Have you swapped your trainer liners for ankle socks?

Apparently this is now really uncool, and a huge giveaway of my enormously old age.

Trainer liners are awful. V uncool.

I’ve barely retired my skinny black jeans (even in this heat), but the socks seem an easier transition to help me stay ‘in touch’.

Thoughts?

At my gym classes, there’s a real age identifier now with the sock situation.

I am old (52) so I’m still wearing trainer socks with a bare ankle. The youngsters are demonstrating their youth (and lack of vanity) by wearing socks up to their shins over their leggings). Without exception, they all now look like they have great big cankles and thick legs. But very trendy, which is all that matters, seemingly.

Yes, this. I work in a gym and the youngsters wear long socks- not just covering the ankle but at least half the shin too.

My 27 year old son came around yesterday wearing these.....
Surely it a good look!

Errrr… 😂

It’s a look similar to the one that you’d see on men getting out of their Rovers after having driven to Eastbourne for their summer holidays c. 1981. I remember it well!

crackfoxy · 24/06/2024 16:13

No because I have fat legs and ankle socks make them look worse

Trainer socks always irritated me, stopped wearing them years ago. Haven’t had a blister since.

SorrowsPrayers · 24/06/2024 16:16

@SirChenjins I know! It is so awful...and he is so handsome and gorgeous apart from his footwear!

TuesdayWhistler · 24/06/2024 16:18

I wear white crew socks..

With Crocs..

I'm searching for fucks to give and finding I'm all out... 🤣

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/06/2024 16:20

If it's warm enough not to wear tights it's too warm to wear shoes is my mantra. So I shun all types of summer sock.

If I am running or working out I wear proper running socks.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/06/2024 16:21

Also I'm 46. I couldn't give the slightest fuck about what 20 year olds think of my clothing choices.

Allnewtometoo · 24/06/2024 16:08

@Alwaysthesun24 I can't picture that at all (old...) can we have a pic?

When I was a young un, to start with it was socks pushed down, then somehow it morphed into folding the sock back over your heel , making a trainer sock out if a normal ankle sock. And tucking your laces in.

Cannot be bothered trying to photograph my lower body, sorry.

I've always worn ankle socks as they don't slip down or give me blisters. I don't really care whether people think they look stupid - I'd rather be comfortable.

This!! Ankle socks never went away for me. I’m delighted to see them officially back. So much more comfy and healthier for your feet. I always wear good quality cotton ankle socks with trainers and my feet never get sweaty, smell or get blisters. 👍

WeeOrcadian · 24/06/2024 16:30

Trainer liners were made by some sort.of sadist

Fuck them

Socks all the way

crostini · 24/06/2024 16:30

I'm early thirties and everyone I know where's ankle socks with their trainers.

It's literally a few millimetres that's visible.

I don't like the shoe liner things because they just go missing and slip down.

I only wear like a full length sock at home in the winter if I'm cold.

crostini · 24/06/2024 16:30

Wears

Same. And I still think I'm cooler than they will ever be 😂

I like trainer liners, but they don't like me.
I'm size 7.5- 8, and women's ones ping off my feet after they've been washed once and shrunk a tiny little bit. So I had a brainwave and bought small men's ones (don't you love that men's socks come in two sizes, but women's only one? 😡) but they didn't stay on because they were too big.

Have given up.

Primark ladies socks come different sizes and their trainer socks never slip or ping off (not the footies, they're still not great but the normal trainer socks are fab)

CormorantStrikesBack · 24/06/2024 16:42

Never worn trainer socks so am delighted to find out recently I’m suddenly very trendy 😁. I wear “crew” socks, aka what used to be called ankle socks with everything, dresses and trainers, dresses and loafers, skirts and Mary Janes.

i find it confusing that trainer socks are now called ankle socks and ankle socks now seem to be called crew socks.

PuppyMonkey · 24/06/2024 16:44

Oh I think leave the young folk to do whatever they want with a sock, they need some daft photos to look back and cringe about in a year or two.Grin

If only a few millimetres are showing then that's trainer socks not ankle socks. Ankle socks are similar height to what little girls wear on their first day of school (with white lace), ie cover the actual ankle.

YellowHairband · 24/06/2024 16:50

Is it ankle socks that are fashionable now? I thought it was crew socks?
To me, ankle socks are barely visible above an trainer, crew socks come halfway up your shin.

I thought ankle socks were the sign of being a (shock horror) unfashionable millennial compared to a fashionable Gen Z in a longer pair.

DumbassHamsterSitterPerson · 24/06/2024 16:50

I did wonder if people were using different names for things. A PP said its only a few millimeters of ankle sock that shows over trainers... not the socks I call ankle socks!
Trainer socks have a few mm showing over trainers. Ankle socks have a lot of sock on display.

MartyFunkhouser · 24/06/2024 16:52

This is the look we’re talking about.

I'm obviously ahead of Gen-Z and the others - never worn liners but trainer socks which do show! Not sure if they count as ankle socks although you can see them Grin

Same here, but only because the trainer liners fall off and under my heels.

scalt · 24/06/2024 17:07

I have a simple solution to the sock problem - I mostly go sockless.

Yes, I know, massively disgusting Mumsnet sin. "But you'll get blisters, and your feet will stink!" But I've done it regularly since childhood, while my parents protested, and I've always liked the way it feels. I choose my trainers carefully, and pick ones which are comfy for this. I seem to be lucky in that I don't get any problems with blisters or sweat. I do wear socks for sport (and then it's socks that go over my ankles), but it's sockless for anything else.

Mistymountain · 24/06/2024 17:11

I'm 65 and never gave up my ankle socks in the first place, although I wear them for practicality not fashion. Trainer liners just slip down my feet and are useless, sockless I get terrible blisters.
