Anyone else think there might be something strange about the 19yr old disappearance in Tenerife?

I get that kids do foolish things, like travelling at night with 2 strangers.

But if he was seen at the new accommodation around 8am, and again walking briskly along the road some time “later”, how could he have needed to make a call at 8.30am saying he was lost, had no phone charge and needed water? He would have only just left the accommodation so definitely wouldn’t need water. And why not send your gps or what three words location then?

I laugh at conspiracy theories but the way his friend reported him missing does not add up. Nobody would immediately call police straight after putting phone down unless it was a child who was lost. Unless they knew more had gone on.

Really?

If your friend called you to say they were lost in a foreign country, needed water and had almost no phone battery left you wouldn’t call the police? I would.

You're a disgrace, OP. What useful thing do you think you're doing? Just idly gossiping and speculating. Ugh.

I wish MNHQ would take these awful threads down as soon as they 'pop up'.

I think his criminal past (google his name and the word machete) is making many people think twice. Plus the really piss poor decision making.

Underneath it all he probably has stupidly wandered off and got lost/fallen.

I can see why there is speculation though, given his background.

I agree with this. Sadly I think he got lost and then due to the mix of drugs and heat got dehydrated and disorientated and has collapsed or fallen somewhere.

I hope somehow he is Ok though even if the chances are slim.

The internet abounds with theories from Poundland Bergeracs on this one.

The lad has a dodgy past, there are drugs involved - supply thereof. He's made some people high up in the supply of said drugs very unhappy, and has now disappeared. This will probably end as these things usually do.

Yea that Poundland theory got started because someone posted a load of fantasy about drug bag drops and 19 year olds making £25k a month (slinging £40 bags of coke to tourists, sure sure), and people are believing it because he said he wasnt lying 🙄

No I honestly wouldn't, I would probably head up there myself first. Did you listen to the interview with her it was really bizarre, I've only just heard it she apparently was talking about helicopters to the police immediately that is odd!

Everyone needs to stop being armchair detectives.

Batchknb · 22/06/2024 10:24

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe I agree. I volunteer with missing person’s charities and the victims families say they read and get told this stuff and it’s an extra knife in the heart.

Mumsnet shouldn’t be allowing this stuff as if it ever did turn criminal they’d get in trouble for not moderating speculation.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 22/06/2024 10:37

People can tend to do daft things when they’ve got their holiday head on.
I wrote this on the MM thread — DH and I lived for just over a year on a Greek island, two very hot, dry summers. Rescuers were called out to people who’d decided they could climb a mountain, a woman who decided to walk over the rocky terrain in flip flops ( she was lucky, spotted and pulled out from between rocks where she’d slipped and helicoptered to hospital.) People who hired boats never having handled a boat in their lives but thought it’d be like driving a car. And these were just the British tourists we heard about, there were probably lots more.
Add in alcohol and possibly drugs and I can see an 11 hour walk might seem like a good idea.

Yeah I agree with this. I remember walking 5 miles after a party, across the countryside at 5 am with a friend. No idea if we were going in the right direction and all we had with us was half a bag of Doritos and a bottle of cider 🙄

We were lucky and basically stumbled on where we needed to be but it obviously could have ended quite differently. People do stupid stuff all the time. I'm not sure there's much more to this than went back for after party, woke up with a bit of the terrors and just wanted to get home. Probably thought of he started walking he'd get a bus eventually.

I agree, I missed a boat back to some remote accomodation once on holiday and we walked back round the coast walking over massive rocks rocks wearing just flip flops, ridiculous but we lived, it could’ve ended up very badly.

I think he’s woke up feeling really rough, or possibly not even slept, obviously he wasn’t thinking straight but I don’t think there’s anything sinister.

I think some of the more wild conspiracy theories are silly and time wasting.

But… costa del crime and all that.. seen too much Sexy Beast and Auf Wiedersehen pet with the Spanish episodes. 🤣

As someone who went to quite a lot of parties when I was younger… tbh his behaviour sounds pretty normal.

Festival with his mates, goes back to someone’s to keep the party going, decides he needs to leave in the morning, hasn’t been asleep for 24+ hours and has taken some eerrr… stuff.

Pretty normal night out IMO.

This. Teenagers making stupid decisions. We've all (most of us) been there.

It’s not odd really, I’d say he was hungover, still dosed up on whatever drugs he might have taken and was likely hungry, dehydrated before he even left. All of this along with being young, inexperienced with extreme heat/ hiking will effect judgement. He probably went back to the house to continue partying. He was seen leaving the property by another neighbour so he definitely left. I’d imagine that the reason he couldn’t stay on a main road where he could ask people for help etc was likely to do with the main road being more suitable for cars and not pedestrians so he might have turned off onto a lesser known path. It’s very sad. A pity he didn’t just turn back and wait until 10am for the bus to come. Also a pity that no other hikers saw him as it’s supposed to be a popular area.

I've no idea if MNHQ would 'get into trouble' (in fact, I doubt it).

I do think there has been a decided shift in the quality and tone of moderation over this past 6 months especially, however.

It was fantasy made up by a troll getting their kicks knowing some gullible fools would believe it because the poster said "I'm not lying"

Southlondoner88 · 22/06/2024 11:13

Also to add, people do stupid things all of the time. Only a few years ago my husband and I, two adults who have hiked before, went for a long walk in a nature reserve in Arizona in 46 degree heat with one bottle of water and minimal snacks. We weren’t far from busy roads but still, either one of could have easily fainted and hurt ourselves badly. Sometimes being on holiday gives you an adventurous , carefree feeling and it can cloud your judgement.

Nouvellenovel · 22/06/2024 11:14

His friend Lucy has apparently criticised the Spanish police efforts so far and added ‘they don’t even speak English.’
And to think these people get to vote in an election.

I hope the lad is safe though.

I hope you won’t have to be a parent to a teenager being hit in the head with an axe and machete. He belongs in prison.

Doveyouknow · 22/06/2024 11:15

I don't really understand the conspiracy theories around this. He was probably still a bit drunk / high and made a stupid decision to walk and got lost. Most of us have made stupid decisions as teenagers but were lucky enough to get away with it.

Chenecinquantecinq · 22/06/2024 11:18

Interestingly it’s not hot at that altitude and there’s moisture/water. The area he was last pinged in has been c17c apparently. It gets warmer lower down. It’s not Michael Mosley situation in the sense his survival chances are much higher especially given his young age.

So you have reported it, fine, yet still keep commenting which means it keeps being bumped onto the "active" threads??

Were you missing when the "logic gene" was handed out 😂

50shadedofmagnolia · 22/06/2024 11:22

Couldn't personally give a hoot about him 🤷‍♀️
If he had been serving a sentence for the serious offence he took part in prior to his holiday he wouldn't be missing 🤷‍♀️
Now onto better news it's finally sunny ☀️

EnglishBluebell · 22/06/2024 11:25

CalicoPusscat · 22/06/2024 08:30

Don't think it helps speculating.

Hopefully he will be located soon.

I disagree. Speculating (to a point) keeps his name out there and increases awareness which in turn, increases the likelihood of finding him. As you know, a LOT of British people holiday in Tenerife.
There was a case in the US where a missing young woman was found by YouTubers, in an extremely remote area. Another case, where a long term missing man's remains were found by a TikToker. In both of these instances, they were only looking as a result of all the media attention and people speculating & discussing each case within Facebook groups set up for each individual case.
Obviously people claiming unconfirmed things as FACTS or just plain lying, is not helpful at all. But most people are just discussing it and that helps the case tremendously
