Moving to Yorkshire

susan5678 · 25/06/2024 16:14

I live in Bournemouth and want to move to Yorkshire to rent a flat no more than £600 a month for a 2 Bed Flat as it would be for myself and my 34 year old son. I would like to live in a nice quiet area. Where there is no anti-social behaviour. A nice neighbourhood. Could anyone tell me the nice areas to live in where the Rent is reasonable. Quality of life is very important to me. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Scarborough is a possibility, everything you need in Scarborough but it has some grim parts
Easr Yorkshire, Bridlington, Driffield Hornsea either sea all a bit rural but cheaper than North Yorkshire and all nice places. Hull is worth looking at if you want a bigger city with better connections as is cottingham which is very close to hull.
Lincolnshire is much cheaper although I’d avoid Scunthorpe and Grimsby.
Parts of Doncaster are worth looking at, again there are good and bad parts but housing is cheaper there.

Are you saying multicultural places can'tbe rough? Lots of places are multiracial and completely safe. Harehills is literally listed as one of the most dangerous parts of leeds. Depending on where you look, Harehills is either the 3rd or 4th most dangerous part of leeds with the largest proportion of crimes being violent crimes.

Harehills really is rough as arseholes. Nothing to do with being multiracial.Like you say, plenty of places are multiracial and don’t have the rates of dangerous crime Harehills has. Look at the crime stats!

For the record I also think it’s got good restaurants, and a great market, but that doesn’t mean it’s a nice place to be after dark.

WhatNoPeas · 26/06/2024 07:08

Harehills is mixed. I have friends there and go often. The area which borders Chapel Allerton and Roundhay is safer. A lot of the crime is inward facing, if that makes sense. So last year there was a murder but it was people who knew each other. I do feel safe there, more so than if I'm in Gipton or Seacroft, but I don't think OP would.

LlynTegid · 26/06/2024 07:18

I think you should wait until the winter before visiting somewhere and deciding to move there. You may find it difficult with the earlier darkness and lower temperatures. You can have the heating on more though to counteract the latter.

Look at Sowerby Bridge in Calderdale

House on the sea front at Withernsea, East Yorkshire for £525 per month

Withernsea is quite a deprived area these days. It's also extremely isolated: an hour's bus trip from Hull and not on any rail routes. It's necessary to go through Hull to get to pretty much anywhere else, unless you're going further up the coast. Hornsea, a little further north, is better but as expected more expensive.

The arse end of nowhere, with rental prices higher than the OP wants to pay for absolute dumps.

Shipley near Bradford is a great place to live. An all round good place to live

WinnerWinnerCDinner · 26/06/2024 08:34

Darlington might be worth a look...

NotApplePie · 26/06/2024 08:49

I think Bradford is getting a bad rap on this thread. Sure there are rough areas but that’s everywhere. Yes avoid the inner city but the outskirts are quite nice. Saltaire, Bingley, Baildon, Haworth, Cullingworth.

sashh · 26/06/2024 09:09

Is there a reason you want a flat?

In parts of Yorkshire there are loads of terraced houses, would you consider that?

JurassicClark · 26/06/2024 09:34

You’re either on a wind up, OP, or you’re living in a 1980s fantasy of a cheep life Oop North.

You start by mentioning a massive and hugely diverse region of the country with no specifics. Then you want to live in North Yorkshire but then choose affluent areas of Leeds in West Yorkshire. You have a wildly unrealistic budget. You’ve never even been to the region.

Assuming you’re posting in good faith, what on earth made you think a “nice” area in Yorkshire would fit your requirements more than any other area of the country you might actually know?

I don’t think there’s any more thought in this than people talking about “retiring to the country”

I agree, but not at 2 beds for £600 a month!

Edited

Where's the market in Harehills?

It's the kind of place I lock the car doors when driving through after dark so I wouldn't recommend moving there to someone who's looking for a naice place to live.

Bring back Tradex is all I can say 😜 iykyk

Well, mini markets. All of them! Always find something interesting there.

Slightly chuckling about Bradford getting an absolute pasting when Ilkley, the supposed jewel in the crown of the north, is technically in that district. However, I think OP you'd have zero chance of affording much there - prices are high.

There are quite a lot of mean-spirited comments on here about various places - I'm not sure of anywhere really that doesn't have some issues, but nearly everywhere in Yorkshire has its plus and negative points. I work for the largest council in the region, and even our most affluent places have their own problems. And plenty of the places that people have says on here are crap actually have lots going for them.

I'd suggest OP that you do a trip up and spend a few days here to get a feel for where you actually like.

I remember the outrage when Ilkley got the same lockdown treatment as the rest of Bradford when the country was in tiers and and localised restrictions were in place. The very idea that Ilkley should be treated like the rest of the Bradford area! 😂😂

On a serious note, I second this advice.

It sounds to me like you want to be in a town/city, so assuming that is the case, ignore all the recommendations you've had for villages in the back of beyond with no train line etc.

I would take a few weekends to spend time in the different Yorkshire cities and get a feel for them, as they're all different. The posts on this thread have focused on North/West Yorkshire, but you are likely to find that your budget goes further in South Yorkshire, so I wouldn't rule out Sheffield, Doncaster etc.

The recommendations for the Shipley/Bingley/Silsden area are also worth considering - they are decent areas to live, with good transport connections etc. I would avoid Keighley though.

User1974 · 26/06/2024 10:39

WOW, just wow @LadyPenelope68

decionsdecisions62 · 26/06/2024 10:42

The majority of people moving to ilkley these days are from London ( the only ones who can afford it)

I think the op has aspirations of a Yorkshire country life but obviously hasn't a clue that the areas she wants and has names are some of the priciest in the country. That's why they call the area between York Harrogate and Leeds the golden triangle!

The areas she can actually afford are slightly less quaint should we say. Hey guess what Southerners we don't all live downt pit thee knows and have outside toilets!
