Tell me the most shocking or fascinating internet rabbit hole you fell down

For me recently its been two things.

First was about one aspect of the Moors Murders I didn’t know about - how the 16 year old brother in law of Myra Hindley was wrongly implicated in the murders and although it’s doubtlessly down to him that countless other children were saved, the impact of what he saw and was accused of had a horrible domino effect of his and his wife’s entire lives. I knew about the murders but I didn’t know this was a key aspect of the case.

The other was the conspiracy theories about the Princess Of Wales and seeing just how far people are going to peddle absolutely horrific lies about her, and how much doctoring of photos is being used to ‘prove’ the lies. It was really grim.

Whats one of those rabbit holes you’ve fallen down and it’s stayed with you?

  • off to Google 'Secrets of Casinos' (I KNOW I'm not the only one 😂)

I just did. And I used to work in one (croupier) so I knew already but just in case...

The amount of people that go missing in National Parks in the US, some of them gone in seconds and no trace ever found, even by the people who were with them when they went missing.

Google Missing 411 for some examples but it's creepy!

David Smith was 17. Married and expecting another baby after his and Maureen's first baby, Angela Dawn died. I used to write to Ian Brady when I was studying forensic criminology at uni (I was 19 and hoping to write a book). I had a relative who worked in Ashworth at the time.
All letters I received were completely unhinged. Especially the Christmas card he sent one year. Scores of letters underlining text to emphasise his points.

Would love to know more about this. ! Truly fascinating!

There’s a conspiracy theory about whether thousands of years ago mankind was as advanced as what it is now but wiped itself out with a destruction event. I think it was Einstein who said he doesn’t know what weapons will be used in ww3 but he knows the weapons used in ww4 will be sticks and stones.

That ww3 will be nuclear (or worse if something else has been invented) and everyone will die and all traces of civilisation will be carbonised. So could that have happened once already and we are unaware?

I used to love the show 'Ancient aliens'. They made out that that in the past mankind had to have been far more advanced than we are now due to certain things that were created.

  • off to Google 'Secrets of Casinos' (I KNOW I'm not the only one 😂)

Having joined the thousands who also Googled, I was shocked to discover this.

Casinos Win in the Long RunGambling is designed to favor the house. Of course, you can always get lucky and land a mouthwatering jackpot. But this is the exception rather than the norm. Slots are configured to pay back a percentage of money received, called the Return to Player (RTP) rate.
If you’re playing long-term, accept that the casino will likely win, and remember that this is a form of entertainment. The average player loses more than they win.

Well who'd have thought it!!

Am I missing something about Norilsk? It's on Trip Advisor! Looks like quite a nice hotel as well

I was referring to the city which was locked to everyone except its' inhabitants until very recently - even now, nobody outside of Russia is allowed entry unless with permission. No idea about a hotel, lol.

It's based on a massive mine and is an extremely odd place if you google it.

Claudia Lawrence.

I often think so many people are in the witness protection programme. Often you can't even tell your families due to the risk of them being hurt or finding out where you are.

Obviously no clue about Claudia but it makes you think.

I worked with a Russian women she used to say We wouldn't believe how weird Russia is and she mentioned places been cut off with no roads in!

It is so odd, haha. It came up in a random TikTok video - I'd never even heard of it before. All the buildings have solariums in them as the city gets so little natural light, and life expectancy is hugely reduced as they're basically sitting on some kind of toxic waste dump.

GrandTheftWalrus · 18/06/2024 20:52

I lost a night looking up all the "Faul" stuff. It was brilliant and actually really convincing but I can't find the actual site now.

Latenightreader · 18/06/2024 21:41

Penlee Lifeboat. December 1981 a cargo ship get into trouble and a lifeboat was launched. All 16 people on both vessels perished. There is an excellent documentary The Cruel Sea which uses a lot of the original audio so you hear all the decisions and conversations, and there’s also a radio play/documentary with a lot of family testimonials on BBC sounds. It is incredibly moving. I also had a book about the tragedy, including a lot about the investigation afterwards.

There was a brilliant book (very credible author) who wrote about some of the media shenanigans during Covid lockdowns, the nudge unit and some of the intense fear mongering. The book itself was very credible (wish I could remember the author's name now!!) but then when I started to Google around it, I ended up down a path of utter lunacy...chem trails, brain micro chips etc.

The issue with conspiracy theories is that usually they start with a truth or a half truth and then develop from there. That's often why people get so entrenched in this - 'the first part was true so surely the rest of it is too?'

It's 'The State of Fear' by Laura Dodsworth and I agree, it's a really interesting book.

Fake Paul McCartney.

I lost an entire night of sleep examining pictures of his earlobes.

There is a documentary about this also.

Louise303 · 18/06/2024 23:19

I often wonder is the Manchester pusher real and there is a serial killer in Manchester. I know a cyclist survived after a man pushed him in a canal and tried to push him back in when the cyclist tried to get out. There was a 16 year old boy Jordan Ratcliffe that has been missing since 2008 after being dropped at a hostel in Manchester City centre. Part of a canal was searched but there was no leads and the case does not get much media attention now.

Mademetoxic · 18/06/2024 23:27

I am usually reading and watching cctv footage about Unsolved disappearances late at night... I wonder why i don't sleep!

SwordToFlamethrower · 18/06/2024 23:55

Being a transwoman loving "they just want to pee!" libfem. Then reading about Karen White being transferred to a women's prison. Getting upset, thinking about what could happen to the female prison population, with a convicted rapist in there.

Being called a transphobe by friends.
Having a nervous breakdown due to the internal conflict I was feeling.

Someone suggesting I watch Magdalen Berns on YouTube. Going down a deep rabbit hole and coming out the other side, a proud, angry amd very active terven. This was, what... 2016?

Surely most of the time family would know. Wouldn't most (or all of them) of them have been witnesses in trials? or what other circumstances could someone be under witness protection for?
