I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

Grin Skinny's went out of fashion almost a decade ago. I still have a pair that I occasionally wear though, esp. when wet.

However they make me feel like I have the word 'millennial' stamped on my forehead.

henlake7 · 15/06/2024 12:50

well, I was all ready to wear a brand new pair of wide legged cargo pants today but then I got back from my run like a drowned rat and had to swap them for my trusty parachute pants as they are more rain friendly!
Hoping that parachute pants are ok to wear because they are my go to!

When it comes to skinny/slim trousers I only have one pair....that Ive never worn!😁 When I was super fat I lived in wide legged jersey trousers and have only really discovered leggings a couple of years ago!

People have never stopped wearing them and the shops are full of them. They may not be the height of fashion, but they aren't as unfashionable as the fashionistas want us to believe.

Well of course they are still available. Almost any style of trousers/jeans are available regardless of whether they are currently on trend or not. You could say that hoodies aren't fashionable but people still wear them because they are comfortable and convenient, but this thread is about current trends.

Im not saying that there is anything wrong with wearing skinnys if you want to!

Any advice on what trainers will update my look?? I know Gazelles seem to be popular… but I fancied some chunky trainers rather than sneakers

Gazelle bold are chunky gazelles so maybe this would work for https://www.office.co.uk/view/product/officecatalog/2,20/4870288253055?cqqsrc=googleads&cqqcmp=16539118469&cqmed=pla&cqqnet=x&cqplt=gp&gaddsource=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8pO5xrehgMV9JlQBh0-tgGUEAQYDiABEgJO6vDD_BwE

I had a very trendy 22 year old at my house today wearing a hoodie, so I don’t think those are out of fashion. It’s more about what you wear it with and when.

And I have also seen fashionistas wearing skinny jeans in the last 10 years, wide legged is a much more recent trend.

New balance 530. Though i don’t understand what you mean by sneakers vs trainers. To me they’re the same thing but one is American? 😁🙈

Do you mean a bigger profile? Sneakers like gazelles are smaller, slimmer.

happytobemrsg · 16/06/2024 21:51

Ha sorry I blame DH. He calms the slimmer trainers (like gazelles) “sneakers” and the sort of trainers you’d wear to the gym as “proper trainers” 😂 I was after something chunky, like you’d wear to the gym but fashionable ones to wear with non-gym outfits (if that makes any sense)

Skinny's have been unfashionable for about a decade. In fact so long that they are sort if creeping back in.
But higher waisted this time

Thought that might be what you meant, definitely the new balance 530.

YouG0GlenCoco · 17/06/2024 16:42

I was very resistant to everyone saying skinnies were out as I lived in them and leggings, but I've now switched to bootcut/flared jeans and flared leggings in either black or a print. I actually feel they suit me better as I'm very straight up and down so they give my shape more balance, so I hope they stay around a while! Has to be fitted with a flare though, can't get on with wider leg and baggy styles.

What about midi skirts with a vest top or tshirt in summer? That was my previous go to with chunky dm style sandals or trainers. I still like and will wear that but am I going to look horribly dated?!

WayOutOfLine · 17/06/2024 17:43

The midi skirt seems to be around a lot still, I wouldn't be buying new midi small print flowery dresses but that's just my preference (not to!) as I think they are about to go out of style, a lot of young people are wearing wide-legged white or cream linen style trousers or skirts, white and beige stuff is in fashion, lots of denim skirts of the thinner longer variety (but these are hard to walk in!)

I'm wearing linen baggy trousers, but slim cut on the waist and hips and they are more flattering than I thought they would be.

I think Kate Moss could probably get away with skinnies, and Claudia Winkleman wears black ones with her more goth/biker/tweedy stuff in winter, but you'd have to style the hell out of them to look current, and I can't be arsed to do that.

HandsDown84 · 17/06/2024 18:11

I agree skinnies need styling. I was going to wear some black ones to a gig last week and while they would have looked ok in a wintery outfit with black Docs and a dark jacket a la Claudia Winkleman, I just could not make them work for a chilly spring evening outfit. I ended up in a dress.

I wore some really old Gazelles the other day and my son’s gf commented on my trendiness. They’re back in. Apparently.

They were back in for the last couple of years. Then they were replaced by Sambas. Then Nike took over.
Gazelles are my favourite though I wear everything.

Cattenberg · 18/06/2024 11:32

I had a pair of Adidas Sambas when I was 14, in the mid-90s.

What about those chunky Vans with the big white soles, or Converse? The place I live in isn’t exactly a fashion capital, but they seem popular here.

OrangeCrushes · 24/06/2024 16:47

Following. I am mid 40s and mostly surrounded by people older than I am. My recent purchase of wide legged pastel trousers has been adopted by my 70+ MIL!

Other way around. Sambas have been reigning supreme for a few years but Gazelles are now the cool kid on the block.

Cattenberg · 25/06/2024 22:35

Then how come I live in Converse city? Is this a sub-culture/ fashion tribe? Or were they fashionable five years ago perhaps?

HandsDown84 · 25/06/2024 23:20

I don't think Converse have really gone away since the early 2000s. I've got about 12 pairs. I think introducing the Lift platform sole gave them a new lease of life! Suddenly all the influencers were in white platform versions.

Cattenberg · 26/06/2024 15:03

Thank you. Trainers similar to these are also popular around here. I don’t know if they’re a major trend, but they take me straight back to 1998/1999, when some girls were wearing similar trainers to gigs, along with a short combat skirt, band T-shirt and a black cord necklace containing one large bead.

henlake7 · 26/06/2024 15:53

I think vans, converse and gazelles/sambas are all classic styles now that will probably never go completely out of fashion.
Unlike when I was young people dont seem so willing to give up comfort for trendiness! Alot of quite 'on trend' outfits seem to be finished off with comfy shoes these days.

Makes me very happy. I have wide feet and a weird gait meaning very flat comfy shoes are best. I'll happily live in trainers, baseball boots or tennis shoes!
Weather is too hot at the moment to worry too much though so Im going with my trusty 'fitted tee, maxi skirt and converse' combo.

IMO people dress in such a varied way thats its hard to look dated...although a couple of things do stand out to me.
Like 3/4 trousers, they really do seem to have an age bracket (esp if teemed with a ditsy print top).
Also white trainers, floral dress and denim jacket. I think you can do 2 out of 3 but if you complete the trifecta then you are telling everybody you are 30s-40s and about to pick the kids up from school (I mean its not a bad look but it feels done to death IYKWIM?).

HandsDown84 · 26/06/2024 16:05

Agree with this to an extent. Not all the time, but there is a particular outfit (especially on a day like today, where it's hit 30 in the SW) where you can tell the wearer is boiling, but has decided they're "too old" for shorts. When there is no such thing.

OrganicKombucha · 27/06/2024 04:18

Baby tee (sounds cringe I know but I think they suit me) + low rise flares / low rise wide leg jeans - honestly I think for jeans as long as you're not wearing skinnies, you're on trend. Seems like free for all now.

Crew socks over traditional leggings otherwise I wear flared leggings

Adidas Sambas (have been wearing since 2022 but it became on trend last year til now?)

Side parting since 2017 (not for trend but because I realised it looks better on me) but guess that's not on trend now. :P

Silver jewellery - the previous years' chunky gold jewellery trend never suited me as a cool toned person so glad silver is on its way in
