19 year old missing.

I haven't seen any posts on this although I may have missed it.

A 19 year old boy has gone missing while on holiday with friends in Tenerife. No phone battery and has not been heard from since 8am yesterday.

I cannot stop thinking about him and his family. I have a son the same age who was due to go abroad with his friends for the first time last week but plans were cancelled last minute and now I feel like I never want him to go anywhere!

I'm not sure the point in me posting this as no one will know what has happened, I guess I just can't help thinking what if he was my son?

I am praying he is okay. My heart absolutely breaks for his Mum who has traveled there this morning.

Has nothing like this ever happened on a funding site?

If it's not explained what it will be used
for and people still donate how can people moan?

So how does that work? Say the worst happens and they have to repatriate a body. Say that costs £10,000 (no idea of actual costs). How do you decide whose money is used for that and who gets their money back?

I looked this up, because I'm a ghoul. Around £6k for a body, £2k for ashes. Obvs they might want to buy a flashy coffin and have a big funeral - very flashy and very big, with that amount of money!

I feel really sorry for the local police. They've had some good wins against international trafficking gangs lately; now they're all chasing a lost English teenager and fending off tourist 'helpers'. Hope their eye-rolling game's up to scratch.

Blouson · 25/06/2024 18:02

@Garlicker Why is Tenerife such a hotbed of drugs and crime? It was awful 30 years ago when I last went and it seems no better today.

Garlicker · 25/06/2024 18:16

@Blouson - it's intensified. A lot. It's simply due to the islands' geographical position. Perfect for transferring merchandise between South America, North Africa and Europe. Despite being physically African, they're part of Spain so it's a very easy way to get stuff into EU countries.

Like most heavy-duty crime, it'd go past your average bod but leaks out locally, via weed shops and low-level distributors like Lucy.

I’ll go there. I’ve now seen 2 interviews with the mum and in both her body language was full of “tells” that signify someone’s probably lying.
I think the teenagers saw the Michael Mosley situation and stupidly thought it was an easy way to make a few quid. The fact the female friend started the gfm lines up with that. Quite possibly the mum knew nothing about it at first, but when seeing how distraught she was, the friend told her the truth. Mum then panics that her boy will go to prison for it (especially as he’s not squeaky clean) so carries it on. Now they’re all trapped in it.

Now mum probably is genuinely worried as she doesn’t know how he’s going to “reappear” without questions. Probably why she came up with the kidnap scenario as well.

What's your theory on where he is now and how did he get there?

Could you not put ashes in normal home luggage? I'm surprised there would be such a high extra cost, people who are going to scatter ashes abroad dont pay that do they?

Why not one of the smaller Canary Islands though? Ive never felt as uneasy abroad as Tenerife. The hotel robberies didnt help and handbag thieves were everywhere. Police didnt seem to care too much and just wearily pointed us all to the British Embassy. Felt very much like organiised crime.

NO! You need licenses and things to dispose of human remains.

I suppose people have smuggled loved ones' ashes sometimes ... but they shouldn't!

FloofyBird · 25/06/2024 18:34

@DancingLions something about his mum reminded me of Karen Matthew's and her body language, I think maybe the slight upward curve of the lips making it look like they're almost smiling.

I go to Tenerife every other year, and apart from the odd smell of a spliff I've never seen or sensed anything like this! We always stay in the north though, is the south totally different?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/06/2024 19:25

Yes, many countries carry human ashes in hand baggage if that's what you meant, @BarcardiWithGadaffia, including Spain and the UK - though documentation such as death certificate and cremation certificates need to be kept available and obviously they need to be in a suitable container

Well. This thread went well. And after all the mouthing off it seems the OP had second thoughts and slowly sidled away. Still heartbroken and not coping @DontBiteTheCat?

I have a family so strangely enough don't live my life on mumsnet, hence why I difficult I found it difficult hearing about this missing boy when I posted. Thank you for thinking of me though with your continued unpleasantness.

This thread has been interesting and there has been much media coverage since. I stick by I feel for everyone involved and I won't give my own 2 cents as I've no idea.

@TakeOnFlea I sincerely hope you manage to find a hobby that doesn't include making digs and being sarcastic to strangers. PM me any time if you need someone to talk to.

I've been wondering this. We were considering going for a week but after hearing about all the crime/drugs/murder I really don't fancy it now!!!

DancingLions · 25/06/2024 20:22

@BarcardiWithGadaffia
There's probably a ton of places you can hide there. Of course I doubt they thought it through thoroughly and there's also a possibility he has got into trouble somewhere. He would have needed supplies for the several days it's been now. Quite possibly the plan has gone wrong. Doesn't mean there wasn't one in the first place.

@FloofyBird
Yes I remember watching a documentary on Karen Matthews and a body language expert pointed out all the indicators of her lying and they're exactly the same as in this case. This is why so many people have made the comparison.

The police won't make public their theories at this stage. I'm not sure any of us at the time could comprehend what Karen Matthews did. But she did it and the police realised very early on. And she did it for money. These are people who clearly aren't well off. 30k is a huge amount of money to them. The missing lad is no stranger to breaking the law. Of course I am only speculating because I don't know. But it's not inconceivable.

Gawd, no thanks. The simpering would finish me off.

I stand by what I said on both threads, but this one in particular. That it's ghoulish to start thread after thread about someone else's possible tragedy, making it all about yourself and your "heartbreak". Ignoring the fact that the families have asked that you don't because somehow you're more important than them.

Funny how you grief thief types suddenly managed to sleep at night when you found out his past behaviours, that's all I'm saying 🤷🏽‍♀️

Maybe we'll never know but I'll eat my hat if this turns out to have been pre-planned in the two weeks between Michael Mosley dying and the friends leaving for Tenerife

I hope for your sake that you’re right. If anything bad has befallen this young man we are all going to feel awful about our armchair detectoring.

RicePuddingWithCinnamon · 25/06/2024 21:48

You can’t always judge body language correctly. My husbands dad is drying, he’s in a hospice. If you were to meet my husband you would never guess from anything he says or does that he’s upset about it. (He’s neuro diverse, which probably explains it) he would probably act the same way if I went missing on holiday.

BeefBrisket · 25/06/2024 22:10

I don't want to speculate on the circumstances. However, IMO the family not being upfront about his criminal background has led to a lot of hate and suspicion.

All the darling boy stuff rubs people the wrong way. There's a way to get across how special he is to you without denying the truth. The media didn't help when they left this out of reporting.

Anyway, we'll have wait and see what happens. Doesn't seem like any updates will be coming for a while
