Tell me the most shocking or fascinating internet rabbit hole you fell down

For me recently its been two things.

First was about one aspect of the Moors Murders I didn’t know about - how the 16 year old brother in law of Myra Hindley was wrongly implicated in the murders and although it’s doubtlessly down to him that countless other children were saved, the impact of what he saw and was accused of had a horrible domino effect of his and his wife’s entire lives. I knew about the murders but I didn’t know this was a key aspect of the case.

The other was the conspiracy theories about the Princess Of Wales and seeing just how far people are going to peddle absolutely horrific lies about her, and how much doctoring of photos is being used to ‘prove’ the lies. It was really grim.

Whats one of those rabbit holes you’ve fallen down and it’s stayed with you?

Just had a look at Norilsk on google earth - what a weird place! Loads of the street view photos have the same 4 people in them dressed in red, yellow, blue and green.
Have bookmarked it to have a more thorough look later - happy days!

Those are the google map people!

Ghosts of flight 401.

A tragic, completely avoidable crash followed by, well, ghosts.

The Titanic / Olympic swap is fun but just doesn't add up. The Olympic was at sea when the Titanic sank.

Conjoined Twins. Endlessly fascinating.

Start here, as an example:

Conjoined Twins Patient Stories Patient Stories | Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (chop.edu)

The move on to:
Abby & Brittany Hensel
Krista & Tatiana Hogan
Lori & George Schappell

I have pretty much every book ever written on this subject. So so interesting.

The amount of people that go missing in National Parks in the US, some of them gone in seconds and no trace ever found, even by the people who were with them when they went missing.

Google Missing 411 for some examples but it's creepy!

There is a series of books called Missing 411 written by David Paulides and I believe a couple of related documentaries on netflix.

Mr Ballen on YouTube and podcast has covered quite a few cases from the books. I agree the stories are very creepy; people just vanishing into thin air.

The staircase , completely consumed me

The subreddit /nosleep with the US Park Ranger and the staircases in the forests is a horror fiction sub where people react/comment like what they’ve just read is true.

Unit 731 (Japan WW2). And "The Waco Horror", which I came across by accident when I was googling for David Koresh after a conversation with someone about cults (I couldn't remember his name, but I remembered the incident was at Waco).

Both utterly horrifying and saddening. I wish I hadn't read about them myself.

I think the most surprising (and shocking) rabbit hole I fell down was when I idly googled the name of an ex colleague one day. You know, a 'where are they now?' sort of thing.

I found this.

just read that story and the date on it. Looks like they'll be released in less than 2 years if they've behaved themselves!

Ok so I looked up Norlisk, not that odd but so interesting. So now I'm just jumping around Google Maps looking at street views of random Arctic Circle Russian cities. Total other world, and the populations of these cities are quite significant. Its bizarre to think how many people on this planet live in places like that.

Do you not think a city that was closed off even to Russian citizens until recently and that's still closed to foreigners is odd?

@Calmomiletea Google The Vigilant citizen
You'll find a lot of stuff on there about demonic and satanic elites and celebrities

Some years back I stumbled across a missing child case in the US. A boy called Johnny Gosche went missing while on his paper round. The story is desperately sad and also fascinating. His poor mum is convinced he visited her years later but said he was in danger and couldn't reveal any more information. The whole thing was very odd and it consumed me for quite a while. He has never been found.

New world order is a good hole to go gown too

fieldsofbutterflies · 18/06/2024 10:23

@MinnieCauldwell it's so sad isn't it? His dad is still really active on social media trying to draw attention to other missing people and does interviews etc. quite regularly.

He looks so broken 😞

We know his dad and he is absolutely broken, the family just want answers and that includes answers from the police. The two men that were arrested were nothing to do with Andrew, not nice people nevertheless.

My DH did something similar about an old friend of his, whom he hadn't been in touch with for several years. The friend is currently in prison for murdering his ex partner. There's been a documentary about it as well, her body has never been found.

I met the guy several times, he seemed kind and gentle. Obviously he wasn't.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 19/06/2024 12:49

I watched the keepers on Netflix then spent days reading all the updates. I might go and check on them now!
the documentary seemed a bit far fetched- then you remember two young women died and no one has ever been found guilty.

IncompleteSenten · 19/06/2024 13:09

The one I find most fascinating is the whole ME thing.
The idea that people are travelling between realities based on them misremembering things.

Eg nelson Mandelas death (obviously), walkers crisps packet colour change, the fruit of the loom logo and so on.

I can't get enough of it🤣 it is insane to me that people can believe slipping between universes more plausible than misremembering things.

I keep thinking it must all be a big joke that I'm not getting but no, these people are actually serious. I think.

Odd to us sure. Not odd to Soviet Russia where there are loads of closed cities. Not odd for most communist countries, common in China. Some are for quite understandable reasons. Maybe less understandable to us, but more understandable in a communist state.

As I said its quite fascinating to look at Google Maps on any of those cities in that vast area. Nearly 2 million people live in those types of cities and they look so dystopian on the pictures. Not to mention how extreme the weather must be. Really interesting.

mindutopia · 19/06/2024 15:42

I got really into reading reviews of motorway services once. They are hilarious. 😂 Can you imagine the sort of person who writes a review of the motorway services?!

Well, I thought it was a given that I was coming at it from my own perspective, not the perspective of Russia or China Confused lol.

@Latenightreader can you expand on the lift one please.

For me it was the "white marches" in Belgium and why.

I have come across The Shipman Inquiry which has the notes of family, neighbours etc, death certificates and other things of the 260 odd cases which were investigated.

Shipman had been murdering patients for twenty odd years before he was caught.

Only got caught because his last victim, Kathleen Grundy was a neat, orderly lady whose daughter was a solicitor. Plus Shipman should have known that morphine doesn’t go away in bodies.
