Some of them can’t cope. My stepdaughter worked in ITU throughout 2020. A very talented ITU specialist nurse is now writing policies. Such a waste because months of seeing every patient leave in a body bag broke her. You have to be incredibly tough to survive the front line of emergency medicine now.

Yes.
Sadly, those who aren't coping are still on the front line and patients are suffering:(

Staff seem utterly blase ime. Just total lack of compassion

Maybe that's how they cope?

Not mine, the AHPs i know, do all they can to advocate for their patients.

But what can they do if there are not enough Doctors and Staff nurses?

Plymouth nhs Uni trust does all it can to keep people out of AE, they've a emg crisis team and have just launched a pilot to see stroke patients discharged (but still needing extensive rehab) within 36 hours, this will reduce people going back in with another Stroke, atm its 3 months.

But whats hindering them isn't money, its staff, people are leaving, going into private sector or abroad.

The management, that get such a kicking on here, are being very imaginative in keeping people out of hospital but they simply have not got the staff.....

One particular AHP i know is constantly stressed out, she simply cannot do her job to the standard she wants to, after getting a promotion is now paying out large amounts of student loan, she is applying to work in a private setting.... what a waste.

We need the Tories out and Lab to try and rebuild the NHS.

Another recent NHS experience. An elderly relative collapsed early evening and his wife (carer) phoned 999.

Told no ambulances available and not to take him to local A&E independently as they were only accepting stroke patients.

An ambulance arrived the following afternoon and he died soon after his arrival at A&E.

So sorry @SippingDownRakiAndReadingMaynardKeynes I was utterly dismayed by my experience and saw things I can't forget. It's why I'm so adamant about social care being key in how we move forward because a lot of the elderly there were not in the best place for them. I also had to drive myself to A&E the first time after being correctly diagnosed at a walk in, only to have to drive myself home again, still ill and in pain 20 hours later.

I've - sadly - visited a&e many times over the last decade with a frail family member.

The difference since brexshit is SO marked.

Heartbreaking.

But the architects of brexshit won't be sat in their own faeces in a&e anytime soon.

Yep my DD told me the numbers of EU healthcare staff who left after Brexit was staggering.

Always poo poo'ed by the brexitiers though.

I hope the 'Express headline today that Starmer will take us back into the EU via the backdoor is true.

Yes, Sunak, Bojo et al just pay for private treatment and even if forced to use NHS will bypass the chaos.

I agree...
It's why I voted Labour, despite my concerns
But my lived experience does not match yours and my county have no such "plans" at our hospitals

I found out this morning our only local pharmacy is going to close.

Fuck knows what we'll do 🤷

Yep.
It's very stark.
I hope so too :(

This is terrifying and as well as putting patients at risk, it must take a toll on staff.

I attended A&E recently and this is spot on. It was dangerous.

user8800 · 24/06/2024 14:28

I genuinely think I have a form of ptsd from our experiences 2 years ago...

I was begging nurses for pain relief... begging.

The receptionist shouted at an elderly lady who was crying in pain. She then wet herself and got shouted at again. I told the nurse I was complaining to pals about this.

My family member was keening in pain and rocking back and forth, and they just ignored us.

Pals said, " we need to speak to your family member, but they are far too ill atm"!!! I know!!!!!!

They nearly died.

Yes, me too. I have quite a phobia of having to go in again and am really struggling to trust HCP since nearly dying. I think that's a secondary impact that is also making people wait longer before attending. I really didn't want to die on the floor. I actually remember thinking that if I crashed on the way home at least they would probably treat me and scan me properly Confused

Yes.
My family member is very, very scared of being in hospital now

countrygirl99 · 24/06/2024 14:46

My dad was a frequent visitor to a&e 2020/2021. He was very frail, nearly blind and hard of hearing and in his mid 90s. Covid regs meant we couldn't go to him. On one occasion my brother was called to collect him late one evening after he had been taken in the day before. They had lost his shoes and one hearing aid and hos clothes stank of dried urine as he had been unable to get to the toilet and his bell went unanswered. No one told my brother or he could have brought him clean clothes and some shoes. Brother got shouted at for bringing the car right to the door for dad, apparently he was expected to walk to the car park at 11pm barefoot. That one got short shrift.

Didn't Heaton Harris write to every university asking for the names of anyone lecturing on Brexit and copies of their course material. He was described as McCarthyite and sinister by LSE.

DHH got his staff to do that. It doesn't bode well that that was his focus rather than concentrate on getting a good deal for importers and exporters.

So much for accountability and responsibility.

Such awful experiences from posters here and I'll be watching Channel 4 tonight.

Thankfully and luckily I have had the opposite regarding family members and relatives, but I would still hate to have to go to A&E.

placemats · 24/06/2024 15:37

Btw both sisters have good private health care schemes, but when it cames to an emergency they had no choice but go to the NHS.

Did anyone listen to Chris Heaton-Harris on R4today. Apparently it was a car crash. Will need to check catch up.

Yes it was. I was going to post after to see if anyone heard it.

Not a good start to my working day listening to that on my commute!

A couple of older relatives have been admitted to A and E recently, sent there by their GPs as emergencies. 36 hours on a trolley is the record so far. They say the HCPs are spread so thinly but doing their utmost to help everyone. Many are locums/agency staff (have this from another source) which is costing an absolute bloody fortune. Everyone is walking a tightrope to keep people alive, that’s not an exaggeration. There has to be a better way and it starts with funding, but that funding needs to be applied differently to the way it currently is I.e. a stable workforce that you aren’t paying Agency rates for!
We have a ‘Virtual Ward’ scheme operating and it works extremely well to keep people from returning to A and E unless their condition worsens unavoidably.
