Tell me the most shocking or fascinating internet rabbit hole you fell down

For me recently its been two things.

First was about one aspect of the Moors Murders I didn’t know about - how the 16 year old brother in law of Myra Hindley was wrongly implicated in the murders and although it’s doubtlessly down to him that countless other children were saved, the impact of what he saw and was accused of had a horrible domino effect of his and his wife’s entire lives. I knew about the murders but I didn’t know this was a key aspect of the case.

The other was the conspiracy theories about the Princess Of Wales and seeing just how far people are going to peddle absolutely horrific lies about her, and how much doctoring of photos is being used to ‘prove’ the lies. It was really grim.

Whats one of those rabbit holes you’ve fallen down and it’s stayed with you?

@sashh

I know false memories are a thing, I have some myself. Actually a lot of people have the same one, many of us remember seeing the first plane hit the twin towers on 9/11.

But it wasn't on television, it just that in programmes about it they always show the footage that wasn't available on the day.

Can you explain more about the above please?

In your memories of that then what do you think you were watching when it happened?

Why was the twin towers being shown live on the TV at the time?

The twin towers were only being shown live AFTER the first plane crashed.

There wasn't a live feed of the twin towers just standing there in case something happened.

If you think you watched the first plane hit then you also have a false memory.

I don't have that false memory.
I'm wondering about the people who do though.

If they think they saw the first plane crash into the towers live then in their memories why was the twin towers even being shown in the first place?

Because film crews are often around in city centres and then switch to something else that is happening. Granted they would have to be quick to catch a plane crashing into a building.

It's bizarre,

I know it wasn't shown live, I don't even think it was shown for a couple of days. But if I think about what I was doing that day it has sort of slotted in to my memory.

A few years ago I read a lot about the Penlee Lifeboat disaster (1980 or 81). A cargo ship got into trouble during a storm, a lifeboat was launched, all 16 people on both vessels were lost, including the captain's wife and stepdaughters. There's a really good documentary 'The Cruel Sea' and an excellent BBC radio drama on iplayer. The last message from the lifeboat was that they'd rescued four, two still on board. I spent too much time thinking about the four thinking they were safe, the two still on board and the two washed away in the rescue, not to mention the lifeboatmen and their families.

It was just before Xmas wasn't it.

There were children on the ship and I think their mother was pregnant.

It actually caused a change in the law. A coastguard can now order a crew to come off a ship.

I watched a documentary, apparently some of the crew's wives had radios so could listen in to the rescue.

It was only when I watched the new movie the bad orphan on YouTube that I remembered Natalya Grace. The poor little girl was an orphan from Ukraine that was adopted by an American couple. They later claimed she was an adult and got her birth certificate changed to 22. They left her for 6 months to look after herself in an apartment when they moved. Neighbours said she would call them and act weird probably because the adopted parents told neighbours she was not a child. The courts then changed her birth certificate back and she was adopted by a family that took care of her. The movie is cruel for Natalya the girl that plays her looks so much like her. Its probably makeup and a wig thankfully she grew up a confident happy girl I am just shocked the first parents were never jailed for long.

That's right, 14 and 15 year olds and their mother was pregnant. The terror must have been unbelievable. You can hear the shock in the coastguard's voice when the captain states they are on board. The mother of one of the lifeboatmen died the following day, of shock/grief it was said.

Paternoster lifts
Summerland Fire
Various racing deaths inc Roger Williamson
Darts records
Missing people

An ex of my mum's was killed at Summerland. It's very sad is almost forgotten. There's a document somewhere on the internet that discusses everything in great detail.

Why would they fake their deaths? Or why were their deaths faked?

And also why would they keep the same names?

I've just rewatched the documentary and another one.

There was a tug that offered to tow the Union Star hours before the disaster.

No one is sure why they didn't accept the offer, it's possible because his wife and step daughters were not supposed to be on the ship or that because it was the ship's maiden voyage with an expensive cargo so under the rules about salvage the tug would have a considerable claim.

Absolutely tragic.

RIP

I watched a documentary about the sinking of the Concordia cruise ship last night. Just awful. I spent ages reading about it online afterwards. The captain abandoned ship whilst 300 people were still on board, and went and checked himself into a local hotel! He claimed that he "fell" into a lifeboat by accident Hmm
There was an interesting recorded call between him and the coast guard, who was swearing at him and ordering him to get back on the ship. Incredible.

Firtreeandpinecones · 01/07/2024 18:14

I have just listened to a podcast about the sinking of the Oceania cruise ship off the coast of South Africa. The captain abandoned ship there too - it seems to be a thing.

Knew there was a reason I'm not keen on cruises or even ships in general!

Is that the Life Changing episode? I listened to it recently and went on a delve into cruise ship mishaps. I was traumatised by the Poseidon Adventure when I was about six and have had no desire for long voyages since!

Firtreeandpinecones · 01/07/2024 21:43

@Latenightreader no I listened on Real Survival Stories.

Which has put me right off boats, mountains, deserts, forests and all the other remote places where disaster can strike!
