Moving to Yorkshire

susan5678 · 25/06/2024 16:14

I live in Bournemouth and want to move to Yorkshire to rent a flat no more than £600 a month for a 2 Bed Flat as it would be for myself and my 34 year old son. I would like to live in a nice quiet area. Where there is no anti-social behaviour. A nice neighbourhood. Could anyone tell me the nice areas to live in where the Rent is reasonable. Quality of life is very important to me. Any help would be very much appreciated.

That's for students.

I’ve reported it. Sorry.

We used to live there in the 80s/90s. It was fine to live in (though we were using it as a commuter town, me to York him to the late lamented ICI). It looks to have improved since then, the town square has nice cafes now, there's a choice of supermarkets.

But no cheap flats listed at the moment unfortunately.

Thirsk is a funny one at the moment to be fair, I can see both sides of this argument. DH and I stayed there overnight a few years ago and it was pleasant, though a bit rough round the edges at night. I was there recently again, and there's a lot of new housing being built which isn't doing it any favours whatsoever in our estimation. It's completely overwhelming the character in the centre and it all feels just soulless. Odd.

Bournemouth is far nicer and no stupid accents.

Would 100% prefer a Yorkshire accent over a Bournemouth one 😂😂

I'm surprised no has said Skipton. Very sleepy (boring) town in north Yorkshire, but it has a direct train to Leeds. My sister lived there, she said it felt safe. It has a nice high street, a few good cafes and takeaways, also market on a few days every week.

Skipton is great, sure, but it's out of budget.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/06/2024 18:27

OP - what are you paying at the moment as that's very cheap for Bournemouth- are you in social housing? As if so could you look for an exchange-why the£600 limit? Is this to keep within housing allowance as that might be a problem too - if you are up front ( no one knows you here) it might be easier to suggest other places too - good bits of Yorkshire are expensive and the few bits you can afford don't fit the safe/quiet criteria

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 25/06/2024 18:36

Todmorden? It's just on the border of West Yorkshire and Lancashire. It has great bus and rail networks.

I don't live there, but I do live in West Yorkshire and Tod appears to be doing well at the moment. It used to have a bit of a stigma attached to it.

There are other areas surrounding such as Sowerby Bridge, Mytholmroyd and Luddenden Foot where you might get something for your budget, and they are all pretty pleasant places.

We might have a strange accent as per previous poster, but we are quite friendly too.

KenAdams · 25/06/2024 18:59

Oh stop replying to the accent post, the poster is clearly on a wind up.

OP - can you answer the questions asked? Why North Yorkshire if you've never been?

Crikeyalmighty · 25/06/2024 19:07

Does it have to be a flat OP- you haven't said if there is a reason for that disabled etc??

If not these are some decent options I've picked around Huddersfield- I'm a bit of a snob but quite like Huddersfield- it's on the train- big enough to have a lot of facilities but that nice stone everywhere- town centre mainly flat- cheap but has a uni - so it's not deadly - for that budget you could do worse- it also has exceptionally nice countryside very close by and quick into nice places like Holmfirth and Saddleworth

I live in Roundhay area. Rents are steep. I'm seeing rents for 1 room in a shared house for £500-£600. Flat rental in the area of £800 plus.

The schools are generally outstanding. Theres a great choice of restaurants and bars. You do get the odd nuisance from lads on those noisy bike things but it's a minor issue. North East Leeds is pricey though to rent. Some other cheaper areas you could choose. Meanwood is also getting expensive now as Roundhay and Chapel Allerton have maxed out. Good supermarkets and few nice restaurants and pubs in meanwood. Lots of young families rents are going up now.

decionsdecisions62 · 25/06/2024 19:13

I did find a one bedroom flat but it's harehills not roundhay for £625.

Infact there's just not much to rent whatsoever in LS8. I don't think it would be a good choice tbh.

RainbowColouredRainbows · 25/06/2024 19:44

Harehills is rough as arseholes and crime is rife. You are paying to live in Leeds with similar standard of living to Batley or Bradford.

This is quite a nice flat, a bit small but well within budget, lots of amenities near by and good transport links. Heckmondwike is nothing special like what you will have seen of North Yorkshire, and certainly not pretty, but not rough. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/149096162#/media?id=media0&ref=photoCollage&channel=RES_LET

Check out this 2 bedroom flat for rent on Rightmove

2 bedroom flat for rent in 2 Oldfield Lane , Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, WF16 for £625 pcm. Marketed by Yellow Brick Road Estate Agents, Sowerby Bridge

@RainbowColouredRainbows Harehills is multiracial. It's actually not 'rough as arseholes' as you put it but I suspect the op would feel like a fish out of water if she lived there.

mrssunshinexxx · 25/06/2024 20:02

Look at Sutton in craven / Crosshills but you'll need slightly bigger budget maybe £700/£750

Are you saying multicultural places can'tbe rough? Lots of places are multiracial and completely safe. Harehills is literally listed as one of the most dangerous parts of leeds. Depending on where you look, Harehills is either the 3rd or 4th most dangerous part of leeds with the largest proportion of crimes being violent crimes.

Tutulechapeau · 25/06/2024 20:36

@RainbowColouredRainbows rough means near poor folk then ? The eternal MNetter fear. That their children have ‘poor’ friends.

decionsdecisions62 · 25/06/2024 20:52

@RainbowColouredRainbows with all due respect I live on the border between Roundhay chapel allerton and harehills and it may well be in some TikTok list but I'm telling you it's a poor neighbourhood yes, but it's not the arsehole of the world you are making it out to be. We frequently eat out there because it has the most amazing restaurants and we buy foods that you just can't buy elsewhere. A number of my friends ( who live up the road in Roundhay frequently eat out in harehills). I've felt less safe in many all white supposedly upmarket areas of the country.

Yes we go to Harehills all the time to eat or go shopping. I like it.

No, like i said exactly in my post, rough is high levels of violent crime. The OP literally said she doesn't want to live somewhere with high levels of crime so advising her that here meets her criteria is poor advice.

It may have nice restaurants but that doesn't change the statistics and you 'feeling safe' doesn't mean the stats and victims of these crimes are lying too. The fact is, the OP could get far more for her money outside of Leeds and the flats are so pricey in Harehills because of its vicinity to the centre. If she were to look at a similar part of Bradford or Fartown/Bradley/Lockwood in Huddersfield, she could probably get a 3 bed house for what a 2 bed flat costs in Harehills.

Again, I never said the amenities were bad, my post purely stated facts around high crime rates as this is literally what the OP mentioned she DIDN'T want

taybert · 25/06/2024 21:58

Silsden is a good shout. Ruralish feel, close to proper rural but has supermarkets, restaurants etc. Probably opportunities for jobs nearby (it’s very near the hospital which employs a lot of people in the area) good access to the Dales and Leeds on the train line. It’s also not far from Lancashire with roads linking in to the M65 taking you towards Manchester too.

watchuswreckthemic · 25/06/2024 22:27

I think Rightmove is your friend here. Lots of lovely places in North Yorkshire but lots of villages would be incredibly isolating if you are reliant on public transport.
I'd do some dummy searches on your budget and really think about your needs and priorities/ best of luck!

NannyGythaOgg · 25/06/2024 22:38

There are some lovely areas in S Yorks that fit your need.

Penistone is easy to get to M1, Sheffield and Barnsley but is a lovely country town in its own right

Another option, if you can get past the name, is Cockermouth in Cumbria. Nice little town. Good sense of community and reasonable rents. Surrounded by stunning scenery.

You will really have to look at east Yorks and more out of the way parts of North Yorks I reckon OP.

ive lived in Leeds all my life. I’m in a one bed HA flat and it’s £628 pm. Flats for that price of private rentals will get a room in a shared house or a 1 bed in a not so great area. For crime rates and ASB, I’d steer clear of Harehills, Bradford, Headingley , Woodhouse, Halton Moor, Belle Isle. Meanwood is getting posher but still has a fair bit of crime. Great bars and restaurants and on good bus route but think it will be over budget. Same goes for Chapel Allerton which is great. Used to be really rundown when I was a kid but I could only dream of being able to afford anywhere there now .

I agree. Look on rightmove and then ask about the area for anything that looks possible. Good luck
