Tell me the most shocking or fascinating internet rabbit hole you fell down

ItsNotAShopItsAStore · 18/06/2024 00:38

For me recently its been two things.

First was about one aspect of the Moors Murders I didn’t know about - how the 16 year old brother in law of Myra Hindley was wrongly implicated in the murders and although it’s doubtlessly down to him that countless other children were saved, the impact of what he saw and was accused of had a horrible domino effect of his and his wife’s entire lives. I knew about the murders but I didn’t know this was a key aspect of the case.

The other was the conspiracy theories about the Princess Of Wales and seeing just how far people are going to peddle absolutely horrific lies about her, and how much doctoring of photos is being used to ‘prove’ the lies. It was really grim.

Whats one of those rabbit holes you’ve fallen down and it’s stayed with you?

There's a YouTube channel called The why files that's a really good watch too

Another big Why Files fan here.
AJ obviously does loads of research and then isn't afraid to debunk stories.

He does a very good one about polar shifts possibly destroying previous advanced civilisations of Earth.

brendafromacrosstheroad · 18/06/2024 12:58

@Giggorata Yes!! He is great at researching and doesn't leave any stone unturned. Heckle fish brings that little light hearted side to sometimes the darker episodes.
I've been subscribed to his channel for a couple of years now, and look forward to a new episode every Thursday 🕵🏼

OMG, that elevator wikipedia page! I'm afraid of lifts, but generally of getting stuck in them. Now I have much more to be afraid of...

Puppylucky · 18/06/2024 13:27

Am I missing something about Norilsk? It's on Trip Advisor! Looks like quite a nice hotel as well

swimlyn · 18/06/2024 13:31

Try STENDEC, which concerns the 1947 BSAA Avro Lancastrian Star Dust accident.

His whole concert was a satanic ritual. Read up on it. There's so much evil in the music industry.

Someone’s written a whole paper about it.

(Although having read up on the events leading up to the crowd surge at the Astrodome concert, I think it’s much more likely that incompetence, poor planning and the arrogance of Scott himself that caused the tragedy rather than anything nefarious).

Making a list to Google later :)

The disappearance of Maura Murray. She was / is the same age as me. I don't think it'll ever be solved which is so frustrating.

WormBum · 18/06/2024 13:56

I have an obscure one that I read, deep dived, and have now forgotten the specific details to look it up again, but someone might recognise it and fill in the gaps.

In the late 1800s, in USA there was a boy whose father was a miner, so not wealthy, not educated, had health issues and would go into a trance and predict things or channel information.

One of the things he spoke about was a galactic space battle, similar to Star Wars, with futuristic weapons, communication devices and stuff, none of which was even imaginable at that time.

There’s a chance I’ve mixed this up with Edgar Cayce (also worth a deep dive), but I don’t think I have! I’ll do some googling tonight and see if I can find more.

Fake Paul McCartney.

I lost an entire night of sleep examining pictures of his earlobes.

Me too!

Recently discovered the baby Tegan Lane case quite mind boggling and sad.

Oh yes this is a doozy isn't it? Australian here and have followed it since the outset. For Keli Lane to conceal 3 pregnancies and have one baby literally disappear, as you say it's utterly mind boggling.

Keli Lane was up for parole recently & was refused. I'm still not sure if she did it but the circumstances just line up.

Me too. DH is working away from home and I'm off tomorrow. Guess that's me not getting any sleep tonight once the kids are settled. Off to get some snacks to accompany me in my quest down the rabbit holes!

Usually goggling old sayings, meanings, and where they started from.

Someone was literally doing nothing at work one day, and i came home and said to DH they were doing "Sweet Fanny Adams"

It's a bit of a shocker about its beginning.

I've heard the name and knew vaguely it was a murder but didn't realise how brutal it was until I googled. Poor girl!!

foghead · 18/06/2024 14:16

There really is. So much is out in the open now but they just don't seem to care. The abuse of children and child stars is awful.

Yes! I'm inclined to think she did it too. Also the fact that her mum saw her walking around 9 months pregnant in a swimming costume and didn't notice she was pregnant! 👀 If it was a screenplay or book you'd think the whole thing was too far fetched to be believable.

The spot where she was killed is now actually a school field.
How awful to think children will be playing on it. I used to live in Alton where it happened.

So you knew the story before or after you used the saying?

Sandyhook is the biggest rabbit hole I've been down - that and the Boston Marathon bombing.

saveforthat · 18/06/2024 14:41

The Euthanasia Coaster is something I felt compelled to look at after a similar thread on here a few years ago (it's not a little mat to put your tea cup on) It's a bit spooky and still plays on my mind from time to time.
