Why pick at spelling /grammar

Idontgetit33 · 22/06/2024 12:24

Why do quite a few people not understand dyslexia and/or learning difficulties.

I do not know how to use grammar. If it does happen my phone has probably done it for me.

I do not know the difference between too, to , of and off. I get confused with they're even basic words like and ,him etc I sound them in my head as I write them even though I know how to spell them. There are lots mistakes I do but I can't see them.

People can tell me /explain but I will forget pretty much right away.

So what I don't understand Is why do many not all but many people pull up peoples spelling and grammar or they think the thread Is fake because of bad spelling.

If I feel emotional/stressed/ upset it could be worse

It sometimes comes across like there an understanding of children with dyslexia. But as am adult people seem to think it disappears.

I think in many cases, it's a superiority complex that posters have. "Oh look, you put should of instead of should have, I'm so much better than you".

Now, 'of' instead of 'have' irritates the shit out of me, because it's the wrong word, not the right word spelled incorrectly but, I know what the person writing it means so there is no point bringing it up on a forum. Would I with my child? Yes, because I'm his primary teacher and he needs to know. But a member of MN putting it in their post isn't something I'm going to comment on.

Someone upthread said*:

"When I read ‘why don’t you say something to you’re mum?’ it makes no sense whatsoever. I have to go back and realise they mean ‘your mum’." *

This is total shit. Because clearly, she knows exactly what someone is trying to say there, they've just used the wrong word and it's obvious they have. They don't need to go back and 'realise' anything. It makes them feel superior.

UnpackingBooksFromBoxes · 23/06/2024 10:26

Not here but elsewhere I had corrected in the past (mainly loose instead of lose) but then I saw Jamie Oliver’s mother responding to a comment by someone criticising a spelling or grammatical mistake on Instagram he had made where she explained his dyslexia. It was an eye opener and I wouldn’t think of commenting to point out this type of mistake since reading it.

You can get people who are very academic but are not intelligent

This makes zero sense. If you're academic, you're definitely clever. You may not have common sense or good social skills or some other trait, but not being intelligent ain't it.

middlenglander · 23/06/2024 10:29

I don't get the rest bite part 😭 should it be restbite?

Words fail me. Is this a wind-up? I somehow can't quite believe you're for real.

It's a terrible rendering of respite.

Wuu · 23/06/2024 10:34

I didn’t know the rest bite thing either op.

You have just confused me further. I don't know why you feel you need to dig. Rather than just explain. Really no need for it .

Thank you.

When I hear people say it I do hear rest bite though. And since it was mentioned must be a common thing.

Rest bite, chester drawers, for all intensive purposes, damp squid, talking dribble

These are hilarious!

I was once having a text argument with an ex who was verging on abusive in his behaviour. I sent quite a long text outlining why his behaviour was unacceptable and he replied "I'm not even going to read all that, it's complete dribble".

That helped me to just block him and move on so it was very helpful 😂

Now I'm wondering have people said it wrong to me have they said rest bite and that's what I have heard . Or have they said rest spite and I have heard rest bite ... maybe its both 😅

It does appear to be a common thing, yes. I don’t know why. I guess it’s because people have never seen the word written down.

Not everyone with poor SPaG is dyslexic, some are lazy or don’t care to learn the rules. I find it annoying as an English teacher that my students are learning and picking up on common mistakes on social media.

On the pregnancy board, most posters use babies when they mean baby’s etc. Women and woman is another one that grinds my gears.

I don’t correct people though, as much as I would like to. Are you diagnosed as dyslexic?

If you click see all on ops posts you can read them all the posts, they’ve posted they have dyslexia and other learning difficulties.

I don't understand the lazy side of it though. Io I write babys or babies or woman or women . That's not saved me any time.

And yes . I did not go to maim stream school. I went to a school for people with learning difficulties.

Those examples would be laziness to learn (if not dyslexic). When people write ‘Iv’ instead of ‘I’ve’ that is lazy.

Nice bit of ableism.

Have you heard of Dunning-Kruger syndrome? (As you're such a fan of syndromes)

I might make it my afternoon's work to introduce the two of you.

Awful post. Maybe reread OP's posts, where she's eloquently described the reasons she finds this stuff tricky, and then think about what you've written here.

Lowest of the low.

Given its pretty restricted context, I think it's a) perfectly understandable that lots of people have (thankfully for them) never come across it so don't know how to spell it b) probably the worst "mistake" around for people to take the piss out of (again, given its context) Anybody (and it happens a lot on here) citing "rest bite" as a totally hilarious mistake made by someone really needs a long hard look at themselves c) purely linguistically, it's not an easy word to decode into writing from just hearing it.

Love rest bite. It makes so much sense, it's perfect. I vote we make it a correct term.

The best one I saw was on MN.

Someone said "a sex shawl" instead of asexual.

Lkjhgdsrtgbjjm · 23/06/2024 15:00

It's incorrect to say that people who use poor SPaG on online social media must be thick. It's simply not true.

So if someone is lazy when they are typing out a message on Mumsnet I still don't get why that's so annoying unless it renders a post incomprehensible. People are lazy about all sorts of things everyday.

What's it about poor SPaG on social media that makes people angry.
I think having good SPaG is important and I think everyone should be taught English properly in schools but if someone can't be arsed with that pesky apostrophe in "Ive" why would that actually matter.

Most of the time it isn't dyslexia/LD though, it's just lazy.
My averagely academic 12 year old with ADHD knows not to write Iv (rather than I've - that does make people sound really thick), can use the right they're/there/their.

Most things underline in red if they're not spelt correctly, so just just look up the correct spelling before posting.

Who cares if it’s lazy?! It’s just mumsnet not a PhD thesis.
