Anyone else think there might be something strange about the 19yr old disappearance in Tenerife?

I get that kids do foolish things, like travelling at night with 2 strangers.

But if he was seen at the new accommodation around 8am, and again walking briskly along the road some time “later”, how could he have needed to make a call at 8.30am saying he was lost, had no phone charge and needed water? He would have only just left the accommodation so definitely wouldn’t need water. And why not send your gps or what three words location then?

He’s clearly a nasty piece of work as anyone who googles his name will know. However, being part of a gang who split someone’s head open for the lolz doesn’t preclude him from also being a teenager who’s probably got too pissed/off his face at a festival, got dehydrated and now, unfortunately for him, come to grief. I can’t imagine it’ll be a positive outcome now but I do find his mum’s talk of her “beautiful boy, a good looking lad” to be interesting, not to mention his mate Lucy who won’t face the camera like some kind of kingpin crim.

NoMoreFalafelForYou · 22/06/2024 11:27

Anyway I can’t get too worked up about this. He sounds like a waste of space and his family and friends just awful. I guess any death is objectively a tragedy and I’m sure upsetting for the family but, meh, I don’t really care about the fate of violent unrepentant thugs

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe As I said above, discussing missing people cases, keeps their name at the forefront and raises awareness!!! Calling op names is what is disgraceful. Grow up!

This. Teenagers making stupid decisions. We've all (most of us) been there.

You forget some MNers only have a thimbleful of wine when out.

Funny that a lot of my mates, normal young people in their 20s from naice families, professionals too, regularly went clubbing with all that that entailed in London in 90s/00s. Compared to the vast majority of MNers.

Zone2NorthLondon · 22/06/2024 11:39

An unfortunate random event which is being over scrutinised by ghouls and conspiracy theorists
in all likelihood he got disorientated, potentially hurt, dehydrated

Zone2NorthLondon · 22/06/2024 11:46

All this he’s a bad un he is a criminal. It’s all very illiberal.. yes he’s been convicted of of violent crime and that was reprehensible however that does not mean society completely disregard individual because they’ve criminal past.
Should authorities look for him,yes absolutely
on basis of past criminality should he be cast aside, tough luck & all that.No
the measure of a compassionate and safe society is how we deal with criminality & dysfunction. He committed a reprehensible act but we as a society now need to support him at a time he needs it

OhHelloMiss · 22/06/2024 11:49

@Zone2NorthLondon

But there you go, speculating yourself 😂

MotherofChaosandDestruction · 22/06/2024 11:52

The most likely answer is that he was still high and decided to walk after missing a bus and he's become so dehydrated with heat stroke. However, there is something fishy with his 'friend' Lucy and wouldn't be surprised with criminal activity. Some of the conspiracy theories are a bit far fetched though.

WetherspoonsSnob · 22/06/2024 11:52

Few questions, why tf would you need ten's of thousands of pounds from the great British public in the form of a GFM crowdfunder?

What can £30,000 get you that assistance from both the Foreign Office and Guardia Civil can't??

It was originally a £10k target, why wasn't that a great deal more than enough , why was the target tripled in size and what on Earth do they want 30 grand for?????

They haven't even bothered to tell us what its all going towards on the GFM description

Well the authorities are looking for him aren’t they? Nobody has said they shouldn’t. I just don’t know why people who don’t know him are devastated about it or why people are contributing money to the gofundme started by his awful friend. On the other hand, I was invested and upset about Michael Mosley who, while I didn’t know him, seemed like a genuinely lovely man and did a lot of good in the world.

MidnightPatrol · 22/06/2024 11:56

@WetherspoonsSnob no horse in this race, but as to why they might want £30k (being kind rather than suspicious).

I don’t think they are well off people. Affording to get to Tenerife / pay for accommodation / not work for a few weeks all does add up for a few people.

hastalav · 22/06/2024 11:58

I wonder will the proposed ETIAS (EU Esta that will apply to UK) identify and stop convicted UK criminals from entering the EU when it is implemented? That would be relevant to this individual.

If so, now that's a REAL Brexit bonus.

MightyDoctor · 22/06/2024 12:01

What is his background then? That keeps popping up.

I also just assumed that the go fund me was there to cover Mum's flights and accommodation, which is fair enough.

Am I being naive?!

I went to Tenerife with my friend, both of us just 18. She was staying out late.
I headed back to hotel, sat for 2 hours in the lobby worried SICK waiting for her.
Well somehow, she'd decided to go back, took a quicker route and was fast asleep in the room! I didn't think to check.

They really don’t need to be there other than maybe his mum. Fifteen of his friends and extended family do not need to fly out and join in any searches. Stay at home.

Plus the girl who started the fundraiser and will be pocketing it has been on various foreign trips in the past year (although that might well be for criminal purposes).

WetherspoonsSnob · 22/06/2024 12:08

Exactly plus flights are pretty cheap to get to Tenerife- well under £100 for most I've looked at (easyjet, ryanair etc..). £50-£60 region

MightyDoctor · 22/06/2024 12:10

Oh. I've just googled him.

My opinion has changed of the angelic looking lad.

Huh.

I think if it was your family member missing, you might also want to go and help when it was clear the authorities couldn’t find him.

Is this situation dodgy? Who knows. Possibly.

I do get a strong undercurrent of him and his family being judged due to their background / his convictions etc.

It’s actually slightly alarming to see how people’s prejudices impact their perspective on what is most likely just a lad whose partied a bit too hard and met an unfortunate accident - vs when say Michael Moseley went missing.

They seem to have been labelled ‘undeserving’ (to use a Victorian expression), and are treated with an astonishing amount of suspicion given we know very little about them or the situation.

SallyWD · 22/06/2024 12:17

A lot of people are keen to say how they couldn't care less about him. He's a violent thug who takes drugs so supposedly deserves whatever's happened.
Fine, you're entitled to your opinions. However, in the case of very young people I like to give them the benefit of the doubt. He's basically still a kid, his brain isn't fully developed. Yes he was in a gang who attacked that man (also a criminal apparently) but Jay Slater got a lesser sentence compared to some of the others so presumably he wasn't the one who hacked into the skull with a machete.
Also if teenagers are behaving badly I don't like to dismiss them as "bad" but look at why they're behaving badly. Disfunctional families, violent upbringing, who knows?
At 19 there's every chance he could have turned his life around and grown up to be a decent man (equally, maybe he wouldn't have) but it seems that many people have completely written off a 19 year old kid and stated his life is pretty much worth nothing.

Batchknb · 22/06/2024 12:18

And this is why. Witch hunt thread where you sound deranged deciding who is and isn’t worthy of search and rescue. Disgusting.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 22/06/2024 12:20

Anyone contributing to the GFM is at best very naive I’m afraid. As others have said, flights to Tenerife are cheap as chips, and really only the mum and a supporter for her need to be there. I’m afraid I cannot waste too much sympathy on a violent thug. It’s a sad outcome if he’s died of course. Maybe he would have gone on to achieve great, philanthropic things. Maybe not. Maybe he’s coming down from a massive bender. None of us knows but I fail to see the need for £30K to be raised 🤷‍♀️

DontBiteTheCat · 22/06/2024 12:21

He was tried in a British court and sentenced accordingly by a judge. He paid his debt to society, whether you agree that the payment was large enough is by the by, the justice system made the decision.

I’ve seen some awful comments on other threads, one of them was a poster hoping he was “pushing up daisies”. There have been many derogatory comments made towards him, his family and their class.

It says an awful lot about the people making the comments. Absolutely vile individuals.

People are probably very sick of violent little criminals, who think they can harm other people and then laugh about it.

Not in the least speculative.
reading thread I’m respond to the hes a bad un, tough luck type posts
Have no idea what’s happens other than what is reported by all agencie which is Lost. Disorientated. No water. No phone. These are accepted factors

Feelsodrained · 22/06/2024 12:29

Well anyone who is concerned that he’s not getting treated right, it seems like the Tenerife police (the ones that were slammed by his friends and family for not even speaking English) are pulling out all the stops and have been searching tirelessly for him for days with dogs and a large team. There’s genuinely no point using a helicopter - there’s woodland around the mountain - I have been there. It’s probably been a cost of several millions to the Spanish public purse.

And yeah sure he could have turned his life around. Him laughing in court doesn’t give me much hope though.
