19 year old missing.

I haven't seen any posts on this although I may have missed it.

A 19 year old boy has gone missing while on holiday with friends in Tenerife. No phone battery and has not been heard from since 8am yesterday.

I cannot stop thinking about him and his family. I have a son the same age who was due to go abroad with his friends for the first time last week but plans were cancelled last minute and now I feel like I never want him to go anywhere!

I'm not sure the point in me posting this as no one will know what has happened, I guess I just can't help thinking what if he was my son?

I am praying he is okay. My heart absolutely breaks for his Mum who has traveled there this morning.

No, the app locates you and gives you the words for where you are.

Oh ok. I downloaded it but had to put my address in. I’ll look again.

Has this boy murdered someone? I saw a post where his victim was as asking for everyone to help look for him or is that wrong?

Blueuggboots · 22/06/2024 04:54

@Chick3216 - he's gone missing. Not murdered someone.

I asked on the thread that got deleted about the sniffer dogs.

Anyone have any knowledge on them?

The police have access to Jay's belongings which the dogs can smell and they have an eye witness saying she saw Jay walking up a road. Could the snigger dogs pick up his scent from that road? Is that possible for them to do?

novocaine4thesoul · 22/06/2024 05:20

Sorry to ignore all of the traffic about the missing lad, Just on the what3words front - it is excellent. If your child or adult has downloaded the free app, they simply go into it regardless of wherever they are in the world and press on share, choose their messaging app of choice (like whatsapp) and send it (they can add a message if they want to like "pick me up here at 5" and press send. You get the message, and you know within 3 metres where they are / were at that precise time - every location in the world is unique. It is 3 clicks, and if phone battery is an issue, or they feel in danger, it is a lot easier than trying to explain where they are (especially if they don't actually know where they are - which is actually the main problem). It is not foolproof - if they have no signal, no credit on phone or wifi, phone battery is dead, then it isn't going to work - BUT lots of people DO have the app so they could ask another. We've used it in the wilds when out with groups of young people walking and although phone reception has been troublesome (so we have gone to trackers) it is pretty good and accurate. The main thing though is you have to (on both sides) give it a few benign tries first to make sure you understand how it works, so that if you ever need it, you do remember how to use it. If you have kids that refuse the "find my iphone" stuff, but you want something that they can resort to in an emergency with just a few clicks, it is pretty good. Hope this helps. x

Yes, and they’ve had dogs out so I suspect they would’ve tried.
However, scents can easily and quickly become contaminated by foot traffic, other animals and weather so it’s not fail safe. I’m also not sure how viable it is this long after the event - my only experience has been minutes after the person they’re tracking has been there.

I asked on the thread that got deleted about the sniffer dogs.

Why are you asking this?

I asked on the thread that got deleted about the sniffer dogs.

Why are you asking this?

Because I was under the impression that sniffer dogs are highly successful. I washed a video about Bloodhounds not that long ago and was amazed at how good they are.

I have no idea what breed of dogs the Tenerife police use and if the dogs have been beneficial in helping with the search doe Jay.

I read there are no rivers or streams in the area he was last seen in, so the dogs may have been able to detect his scent (from personal belongings).

I asked so that anyone more knowledgeable about dogs used in searches for people could comment on the effectiveness of using them.

Hewlet · 22/06/2024 05:50

So, don’t you think the experts will have also heard about sniffer dogs and considered their use?

Apologies for the stupid question but what’s the advantage of this over sending someone a location pin on google maps?

Of course the experts/police know! 🙄😂

I'm asking about the sniffer dogs here so that anyone who does know about dogs being used in searches for missing people can tell me more!

When you google it only brings up success stories.

If he murdered someone his victim would have a hard time posting anything. He was involved in seriously assaulting someone about 3 years ago. Very unlikely to be connected to his disapearance.

I think because you only use it in emergencies, other than, like the poster recommended, when you practice it. So if your child sends it to you you know it’s a genuine emergency they don’t just want a lift home. I think the emergency services also can use it to find where you are.

That poor boy. He's lucky those thugs didn't kill him.

“That poor boy “ is also a thug who has done bad things to other teens.

These aren’t “decent wholesome lads.”

Small gang mentality of dealing violence speeding recklessly endangering the general public.

What3Words has a number of shortcomings that are likely to trip people up in an emergency.

  • A foreign emergency operator has probably never heard of it
  • It is not homophone resistant
  • Does it even work without mobile data services, that could be case if your outside your mobile operator area?

The poor boy who was attacked is also a thug who has served time in prison. None of these things are relevant to the fact this young boy is missing and the boy who was attacked has asked people to stop using his name like this, and points to the fact the lad is missing and that’s what matters right now. He’s clearly got more compassion than many who seem to think it now doesn’t matter if he’s found or not as he’s got a criminal record

Compassion is one potential explanation for why he wrote what he did. Of multiple.

Sorry? If he murdered someone the victim would not be able to speak beyond the grave.

He and 7 other lads were found guilty of beating someone up causing quite significant. Injury. In the dock they were all unrepentant and larking around.

But this isn’t a tv programme. Don’t you feel uncomfortable treating it as though it is?
This kind of behaviour pre-internet used to be referred to as “ghoulish”.

@Hewlet - Why are you being so snarky? There are different types of sniffer dogs - drugs, mountain rescue, earthquake rescue. I think there may be some trained in finding cadavers rather than live humans.

The rescue dogs are trained to find humans, any human, in a certain terrain, but not by tracing the scent of a specific individual, which is what @BabyBobs was asking about.

I don't know how common tracking dogs are. In fact I don't think I've seen examples of them outside of cartoons or TV drama.

Young boy? He’s a young man 😂

Zonder · 22/06/2024 08:34

There's a Go Fund Me to raise money to get him home, if anyone needs an outlet for their compassion. Although I'm not sure how the £25k raised so far will bring him home if they don't know where he is.
