Tell me the most shocking or fascinating internet rabbit hole you fell down

For me recently its been two things.

First was about one aspect of the Moors Murders I didn’t know about - how the 16 year old brother in law of Myra Hindley was wrongly implicated in the murders and although it’s doubtlessly down to him that countless other children were saved, the impact of what he saw and was accused of had a horrible domino effect of his and his wife’s entire lives. I knew about the murders but I didn’t know this was a key aspect of the case.

The other was the conspiracy theories about the Princess Of Wales and seeing just how far people are going to peddle absolutely horrific lies about her, and how much doctoring of photos is being used to ‘prove’ the lies. It was really grim.

Whats one of those rabbit holes you’ve fallen down and it’s stayed with you?

David Smith was 17. Married and expecting another baby after his and Maureen's first baby, Angela Dawn died. I used to write to Ian Brady when I was studying forensic criminology at uni (I was 19 and hoping to write a book). I had a relative who worked in Ashworth at the time.
All letters I received were completely unhinged. Especially the Christmas card he sent one year. Scores of letters underlining text to emphasise his points.

Surprising that his letters were unhinged given that he was in Broadmoor.

Wikipedia lists of unsolved missing person cases, people who disappeared mysteriously (some overlap but includes people who vanished for a while then reappeared), and elevator accidents and incidents - I have lost far too much time to these over the years.

The lift one is especially disturbing.

There’s a conspiracy theory about whether thousands of years ago mankind was as advanced as what it is now but wiped itself out with a destruction event. I think it was Einstein who said he doesn’t know what weapons will be used in ww3 but he knows the weapons used in ww4 will be sticks and stones.

That ww3 will be nuclear (or worse if something else has been invented) and everyone will die and all traces of civilisation will be carbonised. So could that have happened once already and we are unaware?

CormorantStrikesBack · 18/06/2024 07:27

And also tiny rolled up 5th dimension loops and that’s where the aliens pop out from 😁

Purplecatshopaholic · 18/06/2024 07:33

I am going to stop reading this thread as there is a very real chance I skive off work today to read up on all of these!

Karlmayforpresident · 18/06/2024 07:41

The park ranger posts on Reddit are super fascinating. Got a feeling they turned out to be made up but they attracted loads of other peoples stories about strange things happening to them in isolated places in mainly the US.

I find the ancient civilisation stuff fascinating. All the theories around the pyramids found in different parts of the world and the underground cities. Mind boggling.

Ooparts (out of place artefacts) - well worth a deep dive.

Free energy suppression - many people have discovered ways to make clean energy for free, obviously having massive implications for the way we live and for cutting out pollution. There’s a long list of people who have died in odd circumstances and all their work has disappeared.

Gary McKinnon. I’m certain he’s telling the truth about what he saw.

Semi-aquatic ape theory. Very plausible, yet shut down by academia.

@VestibuleVirgin google K Ultra, you will not be disappointed.

@Nat6999 I think more will come out about Hillsborough. It was, in a sick sense, a perfect disaster.

People sometimes ask how the Scum headline could be believed, that's the wrong question, the question should be how vilified were the population of Liverpool for that to be believed?

Thatcher was trying to get her football ID scheme through.

South Yorkshire police were virtually her private army.

Scouse jokes were a thing.

I don't think there's much more to come out about the Hillsborough disaster. It suited all of the authorities to create the narrative that they did and to double down on it. The amount of suffering meted out to survivors and the bereaved as a result is beyond abhorrent. The Independent Panel review presented in 2012 uncovered anything documented that still remained. Undoubtedly there will have been more at a PM/cabinet/government level but given what came to pass in the following decades that stuff will have been long shredded and the main characters thankfully kicking ups the daisies now (yes, I'm happy to have a dance on Thatcher's grave if I'm ever to pass by it).

I had 3 family members there that day. Mercifully none in the pens involved in the disaster. I lived the decades of fall out. The extreme level gaslighting. The utter cruelty. And to this day if I hear an 'Always the victims' or 'you killed your own fans' or any other mindless bile (merely because a person supports an opposing football team) I get what can only be described a some kind of trauma/PTSD reaction. There was never justice. The wound will never heal.

(Sorry, not in the spirit of the OP perhaps.
My offering: I'm fascinated by whatever it is we don't know about the MI5/MI6 body in the bag case.)

The stuff I’ve read says it’s nothing to do with pyramids, etc. that we’ve found no trace because there was something like a nuclear war hundreds of thousands of years ago

foghead · 18/06/2024 08:01

@CormorantStrikesBack fascinating. That's definitely a rabbit hole for me! I've not come across that theory. Only as a possible reason for the building of the underground cities.

whiponthezest · 18/06/2024 08:02

Usually goggling old sayings, meanings, and where they started from.

Someone was literally doing nothing at work one day, and i came home and said to DH they were doing "Sweet Fanny Adams"

It's a bit of a shocker about its beginning.

BouleDeSuif · 18/06/2024 08:04

I got lost in a rabbit hole of Russian prisons once - especially Black Dolphin which is pretty notorious. Last night it was reading about a city called Norilsk that was closed off to everyone (even other Russians) until recently and even now doesn't have road access to the rest of Russia - you have to fly in or get a boat if you're lucky.

I'd also love to know what happened to Andrew Gosden - his case was failed by the police who never bothered to check any CCTV 😔

This made me laugh popping out Aliens 😀

birs · 18/06/2024 08:07

There was a brilliant book (very credible author) who wrote about some of the media shenanigans during Covid lockdowns, the nudge unit and some of the intense fear mongering. The book itself was very credible (wish I could remember the author's name now!!) but then when I started to Google around it, I ended up down a path of utter lunacy...chem trails, brain micro chips etc.

The issue with conspiracy theories is that usually they start with a truth or a half truth and then develop from there. That's often why people get so entrenched in this - 'the first part was true so surely the rest of it is too?'

Just had a look at Norilsk on google earth - what a weird place! Loads of the street view photos have the same 4 people in them dressed in red, yellow, blue and green.
Have bookmarked it to have a more thorough look later - happy days!

Fake Paul McCartney.

I lost an entire night of sleep examining pictures of his earlobes.

Haha you're definitely not alone on that one.

'Faul' (fake Paul) !

So sorry you have had to live with that. I agree with no justice. I might not join you in the danee (disabled) but I will happily cheer you on.

I started reading some of the witness statements when the HIP report came out. It was taken down when the last trial took place, strangely it has not been put back up.

How a retired senior police officer can say one thing in a coroners court and a totally different story in a criminal court is not something that should happen.

I read a while back in the news that 2 men arrested for possession of child sex abuse images. It is thought poor Andrew was in the footage but never heard anymore. The 2 men were nothing to do with his disappearance.

There's another thread running today about trafficking, suspect he was groomed and trafficked. The police massively cocked up....
