Tell me the most shocking or fascinating internet rabbit hole you fell down

For me recently its been two things.

First was about one aspect of the Moors Murders I didn’t know about - how the 16 year old brother in law of Myra Hindley was wrongly implicated in the murders and although it’s doubtlessly down to him that countless other children were saved, the impact of what he saw and was accused of had a horrible domino effect of his and his wife’s entire lives. I knew about the murders but I didn’t know this was a key aspect of the case.

The other was the conspiracy theories about the Princess Of Wales and seeing just how far people are going to peddle absolutely horrific lies about her, and how much doctoring of photos is being used to ‘prove’ the lies. It was really grim.

Whats one of those rabbit holes you’ve fallen down and it’s stayed with you?

@sashh

I know false memories are a thing, I have some myself. Actually a lot of people have the same one, many of us remember seeing the first plane hit the twin towers on 9/11.

But it wasn't on television, it just that in programmes about it they always show the footage that wasn't available on the day.

Can you explain more about the above please?

SoManyBadgers · 20/06/2024 15:21

@CatMumSlave

People think they remember seeing the first plane hit the twin towers live on tv. But it was never shown on live tv. The second plane did hit the building on live tv though. People have a false memory of seeing the first plane hit because they've seen bystander footage on documentaries etc since.

Ah ok thanks

From other threads I've been reading, the tragic death of Eva Rausing. Warning for content. Just shocking. Her husband concealed her death for weeks and she was identified only by her pacemaker.

This was by far the best synopsis of this awful event. I don't live in Australia.

Behind closed doors

When the troubled worlds of Tetra Pak heir Hans Rausing and Eva Kemeny met, tragedy was inevitable. By Robert Wainwright.

The monoliths that appear in remote locations and then disappear so far they have been spotted in America,Romania and Wales. The story three identical strangers the three identical triplets separated at birth. They were part of an experiment each one adopted by people of different classes. I don't think they would have ever been told it two of them met when they attended the same college.

There are so many triplets and twins this happened to

I searched elevators on Wikipedia and just found pages about the history and use of elevators- really boring. Am I looking for the wrong thing?

@Lovesstaggbeetle @LuluBlakey1

Try https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_elevator_accidents - it’s really disturbing.

I’ve just noticed that someone has added one for 24 June 2024. (it’s the 21st today so I hope it is a typo rather than a premonition).

Thanks for that.

I agree they are disturbing but no more so than if you made a list of mining accidents, train accidents, plane crashes or even car or bus accidents. There are always accidents where anything mechanised is involved .

It’s the ones where people were trapped in lifts for days, or the lift suddenly moved with the doors open and killed someone that fill me with particular horror. The building site/mining accidents are absolutely horrific, but somehow in a different way.

A documentary film was being made about firemen IIRC, & they're in the street when the first plane goes over & the film makers look up & follow it & it hits the tower.

google "youtube First Plane Hit in North Tower" for the video.

Is this the only film of the first plane to be broadcast?

The Dyatlov Pass incident can be a fascinating trip down a rabbit hole.

Also, Somerton Man, Isdal Woman and Jennifer Fairgate.

I’ve not read the full thread yet so someone else might have already said but the Somerton man had been identified now!

The discovery of a body found in suitcases in a Tattingstone field, 1967, and the other contents/ possible connections they offered (but no leads made obvious). Lived very near that location - it is a tiny and deeply countryfied place, no indication of this shocking morning probably before or since, but not far from the Orwell Bridge that I'd guess should have been the destination for said suitcases. RIP.

Cattle mutilations

Hundreds, if not thousands of cases all across the world and nobody has ever been seen nor caught

Huge, powerful cattle having organs removed in the dead of night. No footprints, no tyre marks, nothing

In one case a young cow was found with it's spine removed laying in the snow. No footprints, nothing

One of the strongest things is that the body parts that scavengers go for are left untouched

In one case a silent helicopter was seen in the dead of night and the next morning, dead cattle

If you start looking in to this it will blow your mind

The conspiracy theory that the ill-fated Challenger astronauts did not in fact die in the disaster, but are alive and well. There is a law professor called Judy Resnik who actually looks and sounds like the real Resnik, which is pretty weird. I've honestly spent hours of my life reading about this...

The CT online don't believe we have been into space and that astronauts are actors. Therefore, they couldn't have died, and it was acted not real. Some of the social media is hilarious 😂.

Do you mean about the footage? The first plane?

The Naudet brothers were filming a documentary about a rookie firefighter. On 9/11 Jules Naudet was out filming a call out while his brother was back at the fire house.

By sheer luck Jules was filming when they heard the plane, he pointed his camera upwards and filmed the first plane hitting the first tower.

The film BTW is excellent, it's on Youtube.

Lots of people think they saw the first plane hit on TV, but no one did. The film (or VT or whatever) was in Jules Camera. Jules was busy filming the firefighters so the film stayed with him.

Usually goggling old sayings, meanings, and where they started from.

Someone was literally doing nothing at work one day, and i came home and said to DH they were doing "Sweet Fanny Adams"

It's a bit of a shocker about its beginning.

Ok just lost half an hour to this one - very grisly reading!

Apologies if someone's already mentioned it (I'm only on page 4 as yet) but did you see that there's a possible identification of Somerton Man? The SA police haven't verified it but are "cautiously optimistic" (or were two years ago).

I saw Mel Gibson trending on Twitter a few months ago and clicked on it, expecting to read about new movies or interviews. OH. MY. GOODNESS.

I went down a complete rabbit hole about child trafficking, Satanic celebrities, the Clintons......

CatMumSlave. Wernt some of the guys down at her local pub suspected of her murder though? I read the police didnt have enough proof to charge them .It was thought that she had an affair with one of them, and was going to tell the wife . * *
