Moving to Yorkshire

susan5678 · 25/06/2024 16:14

I live in Bournemouth and want to move to Yorkshire to rent a flat no more than £600 a month for a 2 Bed Flat as it would be for myself and my 34 year old son. I would like to live in a nice quiet area. Where there is no anti-social behaviour. A nice neighbourhood. Could anyone tell me the nice areas to live in where the Rent is reasonable. Quality of life is very important to me. Any help would be very much appreciated.

The OP is moving for "more space" for her and her adult son, so she needs a 2-bed.

Saschka · 25/06/2024 17:29

OP, why is the limit £600? If you aren’t working, presumably you are entitled to housing benefit or pension credit? And if you are working, even if both of you are on min wage, you’ll be able to afford more than £600 between two of you.

Propertyshmoperty · 25/06/2024 17:32

Maybe Scarborough or Selby with that budget? :) I'm from York originally and the rent and house prices have gone crackers... (although my current location is no better)

What are you driving that takes you 4 and a half hours to drive across North Yorkshire?! Its big but its not that big.

in't tracta wee-a traila a hay bales

greencartbluecart · 25/06/2024 17:34

If op is claiming housing benefit she may get less in Scarborough than bornmouth
?

Blouson · 25/06/2024 17:35

Why question her budget?! If she says she has £600-750 max then thats her budget. So blooming patronising.

JemOfAWoman · 25/06/2024 17:43

Here you go!

Yes it's part of the garrison area but because of that it's incredibly safe, good supermarkets and you have great bus links to Darlington where there is loads to do.

Blouson · 25/06/2024 17:48

The problem with moving somewhere totally unknown is you have zero local intelligence and will likely end up in a shit area/street.

MisterMagnolia · 25/06/2024 17:49

Scarborough perhaps? Or would you consider somewhere in Derbyshire? You might find somewhere in Belper or Ashbourne. Both small safe towns with nice countryside around and cheapish accomodation.
I hear that Northumbria is great for lower rents and nice places to live.

I live near York. It’s not that cheap up north. In the whole of North Yorkshire on Right move only 19 2 bed flats, and not the best areas

greencartbluecart · 25/06/2024 17:54

Northumberland is not good for public transport and local amenities like shops and low crime rates where rents are low

RainbowColouredRainbows · 25/06/2024 17:55

You are going to struggle with that budget in North Yorkshire and Leeds. When we moved up, the places we were looking at in the nice places of Leeds were not dissimilar to what we were paying in a nice part of London. Closer to the 750 you might be better looking at some areas of West Yorkshire like Brighouse or Halifax. Plus, the transport links tend to be a bit better around there than the more rural ends of North Yorkshire that have been recommended on here and you'd have fairly regular train links to Leeds, Manchester, Huddersfield and Bradford so better for work opportunities.

hellywelly3 · 25/06/2024 17:55

There’s more houses than flats strangely, but looking a lot seem to be shared houses

I'm from Harrogate and partner and I were paying £750pm for a tiny one bed flat previously. It's very expensive here sadly, you'd have no chance getting a 2 bed within your budget. Are you hellbent on North Yorkshire? x

hellywelly3 · 25/06/2024 17:59

This one looks nice but in a nice village not a town.

That's for students.

Nostrawberriesandcream · 25/06/2024 18:06

Have you looked at Barnsley/Wakefield? You'd get a 2 bed house/flat in a reasonable area for £600-£700. You just obviously need to check areas. Feels safe going into Barnsley Town centre.
Someone's put a Deepcar house (north Sheffield) I'd avoid that road but most of Stocksbridge/Deepcar are great, friendly and reasonable local shopping however the bus service isn't as reliable as it could be.

No Bournemouth has changed a lot. I have lived her all my life. Rents are very expensive. I would like to live in North Yorkshire.

I live in or near North Yorkshire. Your budget sounds unrealistic, especially with your criteria.

AspiringMermaid · 25/06/2024 18:11

I'm surprised no has said Skipton. Very sleepy (boring) town in north Yorkshire, but it has a direct train to Leeds. My sister lived there, she said it felt safe. It has a nice high street, a few good cafes and takeaways, also market on a few days every week.

Scarborough…

Catterick Garrison/Colburn

But not that nice!

Scarborough is definitely going up in the world nowadays to be fair.

Skipton is gorgeous but presumed it's out of budget, like your link. But maybe there's cheaper places in the vicinity.

YorkHouse · 25/06/2024 18:20

What do you need to be close to - shops (large supermarkets?), independent shops, typical city centre or large town shops? Or would somewhere with a Tesco Express be ok?

Do you need good/easy access to a hospital?

Do you/your son need to commute to work somewhere?
