is £750pm. Note that I don't live in a nice, expensive or well connected part of W Yorks, yet the cost for a small town so this is likely to be on the lower end of what you'd expect to pay up here.

Tutulechapeau · 26/06/2024 16:26

@DayIntarnishedarmour Oh come on, nice ordinary people live in those places. Not all are ruffians. Thousands of perfectly respectable families actually live in Harehills or Halton.

Can;t be done OP roughly sums it up! Being honest and realistic up north as we all are, know this..long gone are the days even in the ex mining communities where housing is cheap. Really sorry but it is what it is.

LadyPenelope68 · 26/06/2024 08:15

The arse end of nowhere, with rental prices higher than the OP wants to pay for absolute dumps.

That is clearly not the case. It’s on a train line to Leeds and Manchester, close to the M62 junctions, supermarkets, shops, bars, the best curry house in Calderdale, the annual Rushbearing Festival and is the home of Happy Valley. It’s the next town to Halifax that this week has had live shows at the Piece Hall from Bryan Adams, Sheryl Crow etc

Bournemouth is far nicer and no stupid accents.

There’s more houses than flats strangely, but looking a lot seem to be shared houses

Edited

Deleted as quoted wrong person, sorry

DayIntarnishedarmour · 26/06/2024 19:32

Tutulechapeau

There are lots of nice, ordinary people everywhere but OP asked for areas without a high crime rate. The crime rate in these areas is high.

I did find a one bedroom flat but it's harehills not roundhay for £625.

Infact there's just not much to rent whatsoever in LS8. I don't think it would be a good choice tbh.

Bloody hell, I would leave the house in Harehills without armed security, it’s grim.

I live right on the boundary of S and W Yorks. I'm an incomer of 20 years. I've no pint to prove or axe to grind, but I think that this description, and write off, of W Yorks is a bit unkind and misrepresentative of W Yorks. It's a huge county, with big urban centres - Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, Calderdale, Wakefield, all of which have more than 1 train an hours and are big busy cities with concert halls, museums, shops, theatres, parks, bowling alleys, sports centres, football stadiums, restaurants, even an ice hockey team, indoor and outdoor artificial ski slopes, bike rides etc etc etc ; and glorious countryside - "Summer Wine " country around Holmfirth for example. Some very affluent areas north of Leeds - Wetherby, Otley, Ilkey, and former pit villages around Pontefract which are less wealthy. West Yorks is a very diverse county, you can't just write it off.

Agree. Loads of great country walks in West Yorkshire - Brontë Country, Ilkley Moor, Hardcastle Crags, Otley Chevin, Marsden Moor and loads more.

Briliiant art galleries, museums, theatres - loads of things to do.

Simplepink · 26/06/2024 20:36

2 Bedroom cottage in Wilsden a village on the outskirts of Bradford. Lovely place to live

Crikeyalmighty · 26/06/2024 23:55

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads I agree and as a north Notts girl originally- a lot of south yorks to me is grim

Normallynumb · 27/06/2024 00:14

Is there a reason why you're thinking of Yorkshire?
Do you have ties to any particular area?
I think you need to narrow down your choice of region by doing some serious research
NE Lincs area is cheap, but rents are high everywhere

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 27/06/2024 06:52

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads I have lived in Yorkshire for 40yrs so I'm entitled to think some of it is shit. Most of those cities you mentioned have things to do, yes, but are not nice to live in and have huge crime problems (don't forget OP wants somewhere with zero anti-social behaviour 🙄). Personally I hate cities so would be my idea of hell living in one - it's bad enough working in one.

Not sure how you think I inferred the entirety of West Yorkshire has nothing though as I stated there was nothing where I live now. This thread isn't about what's the best part of Yorkshire, it's about what area the OP can afford and she can't afford any of those nice areas you listed and doesn't want to travel to any of it either by the sounds of it as she wants it all on her doorstep. She also doesn't want to live in the countryside where the nicer parts are.

It's not looking like OP will be back anyway now it's been made clear that rents are too expensive in 99% of the county.

Agreed. Sowerby Bridge is all right - the high street is a bit run down (but pretty clean), there is good access to surrounding towns and it's a safe area. It has the deepest canal lock in England and it has a swimming pool!

onanotherday · 27/06/2024 08:58

Have you considered Norfolk?

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 27/06/2024 09:46

Have a look at the East Riding of Yorkshire. I've found a fair few around the Bridlington, Driffield and Beverley areas. I'm not sure how to link on here but these are the ones I've found. The one on Marton road is slightly over £600 but is in a nice area although does get busy during school times and can be busy during summer time but has bus stops, that run regularly into the town centre. There's 2 Co ops and an Aldi within walking distance and also a library near one of the Co ops. Olinda road isn't in the greatest of areas. It's safe though and is opposite Tescos Lidl, B&M a Cooplands and the train station, plus walking distance into the town centre, harbour and south side beach.

East Yorkshire is what you're looking for. Lovely and rural, excellent communities, close to York city centre but lots of amenities in the towns/villages too. Cheaper housing than the rest of Yorkshire ime. I'd be chastised for telling you this as the locals want to keep it small and undiscovered but they keep building new houses. I'm in pocklington. Shhhh

AllThePotatoesAreSinging · 19/07/2024 09:37

Comments about Harehills being not so bad haven’t aged well. I stand by my comments even more after last night’s riot!

DayIntarnishedarmour · 19/07/2024 09:56

AllThePotatoesAreSinging. I was thinking of this thread after last night too. I live about 5 mins from Harehills and totally stand by my post about the crime rate there. Of course there are great people who live there, who want a quiet life but as it’s clear to see, there’s an element of disenfranchised, antisocial twats who ruin the area for everyone else. Last time I was there I saw two blokes doing a drug deal in mid afternoon while I was walking to a hospital appointment. Men driving like maniacs round the streets. My friends elderly DM was mugged and left bruised and bashed when she was visiting her friend in a care home about 8 years ago. No matter how many argue otherwise, it’s not a safe place to live unless you have to.

SallyWD · 19/07/2024 10:16

Yep, I probably defended Harehills on this thread. We often go there for delicious food from all around the world. I feel sorry for the law abiding people who live there. I know many good people who live there including a professor at our university. You couldn't find a more gentle, law abiding man.
However, no one can deny the very real problems that exist in Harehills. Last night's events made me very sad.
