Why pick at spelling /grammar

Idontgetit33 · 22/06/2024 12:24

Why do quite a few people not understand dyslexia and/or learning difficulties.

I do not know how to use grammar. If it does happen my phone has probably done it for me.

I do not know the difference between too, to , of and off. I get confused with they're even basic words like and ,him etc I sound them in my head as I write them even though I know how to spell them. There are lots mistakes I do but I can't see them.

People can tell me /explain but I will forget pretty much right away.

So what I don't understand Is why do many not all but many people pull up peoples spelling and grammar or they think the thread Is fake because of bad spelling.

If I feel emotional/stressed/ upset it could be worse

It sometimes comes across like there an understanding of children with dyslexia. But as am adult people seem to think it disappears.

Genuinely interested, do any of the people on here who admit they have difficulties spelling and/or simply don't care, ever play Scrabble?

Why would anyone WANT to play Scrabble? It’s one of the world’s most boring games!

Noooo!! It's one of the best board games ever!

LonelySod · 24/06/2024 12:44

I doubt Richard Branson is that good at SPAG. Does that make him thick?

Caffeineneedednow · 24/06/2024 12:45

Wuu · 24/06/2024 12:26

couple of times years ago, it isn’t something I would choose to play as it’s not fun for me, I didn’t know if I’m putting down the correct spelling/if they’re even words.

I'm dyslexic and can't spell for shit but I can mostly do small words and I am really good a recognising patterns so ironically enough I am quite good at the game. I rarely have words longer then 4 letters but it doesn't improve my spelling.

No I hate it. It would make me feel embarrassed. And after the game I still would not spell any better.

How do you feel about lack of/incorrect punctuation?

Because not one of your posts on this thread has been correctly punctuated. Not one.

Just musing really how incorrect spelling and grammar is (blatantly, and written down for all to see) so important to you, when punctuation clearly isn't.

If that's the case, I'd really appreciate it if you would send me a message( so as not to clog up this thread) detailing all the errors and how they should be correctly punctuated, as I had no idea I'd made any.
Many thanks.

Nah, that's the easy way out for you, isn't it?
It's mainly commas, which don't seem to exist on your phone/keyboard, and which definitely aren't optional.

Just goes to show really that people in glass houses etc and our dear Saint Muphry are always, always on hand when needed.

I'd be a little wary of being so outspoken about other people's "poor" English in your shoes, that's all.

You can't go round criticising my punctuation when you're not prepared to explain where it's wrong. If you've taken the time to review every single one of my posts then you've got time to explain all my punctuation errors.

It's interesting that you have specially selected my posts for your comments about poor punctuation, and won't explain those errors when I've asked you to, yet according to you I shouldn't make generalised comments about poor spelling and grammar. At least apply the same rule to yourself as you have to me.

JC03745 · 24/06/2024 13:53

@ISeriouslyDoubtIt The other poster isn't your teacher! Why should she provide a run down of all your posts where you haven't used a comma, provide a corrections list for you?
If relevant, I haven't scrolled through all your posts BTW, just read the last few which were missing indeed punctuation. Still able to be understood though.

AllTheChaos · 24/06/2024 14:06

ASighWasMadeOfStone · 24/06/2024 11:37

Anybody using Wikipedia to support an argument hasn't got one.

Yes, it's archaic (most irregular past simple verbs are, that's why all new verbs have a regular past ending. But archaic doesn't equal wrong. The archaic forms remain in usage, and correct (David Crystal has an excellent article on usage v correctness) especially if part of fixed expressions. As any fule kno.

You remain wrong. Try a decent dictionary rather than Google.

And nobody is lauding poor SpaG. We are explaining why it can happen.

Edited

Molesworth, is that you?! I need to introduce my offspring to those books, I loved them when I was her age.

@ISeriouslyDoubtIt I love Scrabble. I’m actually not too bad at it either, I just use the dictionary a LOT. An actual massive paper one, in part so my DD can’t cheat 😂 It is slowly helping her spelling a bit, but I don’t think it will ever be that good.

If you and she are going to specifically criticise my posts, you could at least have the decency to explain where my errors are, otherwise what's the point of your criticism? Surely you criticise in order to aim help people improve?

That's why I criticise.

Or do you do it out of sheer nastiness because it somehow makes you feel superior and you have no intention of helping others improve?

Funny you should ask but I'm the current top player in my local scrabble league. I've a silver plate with my name on 😅 There are a few people who have been diagnosed as dyslexic at my club who are also strong players. Scrabble is more about tactics and maths than spelling. I've definitely lost games because of poor spelling but overall my tactics, word knowledge and maths make up for my shocking spelling. There have been many leading players who barely speak English. I've often played guys online from places like Malaysia who are incredible players. It feels like they are using anagram solvers but they aren't.
From the comfort of my living room I'm also a very strong Countdown player. I normally match or better the words the contestants on the tv get. I regularly get the conundrums almost instantaneously. However, I suspect, if I were actually on the show my nerves might get the better of me.

This is why it's stupid to assume people who can't spell and have poor English are 'thick'. I'm not thick.

I don't automatically know if it's lose or loose for example but I'd be surprised if you could beat me at scrabble.

BTW, I know there is a whole 'next tier' of scrabble players. I'm nowhere near their standard but I'm not doing badly for someone who got a 'D' grade three times in a row in GCSE English Language.

middlenglander · 24/06/2024 15:20

I don't automatically know if it's lose or loose for example

Think of the pronunciation: there is a difference when you say the words 'lose' and 'loose'. 'Loose' (not tight) is more like 'moose' or 'noose', so the 's' needs a double 'o' before it. Also think 'lose/lost' = you lose an 'o'.

SooKafatone · 24/06/2024 15:21

Don't be a looser

You clearly don't know the first rule of Mumsnet pedantry.

It's unpleasant to be unpleasant about people's SPaG.

It's unpleasant to make someone feel shit by saying that if you see they've made a mistake, then you consider them ignorant.

It's unpleasant to act like a superior being who knows so much about language when someone else is struggling.

But if anyone persists in doing the above, then the gloves are off when pointing out their English leaves a lot to be desired.

And, the thing is, it's always, always the case. Because people who are genuinely interested in language, and genuine knowledge a fair bit, would never want to humiliate somebody else. Either by pointing out their mistakes, or by inferring they have no excuse for not knowing stuff, or that they're ignorant.

It's just not very nice to get off on doing that to someone.

Except, obviously, when someone who's doing that is hoist by their own petard. Then they deserve it. Because they finally understand why what they've been so happy to do, is so deeply nasty.

So, no. I'm not going to teach you how to punctuate correctly. But hopefully, now that you know you're less than perfect yourself, maybe you'll hold off with the mocking of other people.

ASighWasMadeOfStone · 24/06/2024 15:31

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 23/06/2024 16:56

When I see poor grammar and spelling it jumps right out at me and detracts from what the poster is trying to say. I admit that when I see it I do tend to value the poster's opinion less.

I understand that there can be reasons for poor SPAG and I have sometimes seen posters explaining in their OP that they have difficulties or English isn't their first language etc which is helpful to the reader.

However other posters make excuses saying it simply doesn't matter, they can't be bothered, they're lazy or it's only a chat forum etc. When these posters are in their work environment or required to write a letter or email to anyone other than their friends, do they suddenly start spelling words correctly and using good grammar or do they approach all aspects of written communication with the same slack attitude they show on this forum?

This is you helping, is it?

I'd call that judging, insulting, demeaning, humiliating, but I'd struggle with the helping bit tbh.

SeeThatOne · 24/06/2024 17:42

@middlenglander
Also think 'lose/lost' = you lose an 'o'

I can't remember hearing that trick before. I find them very useful.

blablausername · 24/06/2024 20:38

@Idontgetit33
If you are still reading the thread I would say this.
Try to think of things in this way. You have your own set of characteristics, which are unique to you as does every single person on this thread.

If a poster posts a written mistake and it is read by 100 people there could be:

10 who don't notice the mistake

50 who notice but makes no difference to them because they recognise the mistake but know the correct way and how to use it

10 who are weak spellers who will be unsure next time they use the word after seeing it written incorrectly

5 who notice but find it irritating so will leave the thread

5 who will notice and have to stop and repeat the correct version in their minds before continuing reading

5 who feel compelled to point out the mistake, not because they want to make the other person feel bad, but because they would like to help but the mistake is making them uneasy inside and they can't help till it is resolved
5 who look down on people who have difficulty with spag and enjoy pointing it out.

We can't control the reaction of the people who read our posts and we shouldn't attempt to. Try just to accept that some people find the things we do irritating, and whether we can help them or not makes no difference. It's normal to not like it when people find us or the things we do irritating, but that's life.
I know that I sometimes annoy people with my behaviour ( ND), but other people also annoy me by thinking that everyone "should " behave in a certain way and at a certain pace.
