Have you swapped your trainer liners for ankle socks?

Apparently this is now really uncool, and a huge giveaway of my enormously old age.

Trainer liners are awful. V uncool.

I’ve barely retired my skinny black jeans (even in this heat), but the socks seem an easier transition to help me stay ‘in touch’.

Thoughts?

I think ankle socks looks awful and chavvy, sorry I won’t be wearing them! Don’t care how old I look, I’ve never bothered about fashion anyway and have always gone for timeless items (good pair of jeans, high quality brown boots, Barbour jacket in the winter for e.g).

Isthatarealname · 24/06/2024 14:04

I haven't completely ditched them. My ankles are the thinnest part of me, legs look so short and stumpy with crew socks. I try and only use them with leggings for workout outfits and avoid socks all together with everything else

BogRollBOGOF · 24/06/2024 14:05

Trainer liners have always annoyingly slipped off my heels or let grit in.

I still lament the passing of slouch socks Grin

I'm obviously ahead of Gen-Z and the others - never worn liners but trainer socks which do show! Not sure if they count as ankle socks although you can see them Grin

darksigns · 24/06/2024 14:07

No, ankle socks are too hot in summer. And look awful, imo.

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 24/06/2024 14:38

I like trainer liners, but they don't like me.
I'm size 7.5- 8, and women's ones ping off my feet after they've been washed once and shrunk a tiny little bit. So I had a brainwave and bought small men's ones (don't you love that men's socks come in two sizes, but women's only one? 😡) but they didn't stay on because they were too big.

Have given up.

AtomicBlondeRose · 24/06/2024 14:40

Yes, I recently wore a midi skirt, brogues and white ankle socks which felt all kinds of wrong but actually looked pretty cool, I thought. And is less annoying than having liners ping off your feet every time you move. I don’t want to look like a teenager but I do like to stay a bit updated.

FortunataTagnips · 24/06/2024 14:43

Not a chance. I fear looking like a mad old lady.

SnapdragonToadflax · 24/06/2024 14:47

Given that I'm 42, the opinions of people young enough to be my children are not high on my list of priorities. I don't want to dress like a teenager, and the kids I've seen in thick white ankle socks look daft.

Anyway, everyone knows white ankle socks = virgin 😂

ArcticBells · 24/06/2024 14:52

Who dictates all these trends? I can't keep up!

Mochudubh · 24/06/2024 14:58

@SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit

Where are you finding men's socks in 2 sizes? I can only find 6-11 but loads of men must have feet bigger than that.

Pinkywoo · 24/06/2024 15:00

Certainly not, bare ankles with low converse is the hill I will die on.

Primark, Tu and George all have men's socks in two sizes... M&S has them in three!

A quick Google shows that M&S does women's in two sizes, which is something, at least.

magicstar1 · 24/06/2024 15:05

I couldn't care less what the trend is. Whether I wear short or long socks, I'll still look my age.
What I find strange is seeing so many young girls wearing crocs. After years of being told how awful they are, now they're fashionable. At least the girls aren't shoving their feet into tiny narrow shoes and are keeping their feet healthy.

fieldsofbutterflies · 24/06/2024 15:07

I've always worn ankle socks as they don't slip down or give me blisters. I don't really care whether people think they look stupid - I'd rather be comfortable.

FlaminHeckAilsa · 24/06/2024 15:07

I’m not swapping.it looks ridiculous.

KevinDeBrioche · 24/06/2024 15:08

I’ve swapped and think they look a lot better than trainer socks

purpleme12 · 24/06/2024 15:09

Never wear trainer liners.
I wear trainer socks when I've got bare legs and trainers.
Normal socks all the other times (ankle socks)
I don't know how that can be uncool but then I don't really care 😂

longdistanceclaraclara · 24/06/2024 15:14

The thing is now that the trainer sock generation are moving to ankle socks the kids will move back to trainer socks fast as anything.

When I was a teen it would have been fashion suicide to have any element of sock showing, or shoelace. It wasn't particularly comfortable!

sandstormsy · 24/06/2024 15:22

Are trained liners socks that stop at your ankle? We always called those "ankle socks" so I'm now confused. I assume what most people refer to as "ankle" socks means "normal" socks which you can see over your shoes?

I can't quite bring myself to have sock showing no matter how old it makes me look. I couldn't imagine going out in a skirt and full sized socks. My inner teenager wouldn't allow it!

What's the consensus on the even smaller socks that just like your foot that you'd wear with ballet pumps so no socks are visible at the top? I suppose now footwear fashion has changed there's little need for them.

UrsulaBelle · 24/06/2024 15:25

Trainer socks are trainer shaped, ankle socks cover your ankles and knee socks (does anyone except manga girls wear them?) come just under your knees.

These are trainer liners aren't they?
Trainer socks are slightly bigger and thicker. Cut so they sit under the ankle bone.

Ankle socks go over the ankle bone.

Anyway. I wear trainer socks with trainers. Ankle socks with boots.

robotgun · 24/06/2024 15:32

I've never worn trainer liners, I don't like the half sock thing, either wear socks or don't. I'm an all-in kinda gal.

Ankle socks are chavvy? Whatever next? Cardigans are chavvy?
