Have you swapped your trainer liners for ankle socks?

Apparently this is now really uncool, and a huge giveaway of my enormously old age.

Trainer liners are awful. V uncool.

I’ve barely retired my skinny black jeans (even in this heat), but the socks seem an easier transition to help me stay ‘in touch’.

Thoughts?

Primark does socks in 2 sizes for women, I got some in size 2-5 there the other day. I have 'quarter socks' which are a bit higher than trainer socks but not as high as ankle socks. They are good because they neither slip down or remind me of school uniform. No idea if they fit current trends though!

Oldraver · 24/06/2024 15:35

I wear frilled trainer liners and they show just above the trainer so not like the no show ones

Quisto · 24/06/2024 15:36

The socks that stop at your ankle are quarter socks. I wear mens Underarmour and DS 2 wears Adidas, either junior or women's depending on availability. I'm not trendy or young. Nike make them too, and we did have some Hugo Boss pairs.

Trainer liners have always annoyingly slipped off my heels or let grit in.

I still lament the passing of slouch socks Grin

Slouch socks - there’s a memory 😁. Loved them!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 24/06/2024 15:39

I certainly will be. I have always hated trainer liners. They just slip off my heels - it drives me nuts!

LawrieForShepherdsBoy · 24/06/2024 15:41

I haven’t worn trainer socks or liners for a while, but mainly wear jeans/trousers so it’s not too much of a shift.

When on show, getting the sock trainer/show combination right is tricky. I’ve seen it look great on people, but they’ve obviously thought about sock colour and length in relation to everything else they’re wearing.

KatPurrson · 24/06/2024 15:45

I hate socks of any description. Can’t
abide the feeling of them on my feet.

Funnily enough I am fine with tights/stockings though.

Tomatina · 24/06/2024 15:47

With jeans, any kind of socks will look OK.

But ankle socks with a skirt? Oh no, not if you are over about 10. You might look as if you are dressing up as an early 1950s teenager - fine if that was your intention. But otherwise there's a definite 'recently escaped from an institution' vibe.

Mercurial123 · 24/06/2024 15:47

I'm 53. I'm not influenced by what people in their 20's are wearing. So, no ankle socks for me.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 24/06/2024 15:48

Trainer liners all the way for me. I've tried many brands and by far the best is George, they have the rubber thing on the back to prevent slippage. Sizes S-M and L-XL.

I might wear the odd pair of ankle socks now and again but they look silly, in my opinion so trainer liners it is.

Slouch socks were ace!

MartyFunkhouser · 24/06/2024 15:53

At my gym classes, there’s a real age identifier now with the sock situation.

I am old (52) so I’m still wearing trainer socks with a bare ankle. The youngsters are demonstrating their youth (and lack of vanity) by wearing socks up to their shins over their leggings). Without exception, they all now look like they have great big cankles and thick legs. But very trendy, which is all that matters, seemingly.

SirChenjins · 24/06/2024 15:55

No - ankle socks are what our parents wore back in the 80s with their supermarket trainers, it wasn’t a good look then and it isn’t now. The best trainer liners I have are cheapies from Home Bargains of all places. Cheap as chips and don’t budge.

YY to slouch socks - they were fab!

LoobyDoop2 · 24/06/2024 15:56

Only with either full length jeans/trousers or high top trainers/boots. If I wear cropped trousers and low top shoes I stick with trainer socks. And I wouldn’t be seen dead in white or black sports socks, however fashionable they are. Nice coloured striped ones or nothing for me. Anybody who could possibly mistake me for a Gen Z whatever I’ve got on my feet is not an authority on S&B.

NevermindNelson · 24/06/2024 15:56

If someone is judging me for the socks I’m wearing, then I’m judging them way harder.

The thing is now that the trainer sock generation are moving to ankle socks the kids will move back to trainer socks fast as anything.

When I was a teen it would have been fashion suicide to have any element of sock showing, or shoelace. It wasn't particularly comfortable!

I clearly remember the Japanese-inspired “thick socks and chunky heels” trend in about 2005…

I've always worn ankle socks as they don't slip down or give me blisters. I don't really care whether people think they look stupid - I'd rather be comfortable.

Me too.
What's all this with some folk describing others as old too?

Exactly this. Can’t wear ankle socks with a skirt or dress it will look awful but done with jeans!

SorrowsPrayers · 24/06/2024 16:04

My 27 year old son came around yesterday wearing these.....
Surely it a good look!

I uncoolly really like trainer socks, I think I'll just buy them until they stop making them. I generally wear full woolly style ones in winter but otherwise I like my trainer ones. I see it as practical rather than a style statement.

BingoMarieHeeler · 24/06/2024 16:04

Wow literally never heard the term ‘trainer liner’ before 🤢 for some reason that phrase turns my stomach 😂

But to answer your question no I still wear my trainer socks. It definitely is a generation identifier though!

Or do the ankle sock fold down, which I thought I invented and was the only dweeb to do such a thing. But apparently we all lived the same youth and all did the same thing.

Just worn ankle socks with a just above the knee denim skirt, can confirm I most definitely don't look under 10 or that I've just escaped from an institution. 😬😬😬

Allnewtometoo · 24/06/2024 16:08

@Alwaysthesun24 I can't picture that at all (old...) can we have a pic?

When I was a young un, to start with it was socks pushed down, then somehow it morphed into folding the sock back over your heel , making a trainer sock out if a normal ankle sock. And tucking your laces in.

@SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit

Where are you finding men's socks in 2 sizes? I can only find 6-11 but loads of men must have feet bigger than that.

M&S do mens socks in 2 sizes. DH has size 12 feet.
Next do some styles of women's socks in 2 sizes.

Myfluffyblanket · 24/06/2024 16:10

I bought bamboo trainer socks from Amazon . They have little gummy strips on the heel top and do not slip off my size seven oldlady feet . They wash well too.
