Tell me the most shocking or fascinating internet rabbit hole you fell down

ItsNotAShopItsAStore · 18/06/2024 00:38

For me recently its been two things.

First was about one aspect of the Moors Murders I didn’t know about - how the 16 year old brother in law of Myra Hindley was wrongly implicated in the murders and although it’s doubtlessly down to him that countless other children were saved, the impact of what he saw and was accused of had a horrible domino effect of his and his wife’s entire lives. I knew about the murders but I didn’t know this was a key aspect of the case.

The other was the conspiracy theories about the Princess Of Wales and seeing just how far people are going to peddle absolutely horrific lies about her, and how much doctoring of photos is being used to ‘prove’ the lies. It was really grim.

Whats one of those rabbit holes you’ve fallen down and it’s stayed with you?

Not a conspiracy theory but... men who believe they are Freemen On The Land. Absolutely bonkers. Some very entertaining court cases.

Immemorialelms · 19/06/2024 17:55

I just had another look at the weary pages of FAQs from local authorities, responding to the typically bonkers questions of these jokers...

"There is no requirement in the council tax legislation for the council to first ascertain or prove that the persons liable for council tax are living beings or are male or female.

Whether a person has a fictional name or otherwise is irrelevant and does not render the requirement to pay council tax unlawful or invalid."

The park ranger posts on Reddit are super fascinating. Got a feeling they turned out to be made up but they attracted loads of other peoples stories about strange things happening to them in isolated places in mainly the US.

I think they were based on a film which I saw on Netflix a while ago, a boy and his Grandpa find a short staircase in the woods when they go hunting. They become hunted by alien monsters, it’s really quite dark.

just read that story and the date on it. Looks like they'll be released in less than 2 years if they've behaved themselves!

I know!

I worked with them many years before the crime. I would never have imagined they were capable of this. Cool and a little aloof may be, but not this.

Another one - just stop oil is actually funded by oil companies and russian oligarchs to turn public opinion against environmental activists 🤣

The monoliths that appear in remote locations and then disappear so far they have been spotted in America,Romania and Wales. The story three identical strangers the three identical triplets separated at birth. They were part of an experiment each one adopted by people of different classes. I don't think they would have ever been told it two of them met when they attended the same college.

Shameless placemark to find stuff to read when insomnia strikes

The Euthanasia Coaster is something I felt compelled to look at after a similar thread on here a few years ago (it's not a little mat to put your tea cup on) It's a bit spooky and still plays on my mind from time to time.

I dreamed about it last night, after reading your post and looking it up, so clearly played on my mind too.

Sorry about that. Did you watch the YouTube video of someone going on it (obviously fake)?

@saveforthat no problem! My cat woke me up as I reached the key moment of climbing aboard, so was saved any dream trauma.

I only read the wiki on it, not tempted to look at the YouTube, glad I didn't see that link first.

I think the most surprising (and shocking) rabbit hole I fell down was when I idly googled the name of an ex colleague one day. You know, a 'where are they now?' sort of thing.

I found this.

Blimey @JoanThursday was she nuts to work with?

And she could be out by now "imprisonment and said she would serve a minimum of 22 years for murder. "🙀

@Latenightreader can you expand on the lift one please.

I searched elevators on Wikipedia and just found pages about the history and use of elevators- really boring. Am I looking for the wrong thing?

No, she was very, very normal! Kept herself to herself, never really got to know her.

The one I find most fascinating is the whole ME thing.
The idea that people are travelling between realities based on them misremembering things.

Eg nelson Mandelas death (obviously), walkers crisps packet colour change, the fruit of the loom logo and so on.

I can't get enough of it🤣 it is insane to me that people can believe slipping between universes more plausible than misremembering things.

I keep thinking it must all be a big joke that I'm not getting but no, these people are actually serious. I think.

A lot of the things they put in the videos are not ME though.

The original ME was when he was released from prison a lot of people thought, "hang on, I thought he died in prison years ago and there was a court case over a book his wife wrote".

That's not misremembering, well it is, but it is strange that so many people 'remembered' the same thing. Just thinking he had died would be one thing, but the court case about a book is odd.

I know false memories are a thing, I have some myself. Actually a lot of people have the same one, many of us remember seeing the first plane hit the twin towers on 9/11.

But it wasn't on television, it just that in programmes about it they always show the footage that wasn't available on the day.

MonsterMandibles · 20/06/2024 07:17

Most recently 'Unit 731'. Someone mentioned it on a thread and so I went to read up about it.

Biological 'experiments' by Japan during WW2. Absolutely horrific. Let me feeling really unsteady for a bit.

moggerhanger · 20/06/2024 07:53

@MonsterMandibles it's horrendous isn't it.

MrsWhattery · 20/06/2024 08:28

I find the Mandela Effect interesting and loads of the well-known examples apply to me, but not Mandela himself. I never thought he had died in prison! All the ones about crisp packets, logos, product names etc., definitely.

@RedHelenB Ian Brady was in Ashworth

Stuff they don’t want you to know is fantastic podcast & YouTube channel featuring a lot discussed on this thread. I’d definitely recommend a listen , certainly sent me off down intriguing rabbit holes, that’s for sure.

Mine is the Winterbourne care home. The trial of the "care" workers there and also locked wards.
