Moving to Yorkshire

susan5678 · 25/06/2024 16:14

I live in Bournemouth and want to move to Yorkshire to rent a flat no more than £600 a month for a 2 Bed Flat as it would be for myself and my 34 year old son. I would like to live in a nice quiet area. Where there is no anti-social behaviour. A nice neighbourhood. Could anyone tell me the nice areas to live in where the Rent is reasonable. Quality of life is very important to me. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I wouldn't want to live in Thirsk , it has an odd vibe to it, not very welcoming a fairly shabby

I drive to the station most days. I’ve met friends there occasionally, I wouldn’t describe it as shabby.

This is a typical terraced rental in Silsden which is just out of Keighley just to give you an idea of how far your money will go in some of the cheaper areas.

My brother used to live in Silsden and liked it. There's some nice places around there and the train goes into Leeds.

Thirsk has a train station, York 15 mins, Leeds 45 mins - I commute to York, with Leeds and London once a week from Thirsk, 2 hours 40 mins to London. Tons of parking at the station.

Yes, I know Thirsk has a station (some way out of the town centre) - Ripon and Helmsley don't.

cathyandclaire · 25/06/2024 16:52

You mght get something in East Yorkshire- Beverley is expensive, Brough and surrounding areas are OK and on the train line for easy access to Leeds and Hull.

Blouson · 25/06/2024 16:53

Another North Yorks place is Guisborough, theres a few in budget. Next to Roseberry Topping. Sadly like most places, good and bad areas. £600/month isnt a huge amount unfortunately.

scrapsontheside · 25/06/2024 16:53

@RedTinyCar Am I not allowed an opinion? Someone else said don't try Bradford . I would live in Bradford over Thirsk

Tomatojuiceandvodka · 25/06/2024 16:54

I lived in Harrogate as a new graduate between 2009 and 2011. Wonderful place. But I was paying 400-500 a month for a room in a house share then so that’s out of budget. Wetherby or knaresborough might be cheaper than Harrogate. If you drive lots of places between York and Harrogate might be cheaper but not central.

edited to add ripon was nice enough if I remember

MarlieJae · 25/06/2024 16:55

Richmond or Ripon, ex LA flats, £650. Walking distance to the centre. They are let very quickly.

A flat in Robin Hoods Bay, sea views but VERY steep walking. Little in the way of everyday shops.

A cottage with no frills, wellies required …in the middle of nowhere. You have to be interviewed too. 😂

Weatherby and Knaresborough would be out of budget

This lovely 2 bed cottage is £695. It's in Selby, East of Leeds and below York. Easy to commute to either.

We used to live there in the 80s/90s. It was fine to live in (though we were using it as a commuter town, me to York him to the late lamented ICI). It looks to have improved since then, the town square has nice cafes now, there's a choice of supermarkets.

But no cheap flats listed at the moment unfortunately.

I live in neighbourhood next door to Meanwood. My neighbourhood is called Weetwood (it's beautiful, safe and peaceful) but I don't think you'd get a 2 bed flat for £600 here.
Meanwood is pretty mixed to be honest. There's some affordable rental property there. In recent years it's become more fashionable. It has a Waitrose and some trendy bars. The Meanwood park is excellent (I live on the other side of it). However, there's still areas of deprivation in Meanwood and some of it looks quite rundown. If you're specifically looking for a lovely neighbourhood I'm worried it might not be quite right for you. I'd happily live there though.
Roundhay is lovely and another place I'd happily live. Again, I don't know how much flats cost there.

my 2 bed apartment in Weetwood is renting at 1300. (As in the one I lived in 2018, not owned by me!)

The last place I lived in Roundhay is rented out at 1700s

Rural is not cheaper, it’s more expensive. I was in Wetherby until recently, 2 bed apartments are at least 1200.

Harrogate is expensive too.

RedTinyCar · 25/06/2024 17:00

@scrapsontheside, you can think what you like 😂.

I think Thirsk is decent, I’ll probably move there when I retire just because of the train links/community/facilities instead of being in the sticks.

Thirsk

This North Yorkshire town is one of the best places to live, says The Sunday Times

A TOWN in North Yorkshire has been named as one of the best places by a national newspaper.

MiddleAgedDread · 25/06/2024 17:01

Why Yorkshire if you’ve never even been??
have you even clicked on the right move links that prople have given you?

MagicCastle · 25/06/2024 17:01

Not all of Bradford is awful, I grew up in Baildon in north Bradford, you also have East Morton areas of Keighley, Haworth etc, although £600 per month for a 2 bed is a big ask up here.... but not impossible. Can you possibly stretch your budget out a bit more? I welcome anybody wanting to move to Yorkshire, it is God's own county after all :) :)

scrapsontheside · 25/06/2024 17:01

@ErrolTheDragon I know some people who live there, they are not keen and say it has a lot of problems with weekend drinkers and they think it's shabby ( that's the polite version of what they think) they regret buying there massively

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 25/06/2024 17:01

People are talking about commutes, but (unless I've missed it) it's not clear that this is relevant to the OP?

OP - will either you or your son need to find work in Yorkshire? If so, this will dictate the areas that you can feasibly look at. Some of the areas being suggested don't have much in the way of employment opportunities.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 25/06/2024 17:01

Bingley is ok, not too much antisocial behaviour and you’d rent a 2 bed for under £700 per month

Barnabyby · 25/06/2024 17:02

Blouson · 25/06/2024 16:17

Bournemouth is far nicer and no stupid accents.

How rude.

One of the West Hull Villages might be ok
look around the Humber Bridge area

These are expensive. It might be worth looking further into the wolds area surrounding Driffield. The countryside there is beautiful, too.

Indeed

And on a good train line for getting into Leeds etc. too - that Airedale line is extremely reliable.

I live in Selby. It's not luxurious, few dodgy folk about but otherwise fine.
You get what you pay for.

Certainly alot nicer than Bradford. Please avoid.

susan5678 · 25/06/2024 17:04

We could stretch our budget to £750 a month but no more.
